Does anyone have any information on the connetion of the surname Toulouse and forms of Tountis, Tontas, Tountis, etc.? In researching my family ancestory, it comes up with Tountis in various forms but shows that this line began with an unknown ancestor named Toulouse or Tulloss. Thanks.

The Toulouses of Paincourt are Metis (aboriginal heritage) through Fanny Toulouse's maternal line. If you want the exact line, email me sosweet896@hotmail.com and I will forward it to you. Put fanny Toulouse in the subject line.

I just started my family tree search from the limited information that I have of my family. My mother, Valeda Reiter, was daughter of Margaret Vannatta and granddaughter of Theresa Toulouse. I guess that makes Jefferson my ggggf as well. I have searched for days looking for ancestors. I was always told that a grandmother along the way was an Indian but the line I have found only goes back to France. Do you have any information? I am thinking the same as you that the Indian was Jefferson's mother. My sister was the one who had the most information but she has recently died....wish I had done this sooner. She told me that the Indian was a Mohawk. I sure would love to find out. I have an old photo that I cannot identify.

You're welcome. If I find out anything, I will let you know. I only live a couple miles from Harrison Township in Wisconsin where Jefferson lived and where he died at his son-in-laws Barney VanNatta. As a matter of fact, I think that land is still in the VanNatta family. There is a small rural church cemetery there where a couple of his daughters are buried. I lived in Cassville, WI for awhile right across the Miss. River from where Jefferson owned property near the mouth of the Turkey River. Happy Hunting.

I've got a copy of his obit in my files somewhere, but it has been awhile since I have looked at any of this material. We have never been able to get to Jefferson's parents either.

I have a copy of his obituary from Grant County Wisconsin which is the county I still live in. His daughter Eliza was married to my gr., gr. grandfather Henry VanNatta. it is possible that his father died when he was young. The following is from the obituary: "He was born in Detroit MI., Sept. 15th, 1805; when two years of age he was taken to Montreal Lower Canada, where he learned the Patois of the Country" If you go online by typing in (Family Tree Maker Descendants of Unknown Ramah-dit-Toulouse) you should be able to access the obituary. I hope this helps. Regarding the Sac heritage, I was told when about this when I was young and I found reference to it once on a search. I hope this has been of some help.

Thanks for your reply! He was also my GGGG - do you have any evidence that his father actually went to Montreal? We have it that his parents were killed while he, and his brother Joseph, were very young - and that they were raised by sisters to his mother or father. And if you have any evidence of Canadian Sac Indian, I'd love to have that as well.

Jefferson Toulouse b. detroit MI in 1805 was my Gr., Gr. Gr. Grandfather the info I have is that his father Ramah.dit.Toulouse was actually a Raymond who fled Toulouse, France 1790-1793 to escape the Reign Of terror. Arived in Mi. Terr. then went to Montreal Canada around 1807. I once found a site which said that Jefferson's Mother was an unknown Canadian Sac Indian. I have not been able to trace any farther back and have had no luck tracing any records in Canada.

Suzie,

Your great-grandfather John Toulouse was born in about 1856 in Quebec Province, Canada. He married Jessie M. Carl in about 1886. They later divorced and she married a Schultz and later Oscar Shoemaker. My dad and Aunt Dorothy would refer to her as Grandma Shoemaker. John died in about 1925 and Aunt Dorothy thought it was from TB and there is a family story on his death. Jessie was born in about 1869 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota and died August 28, 1948 in Tacoma. --Kari

John Toulouse

We have a John Toulouse born about 1856 in Quebec, Canada. He married Jessie M. Carl about 1886. We can find him in the 1920 U.S. Census in Gleed, Yakima County, Washington in the home of Edward Farley. He is listed as a widow but is actually divorced. He died in 1925 probably in Washington. Children are Edward Louis born 1886 in Minnesota; Aime T. born 1892 in Minnesota; Earl Joseph born 1895 in Minnesota; Dewey born 1900 in Minnesota and Leo D. born 1900 in Minnesota.

We'd like to find out who his parents were. Thank you for any help.

John Zok was my grand father. When I finally met him in 1967, he was already a widower. Sorry I can't help you any further. My father, Joseph E. Zok is also deceased, as is my mother Rita Margaret Jorges Zok. My older brother Jim has traced our family tree for a ways back. He might be able to help you. Send me an e-mail and I will forward it to my brother.

Hello Rita,

I tried to email you direct but the email address is incomplete so forgive my digression in advance! Thanks. I read through the various threads listed here and came across a reference you made about the infamous Toulouse clan in France. We have stories in our family of a Robin Hood type figure who fled France for Canada way back when and family rumour says there are 'armoirie' (I'll find the word in English later), a sword and armour plates (armoirie = coat of arms) to prove it. I'll be darned if I can trace where these objects are now but it is all very romantic and exciting and I'd love to know more. Can you fill me in or set me on the right track? Home email is jatoulouse@sympatico.ca .
In my initial findings the first Toulouses to come to Canada circa 1760 were indeed from France and were Cressac, then Cressac de Toulouse, then simply Toulouse even before they left France. One was a bishop who technically didn't leave any direct heirs, the second reference indicates a foot soldier who died in New France within months of his arrival, and then there are the Cressac-Toulouse group from 1760. I'd love to explore more but keep saving this project for when I have more time - if I ever do! Thanks for reading.

Jo-Ann

Hello there,

We also have a Flavia in our family but Soeur Flavia would be more appropriate. She was a missionary sister for most of her adult life and served in Africa and South America for the longest time. She passed away three years ago around the age of 85 and we are lonely for her laughter and hope but ever the richer for having known her. She was born into a family of 8 I believe in St-Georges de Beauce, Québec, Canada and was my grandfather Adrien's younger sister.

Hi
My grandfather was one of 21/22 children. His father was a carpenter. I have been told that I have Native American bloodlines. In researching, I have come across Joseph Bolduc married to Virginie Cressac TOULOUSE. When I trace her family back, Cressac and Toulouse are interchanged, can someone explain this to me? Also, my grandfather's name is Albert Bolduc b. about 1886. Joseph Bolduc had 2 children from first marriage and Virginie had 20 in her marriage to him. I was wondering if Albert may have been a middle name. Also, are there any verbal histories in the Toulouse name that have Native American heritage? any help is appreciated.

Antoinette

Floyd Likens was my great grandfather. He married Georgia Van Natta, Elizabeth's daughter. The Likens had four children twin boys and two daughters. One of the twins drowned in the Missisipi rive at 16 yrs of age. His brother Leroy is my grandfather. Leroy married Ruth Holl of Baraboo and settled in Portage. They had two daughters. The older daughter, Shirley married Clayton Solberg of Ettrick, WI. They settled in LaCrosse and had eight children of whom I am the fourth.

An earlier post allude to the Toulousse name being change from Rowan. I had always understood that the name was Raymond..

Prospere and Abbie Williams were md at St. Francis de Sales Church in Waterville, Maine , He is buried at Halde Cemetery in Waterville on the Fairfield area off College Ave. They had one son died ,a few months old and he also is buried there . Abby Williams was the daughter of Lemuel and Abby F. Williams Williams of Easton , Maine . Abby's mother died when she was born. Abby died in childbirth also , I am quite sure , She is buried with an Aunt Emma Cunningham in Litchfield , Maine. They had lived in Mass. A daughter of the Toulouses is named in Lemuel Williams will. Ethel Toulouse ,later Ferguson , I believe. She may have been adopted. I have information on the Williams family which directed me to the Toulouses.
Thank you for any assistance

How far back do you have this family before Detroit, Michigan in the late 1790s? It is possible this family was also named Raymond before Toulouse. However, there is a Jacques Toulouse there in Wayne as early as 1780. Wonder if the French revolution ahd anything to do with the change?

I have been told that the name Tooloose came from the French city Toulouse.....something about a mix up in spelling when our ancestors came to America.......could this be true and if so I am vey excited to learn more about the family tree as well as give any information needed about my part of the branch.... I do know that as far as our family goes there are only a hand full of living relatives, mostly in Indiana and some in St. Louis.
