Looking for relatives with the surname of Toliver/Tolliver

Anyone related to James Tolliver Sr. (1808 - ?) or his wife Millie Swaney (1818 - 1910), James Tolliver Jr. (1845 - 1921) or his wife Ritha Brison (1850 - 1936). Also with ancestral connection back to the Samoan Islands. According to my father (Willie Hart Toliver Sr.) and my aunt (his sister), ancestors of my Great-great-Grandfather, were brought over to America as indentured servants to some Presbyterian family (missionaries I guess), that settled in Tennessee. My aunt also told me that she was told or she heard that there might have been surname change from Taliaferro to Toliver/Tolliver. My grandfather (James Richard Toliver b. 18 Jan 1875 d. 22 Mar 1959) was born in Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee. Both my Great-grandfather and Great-great-grandfather were born in Tennessee, and lived in Sumner County. Looking at the 1870 U.S. Census, I counted 12 people surnamed Toliver/Tolliver, and they were all related and I have linked down to my father and myself, they were living in District 3, Sumner, Tennessee.

My great grandfathers last name was Tolliver. James Tolliver. He lived in Tillman County, Grandfield, Oklahoma. I believe that branch of Tollivers may have come from Kentucky before they moved down to Texas, Oklahoma, and a few other southern states. My greatgrandad was born around 1876. He was married to Fannie Frances Cornelius. James tollivers mother was either full blooded Apache Indian or Cherokee. There have been conflicting stories about the exact tribal relation. Not sure if any of this helps you. But its entirely possible that we may find a common thread. I personally just started on this family tree only a couple of days ago. Good luck finding your kin :)

I am researching this member of my family, who prob died at the Battle of Pea Ridge , AR, and is buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery. I have received some invaluable info from folks here at ancestry.com, as well as Find-A-Grave and other sites, for which I am thankful. I have a question, however, and I'd be interested in the feelings of those who work on their family trees here. I have noticed that a lot of potentially valuable info is tied up in "private" trees. E-mailing these people asking for info has netted me nothing, and yet I would venture to guess that they have no compunction when it comes to using info from other people's trees. What is the general feeling about private trees?

Thank you for the information. What documentation did you find for Sept 30 1830? I did find online an index to the Nov 30, 1830 census along with a transcription that listed an Abraham Miller of the right age range, a male 5-10 (possibly William M b 1828) 1 female 30-40 (Susannah). but no other children. There are two Abraham Millers listed in the 1830 Indiana census however. Not having seen any of these documents nor having any other supporting info, I cannot do more than presume at this point.
Are you a relative by any chance? Or just a helpful genealogist?! Any information exchange would be gratefully appreciated. My personal email is nanaalex@msn.com

Susannah Toliver, dau of Jesse Toliver and Frankie Stamper

Seeking information and descendants of Abraham Miller (b 11 Oct 1779 NC d 1 March 1856 Lawrence Co., IN) and wife Susannah Toliver (b 14 Feb 1785 Wilkes Co., NC, d 5 Feb 1867 Lawrence Co, IN.) Both Abraham and Susannah are buried in Lawrence Co., IN Freedom Cemetery. Per Toliver family website, Susannah is daughter of Jesse and Frankie Stamper Toliver of Wilkes/Ashe Co. NC.
Abraham and Susannah were married poss in NC, and moved to Madison Co., AL prob by 1810, then to Lawrence Co. IN ca 1825.
My gggrandfather Hiram (b ca 1818 AL) is supposedly the son Abraham and Susannah. Hiram's siblings: Henry b 1805, Jesse b 1811, Solomon Washington b 1815, Susannah E b 1820, Frances b 1823, and William M b 1828.
Hiram and Delila Spurlin were married in Lawrence Co., IN 14 Jan 1838. They moved to Clay Co. IL by 1840, along with Hiram's brother Jesse and assorted Tolivers. Later Hiram and family moved to nearby Wayne Co., IL by 1860.
Tolivers and Millers seem to have intermarried from NC on and moved together through several states.
Looking for Abraham's origins and parents, especially.

DNA tests have proven that the Toliver/Tolliver lines are not related to the Taliaferro lineage. Charles Taliaferro and Ann Kemp are not parents of William, Jesse, Moses, Charles and John's DNA has proven he is not a Toliver. William Toliver (son of Charles) died February 25, 1822 in MITCHELL, IN (Lawrence Co.) and is probably buried in the Toliver Cemetery south of Mitchell. James Madison Toliver born February 14, 1811 in Alabama, died October 6, 1894 in Orangesville, Orange Co., IN. If you have already received this information great - if not hope this helps.

I'm not really sure how accurate this is but I am also a descendant of Charles Taliaferro and Ann Kemp. My direct line are as follows:

1.) Charles Taliferro and Ann Kemp.
2.) Charles Toliver (born 1730) and Unknown.
3.) William Toliver (probate 2/25/1822) and Unknown.
4.) James Madison Toliver (born 2/14/1811) and Mary J. Dalton (who is also my husband's ancestor).
5.) George Washington Toliver (born 9/18/1842) and Cornelia Wilson.
6.) William Maxfield Toliver (born 9/5/1867) and Lavina Elma Stackhouse.
7.) Amy Winifred Toliver (born 9/18/1904) and Charles Henry Lutes. Amy had a child out of wedlock and did not marry Charles.
8.) Kenneth Gene Toliver (born 3/2/1925) and Shirley Ann Baxter. Gene was born with the last name Lutes but was later changed to Toliver.
9.) Melinda Ann Toliver (born 7/5/1959) and James Lee Self.
10.) Leslie Ann Self (now Dalton).

Perhaps we can share all the information we have on our families. I also have in my family tree that John Taliaferro and Sarah Smith are Charles' parents. John's parents were Robert Taliaferro and Katherine Dedman. However, I'm not sure how accurate this information is. I think it's one of those things that you almost have to have DNA testing done to see whether or not you are a direct descendant.
MARGARET S. TOLIVER GARNER

I am writing a collective biography of the 169 librarians who headed neighborhood branches of the New York Public library, 1901-1950.

One of them was Margaret S. Toliver (dates unknown) who later married Marvin P. Garner. I believe that her mother was Edna E. Lanier (1888-1979) and her father was Jesse E. Toliver ((1890-1922). She worked at NYPL until 1947 and then worked at Potsdam College in upstate NY. She and her husband may have retired to Maine at some point.

I'd appreciate any leads anyone can provide for more information about her.

Bob

Re: Parents of Moses Toliver

Did you find the parents of Jesse Tolliver b. 1762 in VA(husband of Francis "Frankie" Stamper)? Jesse is my g.g.g.g.g. grandfather and am a decendant from Jesse through his son Hiram, then Jesse, then Stephen Lee, then William Amos then Margaret.

I can't make any definate move backwards past Jesse b. 1762 in VA. Every lead I get turns out not to make any sense or is a ton of speculation. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!
Shannon

Feel free to email me if you wish msscarroll@yahoo.com.
