Greetings -- The Tormey Family and the McQuaid Family were neighbors in Haverstraw, Rockland, NY in the 1860 census. John Tormey and his brother Philip (both born in Moynalty, County Meath, Ireland) relocated from NY to Chicago after the Chicago Fire. John Tormey and Elizabeth McQuaid married in Chicago at Holy Family Church on 8 Feb 1872 and settled on the south side to raise their sons (James Francis, John Henry, Joseph Edward, Francis Joseph, Philip Joseph, and Thomas Robert). Elizabeth died on 22 Feb 1891, and John remarried Ann Marie Gaul Clinton (my great grandmother). I'd be happy to send you print outs of what Boosterjag and I have researched on these two families.

go to my posting in Feb 2004, mentions Stella there. Or just do a search under Tormey message board for McQuaid, and some of Elizabeth's stuff will come up including the Feb 2004 posting I did. Hey welcome to the family

I wonder if this is my family - an earlier post of an obit for my great-grandmother, Stella Slubowski Tormey (wife of John), mentioned Elizabeth McQuaid and John Tormey as Stella's grandparents-in-law. The 1920 census I have for Stella's husband and parents said her husband John's grandmother had been born in Illinois, though, not New York. I wonder if that was given inaccurately by someone other than Elizabeth?

(With all these Johns after one another, I'm going to have to give them special nicknames soon to keep them straight!)

Thanks for the leads/info. I believe the Donald you mentioned is a brother to Paul, but haven't confirmed this, but all the data, so far, indicates that this is true. I tracked down one name, but no response to my communication. Just have to keep trying for the next one. Again thanks for the info and leads to try to find others conneted to this family line.
Try www.raogk.org may be volunteer works in San Fran county area, if death of Paul is correct may be able to get obit, that may give you names of children and married names of girls, you would have those names to search. Also try a San Fran site under rootsweb/message boards for lookups if raogk can't help, lots of nice people do these things.

James A. had a sister, Elle who lived in the Kansas area. She married a David Hart. I haven't had any success on Elle's children either. All I have gathered is that everything points to California.

Hi Shelly
Thanks for your reply. Do you have any names and locations of living descendents of Paul or Mildred Tormey? One of the pictures I have is a wedding group with the Tormey parents and I think maybe the groom is Paul. According to the census and you email, Paul was married at age 19 so that would have been abt. 1927 exactly when my father was visiting them. I have found a mention in my dad's journal that the Tormeys were friends of my father's aunt who was born in Iowa and lived in NE. The 1920 census shows that James A. Tormey's weife, Etta was born in Iowa so that may be the connection and why my father visited the Tormeys. I also read in his journal that he did some work for the Tormeys to earn some money. Anyway, I just want to learn more about my father's life when he was out west.
Thanks for your help.

Also: Paul Tormey born 11-3-1908 died in Sn Francisco 10-6-1972 SS # 531-05-5893 in California death index.

Check SS Death index may find wife San Fran also.

Voters Registration general date to 1968 there is a Miss Virginia Tormey, most likely daugh of Paul and Virginia, plus dad was in San Fran area then, she lived at 3485 Jackson,in San Fran, a student, and registered republican. So try some other states ex. Calif. just in case all the kids from Paul and Virginia settled there.

Hi, The Paul that I am connected to was born about 1909. He did have a sister by the name of Mildred. He also had an older brother, Bernard, (the eldest of six, Paul was the youngest) who was in the military. He was born about 1897. Paul and his siblings were first cousins to my grandmother. I have a little info that I rec'd from Gertrude's estate, still trying to decipher some of the info. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Shelley Green

Hello, I am distantly related to some Tormey's that lived in Spokane in the early 1900's. I am also looking for relatives that are from that line. My great grandfather's younger brother, James A. Tormey and wife Etta lived there with their six children...Bernard, Gertrude, Margie, Maggie(I think), Donald and Paul. James was the superintendent of schools around 1905 to 1910. I believe Paul stayed in the area for awhile, but not sure past 1930. One of their children was Alberta Catherine Scanlan, who married Louis Bernard Uppena. Bridget was born on a farm near Fennimore, WI.
