We share the same Great Grandfather. My Grandfather was Charles Mortlock Holt Tomkins, and my mother was his youngest daughter Ella. As my grandfather died when my mother was a young girl, we never knew anything about his siblings. I have two sisters, and a cousin who is the daughter of Ada Tomkins.

Hi Kieran,

Thanks for the info on Carnegies, anything else would be most appreciated. I assume James Carnegie must have had some connection with North Esk in Scotland that was Carnegie territory. I have recently been looking at the Valentine Tomkins/ Carnegie link again. Many difficulties with finding how the Tomkins appear in Cork which is my main focus.

The children cause problems too. The ones I have found are
William James Tomkins [probably] who seems to have remained in Ireland- his descendents are still there but a number of discrepencies Birth not known Possibly married a Young

Eileen Mary Born 1860

Sarah H Born 1862

Valentine Walter Born 1864 Died 1937 remained in Ireland I think but moved to US and married Ouida Jinks Bunker

Ethel Marion [or J] Born 1869

The girls all appear in the 1891 census with parents but not the boys.

After Fanny's death in 1894 in Brentford Valentine re married to Louisa Stainton Hall [his sister in law] but he died in 1900
There may have been a Henrietta as well although I don't know where I got that from.

Have lots more info on Tomkins except going back beyond 1809 but believe the family was linked to the one in londonderry.

Regards

Yvonne

Dear Yvonne Tomkins,

I am researching the family of Carnegie of Cork and would be interested in contacting you.

Frances 'Fanny' Carnegie, the youngest daughter of the five children of James Carnegie (1790 - 26th January 1874) and Frances Wood (c.1800 - 19th November 1844), of North Esk, Glanmire, Co. Cork, was born at North Esk in 1830. On the 20th November 1856, at Glanmire Church, Rathconny, Co. Cork, she married Valentine Tomkins, a merchant from Belgrave Place in Cork. His father was William James Tomkins, who died at Mardyke House, Cork, on the 11th October 1879. Valentine and Fanny lived for some time at Douglas Hall, in Cork city.

I would be very interested to find out about their life in England and the fate of their seven children.

Best wishes,

Kieran Owens
Hi Jacko

I am descended from Henry Holland Tomkins. He is my g g grandfather.

I don't know a great deal about William but am happy to share what I have collected. There is a good deal of confusion about this man and I am still trying to separate accurate information from legend.

I believe the following is accurate:
Born 4 Feb 1799 in Yeovil, Somerset, England.
1841 Census listed William Tomkins as a Surgeon. Living at Yeovil. Age as 40 years. Born in Somerset. William was Census Collector for Yeovil for the 1841 Census. Calculated year of birth as 1801. Wife is listed as Anna.
1841 Census listed William Tomkins as a Consulting Physician. William Fancourt Tomkins also a surgeon and living with William and Hannah (slight change of name). This census lists place of birth, not just county. All children born in Yeovil, Somerset. William also listed as being born at Yeovil, Somerset. Hannah listed as being born in London.
Listed on Henry Holland Tomkins death certificate as Thomas Fancourt Tomkins.
Died 1856 in Somerset, England.

Please let me know how you are related.

Look forward to hearing back from you.

Regards

David Tomkins
davidctomkins@bigpond.com

Hi Irene! I heard about you from another genealogy researcher today. I'm so happy to hear from you. My sweetheart, Eddie Tompkins, is Buddy's son from his first marriage to Margaret Handsaker. He has two sisters, Kathy and Laura, who are also Buddy's daughters, and they all live in Oregon. I know Buddy passed away last year.
I am the genealogy buff, and have been looking into the family tree on their behalf. Kathy would really like to reconnect with cousins, and I think Eddie is especially interested in seeing photos of Buddy and his half-brothers and sisters Linda Jo, Billy Jo and Bobby Jo. So far I have seen two photos, both of your grandfather Whirley Gay Sr. My email address is valerieingmiller@yahoo.com. I am also on Facebook, and have been communicating with Joyce Tompkins-Kearns. Would love to hear more from you.

Definitely an English family, possibly descended from the Tomkins of Monington in Herefordshire who moved to Londonderry in time for the siege.
William James Tomkins eldest son was also Valentine b approx 1833 and he married Fannie Carnegie and then returned to England by which time he had 7 children. Fanny died in 1894 and he remarried in 1896 to Louisa Stainton Hall. I have a copy of his will. There are other family connections from the same family in Cork and Seattle that I know of. If you have any information on the family I would love to know it as I have been stuck for years trying to trace them back in Ireland. Limerick and Co Clare are possible.

Yvonne Tomkins

My husband's Great-grandfather was Norman Tomkins -birthdate unknown, married to Ellen Cremins. He was from Limerick. He had 6 sons one of whom was called James, but he was baptised in September 1846 too early for you.
I believe Norman had a brother,George, who could be your James's father.

I'm sorry not to be more helpful it would seem that Parish Priests, at that time, often forget to enter events in the register - too much whiskey at the ceremony no doubt.

Heather Tomkins

Valentine Tomkins (born ca. 1771)

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me. I am looking for any information about Valentine Tomkins, born ca. 1771, presumably of Cork Ireland (though the family, so my grandmother asserted, was English), and his ancestors. My grandmother, Virginia L. (Tomkins) Emmons, was the youngest child of Valentine Walter Tomkins (1865-1937), son of Valentine Tomkins (married Fanny Carnegie 11-20-1856), son of William James Tomkins (1809-1879), son of Valentine (born ca. 1771).

Thanks to distant cousins in Canada I know this much, but I'd love to know more. Any leads, sources, or suggestions are most welcome.

Thank you for your time and help.

Jim Emmons

Photographic Tompkins Album

In October of 2007, I sent the message below to these lists in hopes of finding living descendants of the folks in this little album. I have changed email providers and am updating the information. This album is still available to a family member. If you have a connection to this album you may contact me at vlaldridge@insightbb.com Please read the message below:
***************************************************************************************************************************************

While in Nashville, TN today I found an album of tintype photos. The album is 5 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches in size, with a metal clasp for closing. The spine is taped. The photos in the album are labeled with some stating relationships. I could not bear the thought of someone purchasing the album and removing all of the lovely tintypes and selling them one by one.
I am searching for a direct descendant of Alpheus Tompkins and his wife Rachel Miller. I would like to see this album returned to the family.
I am sending this same message to the message boards for the names listed below and to the Rootsweb lists for these names.
The spellings of each family name are my best interpretation of the writing in the album.

Please contact me off list concerning this album.

Regards,
Virginia L.
Hello, I was told Hilda married Mr. Newman after Frederick Tomkins passed away quite young. I will look at the links you gave me, thanks. Problem with UK Birth/Marriage, etc. is you just see the index, is there any other way to see specifics in those papers? And how do I order a copy of the license? Thanks.
