Stephen Towns who married Fanny Smith is NOT the son of Andrew Towns and Rosetta Snow

We are finding many 'new' trees claiming Stephen Towns who was born in Clinton County, NY, and died in Tuscola County, Michigan, is the son of Andrew Towns.

Research shows that the Stephen Towns who married Fanny Smith is NOT the son of Andrew Towns and Rosetta Snow.

The Towne Family Association shows Stephen, son of Andrew, died in Canada about 100 miles from the home of a brother he was attempting to go visit. Several years ago we had a researcher in Canada try to locate the burial of that Stephen, but the old cemetery was no longer in existence. If I recall, at least some of the bodies had been moved.

At one time there were several family trees posted online with this information, but we were able to show via census records that this Stephen Towns is not the same one.

We joined the Towns Family Association and corresponded several times. Our email should be in their records. They were trying to locate the original research done many years ago, but at my last contact with them, they had not yet done so. After documentation, the other trees were removed by their owners and corrections made.

If you believe you are from the Andrew Towns and Rosetta Snow line, you may want to contact the Towne Family Association. They have been collecting records and research for many years. At the time I joined, they had an annual meeting with many Towns Towne etc descendants attending.

If you are from Stephen Towns and Fanny Smith, you can contact me.

Gloria, TrischHall@centurytel.net

Obit Flint Journal 3 Dec 1907,

Ill less than a week

Mrs. James Towns succumbs to Attack of Heart Trouble

From an attack of heart trouble which she was taken last Thursday, Mrs. Elizabeth Towns, wife of James Towns, died early last evening at her home, 615 Cornelia Street. The deceased was 58 years of age and had been a resident of this city for the past eight years. In company with Mr. towns, to whom she was married in Canada, she came to Michigan thirty years ago. For seventeen years previous to coming here, they made their home in Imlay City, except for a short time when they were in Clarkston, Oakland county.

Besides the husband, Mrs. Towns is survived by the following children: Henry Towns, (residence looks like typo), Mrs. Harry Carr of Royal Oak; Mrs. SH Ashley of Flint; Henry Towns of Ortonville, and Irving and Verne A Towns, both of this city (Flint).

The funeral will be held from the residence at 9 o'clock Thursday morning, Rev. Milo J Weaver of the MP church officiating. The body will be taken to Imlay City for interment.

Her death certificate on SeekingMichigan.org says b. 16 Jan 1854, d. 2 Dec 1907, father Thomas Smith, mother not given, seven children, five living, informant James Towns. Burial Imlay cemetery

---------------
Flint Journal 3 Jan 1920, is obit of Adelaide Towns Carr, their daughter. Burial Clarkston, b. Derring, Ont, Sep 1877, m. Charles H Carr, five sons one daughter, father James Towns of Bay County and two brothers Harry and Erwin.

-----------

If you go to SeekingMichigan.org you will find the death certificates of Carrie and Verne. Use James Towns as father's name in boxes.

I do not have any evidence that thest Towns are related to Stephen Towns in my earlier post. Thought you would like these items.

Towns family lines and records

Would it be feasible to start a Towns board only for records with sources for Towns family lines? No queries, just record sources, such as wills, burial records, marriages, etc.

We were contacted again about a Chauncey Towns. Mine was born in Canada, came to NY, then to Michigan.

My Towns lines is Stephen who was born in NY before the War of 1812. Over the years many family trees were posted giving his parents and claiming he died in Ontario about 1856 on the way to see a long lost brother.

It took quite a while to get others to realize this is a different Stephen. It appears there were several Towns lines in Clinton County, NY, about the same time.

There is a Towne Family Association, but I was not able to access previous research or records when I took a membership, due to illness and other events with the people in charge of those records.

I was finally able to convince several people that 'their' Stephen Towns was not the father of Chauncey Towns, both deceased in Tuscola County, Michigan.

So many records and grave markers are no longer available, and the people who worked so hard to locate them are also no longer available.

Many people cannot afford to subscribe to sites such as Ancestry, but the message boards are also on Rootsweb which is 'free'.

Another suggestion is for someone to maintain a database, a skill that I do not have.
Francis M Towns

Francis M Towns married a Roxie Commer in Smith County, TX about 1887. Smith County is adjacent to Ellis County, TX and Van Zandt County, TX.... Both of which Roxie had relatives living in. The last information I can find on Roxie is that she was living in Louisville, Winston County, TX with her father and mother, William and Jane Martin. She was married to a C. J. Commer in Winston County about 1870. She had a daughter, an Ider J (Ida) Commer at the time of the 1880 census

Roxie's sister, Margarate (Mary) J Martin Curtis lived in Ellis County and Van Zandt Counties prior to that time. She also had a half brother, W H Holsomback that lived in Van Zandt County around that time.

Although Roxie doesn't appear on what is left of the 1890 census, I believe she may have moved to Texas with her family members...By 1900, Francis M. Towns is re-married. Does anyone know what became of Roxie Towns or know whether I am confusing her with another Roxie Commer? I would appreciate any input - she had been a dead end for a long time.

Hi from Australia.
The link sounds a good chance.

This my husband's family- his Grandfather was JOHN ORAM TOWNS of about 12 in the Towns family in Dundee. His Great Grandfather was James Towns who married Isabella Orem/Oram.

If you send me your email, I'll invite you to view my Towns-Orem Tree. I hope this LINK comes through.
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=3138806&p...
It is a Public Tree anyway, so you should be able to view it.

Looking forward to being in touch-- we have old photos and we don't know one from t'other.

Kind Regards,
Esther Townes
etownes@bigpond.net.au

Hi, I am interested in your Oram side of your family. My mother in law is an Oram from Dundee and I would like to see where your Orams fit in her tree. There is a James Towns who married Isabella Oram in her tree and I suspect your Towns / Oram is same people.

Regards
John G Duffus

Elizabeth R Towns b. 1797 with William H. 1850

1860 Cobb Cty Ga. census page 31 - William H. Towns
(ggg grandfather)with wife Louisa(Hodge) & Family continues onto pg 32 -living with them is Elizabeth R. Towns 69yrs. old. I assume this is Williams mother(?) but haven't found concrete proof.
Everyone seems to be under the assumption that James Daniel & Charlotte are Williams parents they do have a son WH...,I think this Daniel is a bro. to my WH who was born abt 1828.
My William is in Cobb Cty. Georgia at that time.
Does anyone have any information with proven documentation on this family? I found marriage of James Daniel Towns to Elizabeth Strickland 1819 Madison Cty ga. but havent found them together anywhere. I speculate the Eliabeth Towns on 1840 Franklin Ga.census may be the right one, she lives next door to William Gober.(Louisa Hodges mother was a Gober)However I dont want to go on any speculations....
I read an old message from someone who I think was on the same track with an article in the Albay Herald abt.Richard Towns & Brother WH. dissolving a business. I will be happy to exchange any info.
Thanks

I have reseached my father's family, but it stopped somewhere in Georgia, with my great-grandfather James Daniel TOWNS. It's my understand that I have relatives in the Social Circle, Ga. My grandfather, David Henry TOWNS asked my dad to visit them, but he never did. Anyhow, I am curious if you are related to my family line, since you are from Georgia.
Rita

I beleive Joe Lee's father was Joel Cadwell and I don't have her mothers name. I beleive she died when Joe Lee was 2-4 years old and Joel remarried and had 7 more children with another wife. I think there was 4 children by the first wife.

TOONS in Lincolnshire, England 1790's

My 3g grandmother was chr. Ann TOONS 28 Feb 1791 at Deeping St. James, Lincolnshire, England. She is the daughter of Wm. TOONS and Mary.
Ann TOONS married William WHITEHEAD in 1810 in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England. They had 10 WHITEHEAD children, 3 sons and 7 daughters born between 1813 and 1832. I am a descendant of their daughter named Maria WHITEHEAD chr. 24 Feb 1815 at Bourn, Lincolnshire, England. Anyone connected to this TOONS family found in Lincolnshire, England in the 1790's? Perhaps Ann had brothers who had their surname as TOWNS in other records.

Yes, we are directly related. James Daniel had at least 8 children, to my knowledge. My line is: James Daniel -> John Gideon -> David Henry Towns -> Thomas Gideon -> to me. I have David J. as one of the siblings, born in abt. 1855. I also have David Jackson, born May 06, 1857 married to Mollie Mackey McCoy, born 1862 in Louisiana. I have not confirmed/deleted one due to the conflict in dates and not having sources on either. If you'd like to contact me to compare notes, use rtscroggs@yahoo.com
Rita Towns Scroggs
