Tolley Unicoi county Tennessee killed 1898 William, Elkanah, Nancy

I am searching for any information on William S Tolley 1850-1898, Stephen Elkanah 1814-1898, and Elkanah's wife Nancy. I believe they were all killed in Piney Cove of Unicoi in 1898. The story is William shot a man in around 1896 and then hid on Iron Mountain for 2 years. When he finally came back the law found out and went to get him. Nancy and Elkanah got shot and killed but William was only wounded and died 9 days later in Erwin jail. I am not sure the truth to all this and was wondering if anyone would have any information about any of this. Thanks

I know this post is 12 years old but I just saw it on the internet. My great great grandfather was William Preston Tolley from Rockbridge County Virginia. He was killed in action at the battle of chancellorsville on may 3rd 1863. He was in the 27th virginia . Stonewall Jackson's brigade. I have a picture of him in uniform.

Hi Mike
Thanks for you reply. Yes the death record says he was 108 when I first found this record and saw this, I too was in question. The record also said aka Elias Elkorah Tolley on it. There was also a book that was written on area in Virgina, that mentioned him, and that he was 108 when he died. The book didn't give any more deatails of his life. I was just curious about him and wondering if any one had known anything else about him.
Thanks for your help and response.

Hi,

Whilst anything may be possible, quote, "Elias Elkorah Tolley (my 5th great grandfather) born in virgina 1746 and died in 1854." The dates make him 108 years old.

I know nothing about Virginia, but did they really have death certificates in 1854, or was it a record of a burial. Texas didn't have birth certificates in the 1880s.

Unless the 'certificate' actually had 'alias' or 'aka' on it how do you know that Elonor ELCOMY was Elias. Elonor looks like a derivation of Eleanor.

I suspect you have a generation missing.

Regards

Mike

I am also decended from Elkorah Tolley. Elizabeth Tolley b 1850 in Yancey Co. NC was my great-grandmother. She was the daughter of Joseph R Tolley and Frankey Howell. Joseph was the son of Daniel Tolley b 1793. - Daniel was either the Son or Grandson of Elkorah Tolley. I have that Betty France was the Mother of Daniel Tolley but there may have been two generations of a Tolley named Elkorah involved. It appears one died 1850 in Pike Kentucky.

Does anyone know anything about Elias Elkorah Tolley (my 5th great grandfather) born in virgina 1746 and died in 1854. I know his father and mother are Daniel Tolley and Sarah Jane Howell. Elias's death certificate says his name was Elonor Elcomy. I can't seem to find anything else about him. I was wondering why the name change and what his story is.

Assuming it's the same person he married Martha Griffin and had 5 children (one of whom is my grandmother!)

I suppose there's a chance that, if the dates don't match, they could be related as have same name and occupation?!

Would be great to find out more! The Only son that I have listed for Enos Tolley is a Herbert Harold Tolley ( 1904 - 1968 ).

If anyone reads this and has any other family info for this branch of Tolley i would love to here form you as there is a lot of us living here in Australia now and the main branch seems to be the devon Tolley's. The information i have found only goes back to James Tolley's Marriage to Sarah Riddle.

According to William Fisher Tolley's death certificate, headstone and other sources (except the book Prominent Pioneers and Men of Utah), he was born in 1823, not 1824. He and his family (and the Gadds) came to the United States on the Thornton in 1854. Their son Charles was ill so they did not take go with the ill-fated handcart company with the others. Charles died in New York. They had another son later that they also named Charles. If you look at websites for passenger lists, the Tolleys are not listed, for whatever reason, but the original passenger list (microfilm) shows them on the Thornton. They were in the Edward Stevenson wagon train that left for Utah on 26 June 1859 and arrived in Utah on the 15 or 16th of Sept. 1859. William worked in New York in the interim. He did not ever live with Sarah Bardell as man and wife but went to Utah with Sarah Gadd and stayed there until he died when he returned to Utah to live with his first wife, Sarah Warren, who cared for him until his death in 1906.

Hi ! I am looking for any information on a William Tolley DOB abt. 1825 in NY State and his wife Jane L. ? DOB 1835 abt. also born in NY State. They were married around 1865 and were found living in SanFrancisco CA. in the 1870 Census. The had several children George F. , William W., Kate D., Charles H. and maybe another daughter but not sure.
I have noticed they disappeared between 1875 -1880 and the only information I can find is the oldest boy George F. and youngest boy Charles H. Tolley were inmates in Herkimer County NY in the 1880 census. I am hoping to find out what happened to my family and to find my GG Grandmothers maiden name and hope to trace our roots back even farther. Any help would be much appriciated .

Thank You
Mike

Grandma was a Hamilton County, Illinois, Tolley, and the ascent goes like this:

Daniel Morgan Tolley (1859-1948, b.& d. Hamilton Co, IL)
Vincent Tolley (1827-1900, b. & d. IL)
Daniel Tolley (b. 1804 Bourbon County,KY; d. 1878 Hamilton Co., IL.)
Isom Tolley (b. ca 1756 VA and went to Bourbon County, KY; married there to Isabelle Wilson; moved to Sangamon Co., IL; lived to be about 100 and died in Appanoose Co., Iowa 9 Nov 1856, where he had been living with his daughter Elizabeth, wife of John Weir/Ware, since 1855. His tombstone says he lived 100 years and 28 days, but this doesn't jive with his census records, and he may have been in his 90's when he died. He is reported as age 86 in the 1850 Sangamon Co., IL census.

If someone runs across a record that ties this Isom in with Elkanah, please, please post the record's name and where it can be found.

So happy to hear that progress is being made on the Tolleys!

I think that have corresponded with Becky at that time. I am the great grandson of Samuel Boone (1848) and Elizabeth Tolley - based on the census records I believe that she is the daughter of Joseph R Tolley and Franky Howell but I do not have a firm source for this. We made a trip to Rebels Creek Cemetery about 10 years ago. I am interested in more information on Elizabeth Tolley - my records are confusing especially about her death and Sam's remarriage. I am also interested in other information pictures and etc on these families. Jim Boone

To Becky Tolley-Ray: I recently came on Ancestry.com and have just begun my searches. I am following up on the work of my father's cousin, Bob Tolley. He had traced my and his lineage directly back to Elkanah Tolley (the "original" documented Tolley in this country, it seems). Bob used to have an old Tintype/Daguerrotype-type photo, although it went by another name. Elkanah had long brown hair and a long brown beard and looked a bit like John Brown (of Harper's Ferry fame). BUT, he has "misplaced" it, since I wanted to copy it. I don't know if it is really misplaced or he is just being proprietary with it, although I don't know why! I have worked out my direct lineage, but not all the siblings, and all the descendents of each generation. However, I do know that Frankie Howell (m. 1848) was married to Joseph "Jasper" Tolley (same as Joseph R. Tolley?) who was the first of Daniel's twelve children. [Daniel was the 2nd of Elkanah's 3 children]. Joseph Tolley was my great-great-great grandfather. And yes, there was a lot of intermarrying in those hills. My grandmother Tolley married a Tolley. Just a little more interesting info: my mother's family settled in the Ozarks. They travelled over time from Tennessee, to Kentucky, to Missouri, and then to Arkansas. There are Boones in their lineage, and it goes back to Kentucky and Tennessee. The county my Arkansas grandmother lived in all her life was Boone county. And so far, I have traced that lineage back to two female Boone cousins who married into the family at the same time, and both are supposed to be related to Daniel Boone, but I haven't gotten there yet to confirm it. I may be related to Daniel Boone from both sides of my family! Perhaps you could post your photographs on Ancestry.com. I would love to see them. I plan to post some photos as soon as I get organized and have the time. And who is your great grandfather? If you want to discuss anything further, feel free to contact me. Dayna Tolley (I kept my maiden name).

Response to Jan Snover: Jan I realize that your question is rather old and perhaps you have found your answer already, but I have just recently come on to Ancestry.com and am just finding things. You asked about Isom and Elias. I have already found my direct lineage back to Elkanah (b. 1770) who appears to be the first Tolley documented for one line of the Tolleys, if not THE line of the Tolleys that branched off into a few lines. I have MY direct lineage traced back to him, but so far I don't have all the children of each generation (i.e. uncles, brothers, aunts, sisters) written down (or recorded online) yet. However, in tracing my direct line, I remember seeing both Isom and Elias. I believe they were sons of Elkanah, or sons of Daniel (one of his sons). Anyway, they are direct descendents of Elkanah. Since I have only been doing this a few months, I have seen a lot of stuff, but haven't had a chance to document everything, because I am trying to do this methodically, one ancestor at a time, going backwards. Do you believe yourself to be an ancestor of either Isom or Elias? If you would like, when I get back to them in my tree, I could notify you, or, as I understand it, on Ancestry.com, the trees will link up at some point?
Let me know what your interests are.
