My maiden name was Tomkinson and I was born in Macclesfield Cheshire. My father did some research on ancestry which I sadly cannot find now. However he told me that the family previously owned a property in Prestbury and large country houses in the Nantwich area. I believe one of these was Reaseheath Hall making one of my ancestors Henry Tomkinson. Another was apparently James Tomkinson who started as an attorney in Chester and became a big landowner. My grandfather Joseph Tomkinson was born in Macclesfield.

Hi Chris, this certainly sounds like my George. My Dad says that there was some talk of him having gone to America, but I could never find out about that. I did find details of a patent that he had registered for some boilermaking stuff. Obviously never made his fortune by it!
I researched the Tomkinsons a lot as I am one. I went to Stafford to look at parish records and hit a brick wall as George's mother was written as 'Elizabeth Tomkinson, single woman.'
Do you know about the "Salt" connection? If not I shall pass on to you what I know!
yours
Ann

Hi Ann , I have a direct ancestor George T born about 1825 in Bilston so probably the same person. His son George, (b.1848, Bilston) went to USA in 1895 to install boiler equipment he had patented. Was there only briefly before returning to UK. Not sure if this may be to do with your family lore or not.Would love to hear more about your connection to George T (b.1824/25).

At the time of the 1851 Census, two young sisters Frances and Emma Tomkinson 6 & 4 respectively, were living with their 29 year old maternal maiden aunt, Mary Ellen Worthington, at 29 Myrtle Street, Liverpool an Annuitant. I have never been able to find where the children's parents, Samuel and Emma Tomkinson were. Though I think they may have been in India or Ceylon, seeing all these family had a connection with this area, due to the Civil Service, the East India Company or the Military.

Aunt, Mary Ellen Worthington was the sister of Emma, (young Frances and Emma's mother), and Mary Ellen Worthington and Emma Tomkinson (nee Worthington's) parents were Charles and Frances Worthington.

Samuel and Emma Tomkinson (nee Worthington's) first child was Francis Tomkinson was born 13th January 1845. Christened on 4th April 1845 at St Andrews, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Their second child was Emma Tomkinson, born 28th Sept, 1846. Christened on 29th October, 1846 at St Andrews, Liverpool, Lancashire. Young Emma would marry Edward Tolfrey CHRISTIE.

Mary Ellen Worthington and Emma Tomkinson (nee Worthington), were the daughters of Charles and Frances Worthington.

Mary Ellen Worthington was born on 1st August, 1821 and Christened on 24 Sept 1821 at the Paradise Street, Unitarian Chape-Nc, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

Emma Tomkinson (nee Worthington), was born on 6th July, 1814 and Christened on 6th October, 1814 at the Paradise Street Unitarian Chapel-Nc, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

I am very interested to find out the linage of Samuel Tomkinson, Emma Christie (nee Tomkinson's) father any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Janice - Belrose - Sydney, Australia

My grandfather was a Tomkinson who came from stoke and have recently discovered my nan was his second wife and that his first wife was also from stoke.
I tried to send you a message earlier, but just in case you didn't get it, I'll post it here. You earlier offered to send me a scan of the earlier pictures of your family? I would really appreciate that. I talked to my mother and she was very excited to have some contact with members of her family again (I think her sister Iris may have passed on- we've had no contact with her in quite some time). Anyway, I think I've got a copy of the marriage certificate of Eliza and Thomas Cadman if you'd like that. Thanks again.

Bill (wilbou@aol.com)

Hi Bill,
Thanks. Yes, your information confirms Eliza Fox as my dad's great aunt.

Henry and Phoebe Fox had at least eight children : Eliza (1870), William Henry (c.1872), Matthew (my grandfather c. 1874), Ann (1876), Sarah Jane (1878), Edith (1880), Thomas D. (c.1883), Enoch Ernest (c.1887), Hannah (c.1889) and Harry (c.1892) all born in Wrockwardine ("Rockerdine")Wood.

William Henry, Matthew, Thomas and Enoch all moved to Nottingham in 1915 to work in one of the newly opened coal mines - Gedling Colliery. They took their wives and children with them. Matt died in November 1918 leaving ten children (inc. my dad).

Billy Fox(dad's eldest brother) and Sarah J.(nee Cadman; my Auntie "Cissie") had six children and moved permanently to Manchester in the 1940's - three of their children are still living in Manchester I recently spoke to Joyce (Cissie's only daughter)

I have many photos of Cissie and Billy and their children. One may be of particular interest; it was taken in Nottingham in the early 1930's and my 96 year old mother says it includes Cissie (which it certainly does) her mother (who would be Eliza Cadman (nee Fox), and "some of Cissie's sisters".

I have scanned it so could send it if you are interested.

I am in the process of working the Henry Fox/Phoebe Davies line back. One of Cissie's grand daughters in Manchester is also working on this line plus the Cadmans (back from Thomas)

Best Wishes
Malcolm Fox, Nottingham UK.

I have Eliza Fox being born in June 1870 to Henry & Phoebe (Davies) Fox. According to my information, she had 2 brothers (William Henry, b.1871, Matthew ,b.1873) & 3 sisters (Ann, b.1876 ,Sarah Jane,b.1878 ,& Edith, b.1880 )

1901 Census Info:
Age at last Birthday: 31
Where Born: Salop St Georges

Information from Marriage Certificate:
Residence at time of Marriage: Wrockwardine Wood
Married @ Parish Church in Parish of Wombridge in County of Salop

Hope this coincides with any information you might have. If you think I'm in error, please be sure to let me know. You are right. It was a difficult connection to make. If you manage to trace your line further, I would certainly appreciate any information you could provide me.

My mother was Gertrude's daughter. She remembers most of her aunts, and I'll be sure to ask if she remembers your Uncle Billy. My Mom's name is Josephine. She had 3 sisters named Iris, Marjorie, & Doreen Tomkinson. Thank you for the correspondence. If there's any more I can do please let me know.

Bill Bourlier (Silverdale, WA, USA)
Complicated connection this ! Thomas (37) and Eliza (31)Cadman are shown on the 1901 census on Hadley Road, Wombridge. Gertrude is shown as a daughter. The next daughter is Sarah J. who was my Auntie - her large family are living in and around Manchester. Sarah J. (known as Cissie) married one of my dad's brothers, William Henry Fox, in 1921. My dad said that my Uncle Billy had married a cousin who was a Cadman, which was the case. However I am interested in establishing who Eliza's parents were as I cannot yet connect her to the large Fox family in and around what is now Telford, Shropshire.
Any help you can give on this will be appreciated
Malcolm Fox (Nottingham, UK)
I can't be much help with knowledge of preserving books, but I would like to add that I looked through one of Newton Powers Tomkinson's books at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. I was excited when I found my grandfather, H. J. Tomkinson, listed on page 119 as a piano dealer and tuner. His full name was Horace James Tomkinson. He died in 1929 before I was born, but my father spoke of him as being a piano tuner.
