George Toplis of Brassington

Ince's Pedigrees state that George Toplis of Brassington, Derbyshire, son of Thomas and Lydia Buton Toplis, was "in America" at the time Ince listed the family (1840s-50s). Several of his siblings also went to America, including two of my ancestors, but I have not been able to locate George there anywhere in any census. Does anyone on the list know anything about this George? He was baptized in 1797, and there is a record of a George Toplis, possibly him, arriving in NYC in 1833. His three married sisters (Dorothy Toplis Repton, Elizabeth Toplis Burton, and Lydia Toplis Hunter) all went to Fulton and Montgomery Counties in New York, but I find no sign of George anywhere.
Joanne Gaudio

G'day Les
I note your Message was done in 2002. My wife, Judy (nee Wright) is decendant of Beatrice Toplis who married Stanley Wright Townsville in 1917. Stanley & Beatrice had two sons, Roy Vincent & Gordon Arthur, who is Judy's Dad, commonly known as "Artie".

We have a Public Tree for the Wrights that I established from a GEDCOM transfer from our Family Tree.

Louisa Toplis (nee Frodsham) split with her engineer husband, William, in 1909 and brought all her children except her eldest son, James William, 20, who we have reason to believe, never his mother and siblings again.

Please access the Wright Tree and keep watch as it will be work in progress. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

I also have a photo of the "SS Oswestry Grange" and the short history of the ship which was sunk during WW1 on Atlantic duty.

Do you have any Family photos available?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards
Ray (& Judy)
Gold Coast Qld

My g-g-grandfather, Thomas Toplis was born in Woodborough, however, I cannot find his family given the time he was born. I believe he had a brother William and a person named Mary in his family signed his marriage certificate. Thomas married Hannah Churchill of St. Mary's, Nottingham. Thomas was born about 1806, according to census, and William born about 1801 according to census.

I am trying to trace the origins of a rather overlooked Edwarding engineer, Claude Toplis, who worked at the English Electric Co's Siemens Works at Stafford from at least 1905 (when a patent gives his address as 44 Lichfield Road, Stafford) until about 1912 when he moved to Bath to work for the engineering firm of Stothert & Pitt. He subsequently, around 1925, moved to Bedford.
His greatest invention is a system for improving hoisting gear, especially used on dockside cranes which bear his name.
I would be grateful for any information on his origins if he originated in Derbyshire, as seems likely

Cindy, I'm sure we are related, but further back. My ggrandfather's name was Charles Samuel Churchill Toplis and showed up in New York with Fleetwood Churchill Toplis. I believe their parents' names were Hannah Churchill, b. Jan 19 1796 in Shepshed, Leicester, England and Thomas Toplis, b 1828 in Nottingham, England. Hannah had a brother Fleetwood and I believe her father's name was Fleetwood. This information is on the Church of Latter Day Saints website. I hope this helps you. If you have any Toplis' in your family, I would appreciate any information.

My father was Reginald Bertram Toplis, and he married my mother, Gladys Lyons. I have a brother, Malcolm John Toplis, and a sister, Catherine Anne (nee Toplis). I am sure I must be related to all the Toplis's in Derbyshire, but I don't know where the connection is. There are not many Toplis's that I know of.
My Toplis connection is in 1807 & the Renshaw family is erlier. When I ws checking the church records there were many entries for this family & if you know where your ancestors lived you can use the church records at the LDS Librairies. Film is $3.25 for a month or so. I have not done later Renshaw searches but I am certain you would be successful. There are many probates in Derby for Renshaw. I just never have enough time when I am in SLC to get everythiang done. Hope this helps,
Donald

TOPLIS

Toplis line ends in 1807. I have earlier info. Longson & Renshaw families also in this line. My 3rd gtgndmother was a widow when she had a dau. by Robert Toplis. He was md & I assume my ancestress was a widow with 3 children to raise, poor & lonely & you know the rest. Fortunately, the Presbyterian cleric recorded all the info so we know the name of the father. The CoE priest would merely have labeled the child a bastard. My dads family never mentioned this & if they knew never spoke of it. A 1918 newspaper article in the local paper calls her Tupman.
I have earlier information. Much of the English information is from chruch registers which in some cases go back to the 1550's. They are very accessible & easy to use & in my case pretty early. These persons lived in Derbyshire.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance?
Donald
