Gee; Every three years eh? And I'm not even invited? LOL. My name is Alan Moore. Born in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. My mother; Elizabeth Bissell, also born in Niagara. Her mother Phyllis Garrett, born...you guessed it. Her father was John Edgeworth Garrett... still too lazy to move from Niagara. His father, who just happened to be born in Niagara-on-the-Lake was Edwin Lionel Garrett. Edwim's father was Lt.Alexander Garrett of the 49th Reg (Brock's) who married on March 29, 1813, in St. Marks Church Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) Amelia Thompson. Amelia was born May 3, 1792 in New Brunswick. Her father was Cornelius Thompson, who was born April 9, 1756 in Freehold, NJ. and married May 15, 1785 in Freehold to a Rebecca ? Born May 3, 1759. Corny's father was Thomas Thompson, who we believe was born in England. Somehow I think we are connect... either from these people; or maybe a couple called Adam & Eve... or some up-right-Apes? Alan Moore. alanmoore@live.ca

HI Peter, I am posting a quote from the book written by Elizabeth Maklin THOMPSON who is the best documented author on the THOMPSON family genealogy of Cornelius TOMSON to date. There are some things here that you might be able to flesh out your family tree information with.

Resource Title: DESCENDANTS of CORNELIUS TOMSON/THOMSON/THOMPSON of Manalapan Township, Monmouth County, NEW JERSEY, Revised 1991 by Elizabeth Makin Thompson ............ (no longer available in print)

#Cornelius, son of Thomas who was the the 7th child of the original Cornelius of 1660 circa. and quoted from Symmes according to E. M. THOMPSON, author.

BOOK QUOTE:

7. Thomas Thompson b11-8-1715; d. 1793 intestate. owned Stone House during Rev. (?) . Lt. /Col. John Lamb's Reg't./Artillery
Sold on 12-10-1759 10 acres (purch. 17350 to bro.-in-law David Clayton.
Partiot, - against British using house night before Battle of Mon.; not destroyed as those of other patriots.
4 sons were Tories
m. 12-8-1741 to Ann(e) Taylor who was b. 1715; d. at Somerville, NJ at home of son, Lewis, with whom lived last serv. yrs.
daughter of Jos./Mary Clayton.

This couple had a son "#28 Cornelius b. 4-9-1756; d. 8-7-1814; TORY; bd. Jane Garden d. 1848; sis. of John below"

So there you have the REAL STORY. While the articles are mostly accurate, they have not all the truth printed as per the genetic links.

We had a Dial Up server "sell out" to another service and that service was just one too many dialup so we saved our dollars and signed up for Satellite Internet Service. Just got it working well mid December. It's a wonderful service and about 300 times faster in downlaod and upload times over our old dial up. Mercy, it is much better for a reader!

lthank@gotsky.com

HI There,
I finally found the articles. Thank you for the idea. It was wonderful reading! I hope your research is doing well. I read a well resourced book using New Jersey State Archival records for sourcing by a man on the story of Col. Lewis Morris and his newpew, Lewis Morris of Passage Point, New Jersey. Col. Morris had quite a history on the high seas from privateering to English colonial government employment between Barbados and the West Indies and the American Colonies and England. His brother Thomas Morris was the father of our Lewis Morris of Passage Point and I don't really think Lewis the younger was born in New Jersey but in the West Indies or on a ship. The father, Thomas, was a planter in the West Indies at same time as Lewis was on the ships. Another brother, Richard, went into business with the elder Lewis the Col. and had business set up in New York, the West Indies, and New Jersey selling sugar cane products. When our Lewis of Passage Point was about 6 or 9 his father died and left his brother, Lewis the Col., as his guardian.

Best,
Linda

HI! Just today made this link, so it's still a little messy. Anyone with information, please contact me.

William Clark TOMSON (1827-1900) married Eliza Ellen MORGAN (1833-?) in 11-1853 in Greensburg. Both were born in Greensburg too.

Children (all born in Greensburg):
1. Viola Jane TOMSON (1854 IN - ? IN) m. Elgy CRAFT.
2. Samuel Clay TOMSON (1856 IN - 1935 CA) m. Luella "Dora" BEARD.
3. Lucretia "Lucinda" Ann TOMSON (1860 IN - 1899 CA) m. Joseph Patrick SCOTT.
4. Elmer Ellsworth TOMSON (1862 IN - ?) m. Julia PARISH.
5. James Lincoln TOMSON (1864 IN - ?)
6. Ellen TOMSON (1869 IN - 1869 IN).
7. William TOMSON (1869 IN - 1869 IN).

Appears that at least Viola, Samuel, and Lucretia came to California mid 1880s. Lucretia is my great-grandmother.

Thanks, Cathy

I would enjoy correspinding with you if you can contact me at my e-mail address: lthank@turboisp.com.

Interesting it is this web site location. I would love to have the url if you have it. We had a male in this line who married into the Dutch line of VanDOREN who had some loyalty problems and was forced to fee to New Brunswick and refugee statis was held until about 1786 or 89 circa. I have wondered whether others also were involve. I have had difficulty finding the marriage of my direct link, David THOMSON to his wife in New Jesey and perhaps should be looking elsewhere. The links in Cornelius of 1660 seemed to be normal with the inabality to keep a common spelling of the name and several were changed by the time 1800 came around.

Regards,
Linda

Hi cousin! There was a paper called "The Tomsons of Perthshire" put out by the United Empire Loyalists that you can find on-line, I believe, which shows the family roots. Our branch went north to New Brunswick, then Niagara and on to Penetanguishene, Ontario. That is where we Thompsons gather every three years.
What is unclear is the line before the 1660s. I would like more information about the Perthshire roots.
I hope this gives you a start in your quest. Did many of the New Jersey line follow careers in law and medicine? That was the trend here.
-Peter Thompson
Barrie, Ontario

Thanks so much, I printed up the document and it looks like my grandmother had an older sister Sophia born 1889. It is New Jersey too thanks. My grandmother always said she was two when her mother died. This was not true, but perhaps she died shortly after this sensus and before September 1900 because my grandmother would then be 5 instead of 4. Nice clues.

My 7th great grandfather was John Tomson of Goshen, Orange Co. NY. He died about July 1778. His daughter (first name not known) married Stephen Crane of Goshen. Their daughter,Sarah Crane, married Samuel Brunson (soldier in Revolutionary War -b.about 1758) , also of Goshen (and later Wallkill, NY). John Tomson's sons-in-law were Stephen Crane of Goshen and Andrew McCord of Ulster County. This is John Tomson's Will:
"In the name of God, Amen, April 24, 1777. I, John Tomson, of Goshen, Orange County, yeoman being sick. My will is that the lot of land lying next to Stephen Meeker and my two lots of Cedar Swamp be sold (by?) my executors.
Re: William Otto & Elizabeth Ann Tomson of Ohio?

Hello Robert...

I don't have much, and I'm not sure of your time frame.

My great-great-grandfather, Dr. Wm. Otto Tomson, DDS b. 1855 in Noble Co., OH d. 1941 in Muskingum Co., OH was the son of William Thompson and Margaret Ann Arick-Sullivan-Thompson.

William Sr was born about 1828 in Ohio, but I can't find anything on who is parents were, if siblings. There are a great many Thompson's living in the same area's as my William during the earlier census years, and making it very difficult for me to put any together.

Due to the fact that William Sr., died in the Civil War at Chatanooga, TN, I cannot find anything out about his death at this time. Therefore, I can't find anything about his parents. I have both the pension and military records for him, neither gives much vital info. I know what he looked like, who he was married to, and all the children... but no siblings or parents.

Anything I can try to help with, I will try my darndest.

Sincerely,
Tricia Russell

Wendy,

How were you able to find out about the Tomson's coming from Finland?

I just found out, thru my great Uncle, that our ancestor's consisted of 5 Tomson brother's who came to the US from Finland... I even know the town, but can't find my note right now. I've posted it onto the Tomson/Thompson surname list though.

I would love to know, so that when I find out who my ggggrandfather's parents are, finally, I will be more hopeful in figuring out which brother!

Sincerely,
Tricia
