Picture of Nona Tolly in IL

I have a picture of a Nona Tolly who is supposed to be my gr grandfather's first fiance. I'm not sure if they married or not. My gr grandfather's name is Jacob Matthew Hoy.

The picture was taken abt 1880, so Nona had to have been of age to marry abt then. There were several Tolly families living near my Hoy families in Shelby Co., IL, but I haven't been able to find a Nona or anyone with a name that Nona would be a nickname for.

Is there anyone that can help me find out who this Nona Tolly is? I've not been able to find any marriage records and can't place my gr grandfather in the Shelby Co 1880 census. I do have the picute of Nona along with a seperate picture of my gr grandfather taken at the same time. The pictures were done in the same studio with the same props, and Nona's picture has a dog laying at her feet.

Any help on figuring out who she might be will be greatly appreciated!
Melissa Hoy Jones

I'm looking for information on a husband and wife named Peter Tolly and Mary Healy Tolly.
C. Tolly Shelby County,IL Please Help!

There is a house built outside of Moweaqua,IL near Findlay, IL or in the Shelby County area. Also known as Flatbranch or Pickaway Township. (I think) Anyways an inscription on the house reads (C. Tolly 1884) I am curious to know more about this man. I lived in that house about 11 years ago. I know he married an Amanda E. Modlin. His parents were Jonathan Tolly and Elizabeth Betsy. I am unsure of the year he was born but I know that he married Amanda in 1874. If anyone has any information on them please email me back! I am eager to know more about this man & his family. I believe they had around 9-10 children. He is said to be buried in Little Flock Cemetary but I know of a Tolly Cemetary close to the home he may be buried in. This is the start so I am probably incorrect on alot of things. The man I believe to be *C. Tolly* is a Levi C. Tolly. Please help!!

Barbara, thanks for the heads up on James Vessells. I have a photostat version of the original will and the inventory. I also have a "translation" of both typed up. One of the things I tried to do with this was compare his will and inventory to Gerardus Wessells, his likely father. Gerardus left his son James some medical books and instruments. James will lists "old books" and on item called a lancet, a medical instrument used to drain off infections, etc. Could be that every farmer in the 18th century had one for use on family or farm animals, but I doubt that is the case. It is because this is not a strong verification of their connection that I started to look into the Tolly line.

Barb,

I had several responses similar to yours. I will make a note of the names you mention. I have no further data than what I posted in my original message. I have Thomas in Cecil Co., Md. only. Elizabeth is in Cecil and Anne Arundel. If Thomas is her father it would be unlikely that he fathered anyone in the 1730s since at the youngest he would likely be in his fifties. Most Wessels researchers believe that Elizbeth moved to Accomack Co. Va. with her husband James Vessels as early as 1713. Though this is likely and logical, I have been unable to verify such a move in the records. That is why I started working on the Tollys in hopes that they might shed some light on the Elizabeth/James/Virginia connection. I will let you know if I find anything further on the Tollys.
Brad,
would you have any information on a Chrsitian or a Christopher Tolly who was born around 1737 not sure just where?

Christopher died in Rockbridge county, Va. in 1804-1806 leaving 4 sons; Christopher,John, Samuel, and Joseph in his will. Some beleive that a Thomas Tolley and a William Tolley were also his children along with a daughter named Mary. Chrsitopher's wife in his will was Patience.

thanks,
Barb

Try checking Virginia records for this Thomas Tolly. Maybe Loundon county, Hanover, Amelia, Albemarle etc. I would like to tie him as a father to my Christopher Tolley born 1737 who knows where. He died in Rockbridge county, Va. in 1806.

Barb

Tolly of Maryland 1650-1750

I am interested in the Tolly line in Maryland between 1650 and 1750. I have a Thomas Tolly and I believe his daughter, Elizabeth on a rent roll during the second half of the 17th cnetury in Cecil Co. Also on that same rent roll list is a James Wessels. In 1707 in Anne Arundel Co. there is a marriage recorded between James Wessels and Elizabeth Tolly. Around 1713 James Wessels and wife Elizabeth show up in Accomack Co. VA. I would like to verify family ties and attempt to determine whether or not the Elizabeth recorded in these various records is the same person. Any help would be appreciated.

To: Brad Clark. I am interested in Tollys in the US during the late 1600s and early 1700s. I have records from Cecil Co. and Anne Arundel Co., Md. on a Thomas Tolly and I believe his daughter Elizabeth. She married a James Wessels in 1707. If these names connect with your data, I would like to see what you have. I am trying to expand my data on the Tolly family of that era.

Thanks

Tom Wessells
