Hi Steve
You may well be correct that the name originated as Toye, remained as Toye in some parts, changing to Toy in other areas. My father's & grandfather's names were Toy (I have seen their birth certificates). A relative who was a teacher decided she preferred Toye & the name from there on in our family then became Toye.
From research that I have done the 1st Toy/Toyes recorded in Britain seem to all be after 1066 Battle of Hastings where they may well have arrived from France.
Best Regards
Rosamund

My Toy Story

Family tradition has my Toys coming from Donegal and I have found enough documentation to provide strong circumstantial support.

This is from Ancestry but it appears that it is no longer available there:

Database: Irish Flax Growers List, 1796
Combined Matches: 6

ID County Surname Given Name
423 Antrim Toy William
12845 Donegal Toy James
12882 Donegal Toy Daniel
12906 Donegal Toy Neal
12987 Donegal Toy Francis
36270 Mayo Toy Thomas

The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-1837 have a number of Toys, including at least one William in Moville Lower (1828), Donegal. Many of the ships for Canada left from the port of Moville and emigrants either settled in Canada or stayed long enough to save up for a second journey down to the US eastern ports.

Daniel Toy of Co. Donegal arrived at the port of Philadelphia on 19 Sep 1817 on board the Schooner Mary Ann from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia. With him were his wife and two sons.
Both sons were born in Ireland before 1814 and had no more children until they had settled in the Wilmington Delaware area in 1821.

I suspect that Daniel Toy and family fell into the second group of immigrants and spent some time in NB before heading down Delaware.

I have yet to find anything on my Toys in NB but would appreciate it if you keep Daniel in mind as you continue your research.

Thanks,
Margaret
George Toy, first Toy in Kentucky (for me, anyway)

I am hitting a wall with George Toy, born 1794 in New York, died 1860-70 in Kentucky. He had two wives, Mary ? and Nancy Malvina (Viney)Newman. His two oldest sons were born in Maryland, while the oldest daughter (and thirdborn) was born in Bath County KY in 1828. Thus, he moved from Maryland to Kentucky between 1823 and 1828. Census records confirm that he was born in New York, and while he is in the 1860 KY census, George is not mentioned in the 1870 KY census and Viney is shown as head of household. I have made the assumption that he passed away in that decade.

While other genealogies done in my family jump the rift and connect us to the Toys of New Sweden, I have yet to see the proof that verifies that George Toy's father John Toy was the child of Daniel Toy and Sarah Bennett and therefore descended from Elias Toy, first immigrant from Sweden.

Is there anyone out there with an answer, either positive or negative?

I am looking at a Minerva Cooper, 1810 who was married to a James Burkey and I believe had a son Harrison who I also believe married Wesley Toy in 1837. Harrison Toy looks to have been born in 1835 which is the year Harrison Burkey was born.

Hi
I am researching the Toy family-Neil Toy dob 14th Jan 1846 married Mary Crossan children-Dominic Margaret James Ann Rose Mary & William(my grandfather) all in the area of longriggend Scotland. I have heard but not yet found that there is also an Irish conection in the family.
From the small amount of research that I have so far done information apears to suggest that the Toy name could be traced back to 1066 & that they possibly arrived from France at the time of the battle of Hastings, with some staying in South England, some to Scotland, Ireland, USA & Canada. The name having changed for some(as in my part of the family from Toy(my grandfather) to Toye.

I know there are a lot of Toy's on the Southern side of Pennsylvania and I am trying to find anyone who may be connected to Toy's from Northeastern Pennsylvania. My great great grandfather William Toy, Sr. raised his family in Scranton, PA while his brother Walter Toy raised a family out in Alleghany County.
I feel that Walter may have moved out that way because they had other family members in that area. Toy isn't a very common name but records have shown that they like to use similar first names like William, Arthur, Walter, Mary, Barbara, etc. It makes it very hard to research when you compile all your information looking for clues and end up with 20 William Toy's, 35 Mary or Barbara's and 5 census records claiming the same person was born in Maryland, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey.

I have Walter Toy's 1930 Census Record for Wilkensburg District 869 in Alleghany County.
Walter Toy age 35 - Head
Esther Toy age 35 - Wife
J Walter Toy age 10-son
Elenor Toy age 7 - daughter

If you have ANY relation or knowledge of a Toy on the Northeastern part of Pennsylvania please contact me! I've hit a brick wall and any little peice of information could help.
Thank you! :-)
I received your text and the attached photo. this is the photo I've seen, but all the copies have not been of good quality. I was unable to open this one with much quality either. I will attempt to attach John Toy's photo. It is approximatly 11 x 14 and I would need to remove it from the frame and have it properly scanned to get a good copy.

Here's the picture. I would love to have a copy of picture you have of John Ross Toy. Please send it when you get a chance. My grandfather is Robert Dale Long. He is 84 years old. His grandfather was Joseph Toy who is in this picture and he talks about the family all the time. John Ross Toy would be my grandfather's great grandfather. Joseph Toy was a twin and he died in an accident at work in 1909, he was 29 years old. He left behind a wife and five small children. Whenever I go to visit with more information my grandfather and I sit for hours and talk about this stuff. I have recorded many of these stories on a voice recorder. If you have any other info to send I would appreciate it and so would my grandfather.

The Toy line I am interested in comes down through John Toy and Christian Leonard, to Christopher Toy(1617) and Margaret Bishop, to Walter Toy (1659) and Mary Pascow, to Richard Toy (1703) and Christian Grigg, to Walter Toy (1753) and Catherine Tremain, to Walter Tremain Toy (1794) and Jane Webb, to Walter Toy (1821) and Sally Cozier, to Walter Toy and Emmaline Snow. I would like more info on John and Christian Leonard and their family and Christopher and Margaret's family. Or any information that disproves the above connections.

My great grandfather was Wilbert Toy (Joseph's brother) in that picture. Shortly before he died in 1980 he had a copy of that picture (I'm not sure but it was maybe an 11 X 14) and as he told me each person's name in the photo I wrote it down on the back in pencil. After he died my grandmother told me he had said I was to get the picture but it came up missing. I've been hoping to find a good copy of it and would exchange a copy of his father's picture (John Ross Toy)I recently received. I happened across your note while looking for additional information for the Wilbert Toy family reunion tomorrow (8-21-2010). There is more family tree information available if this should reach you 5 years after your original post

Edwin & Ellen Toy

I am researching my family name Toye, based right now in Chester, UK. I have managed to trace my family back into the 1800's under the name of Toy in Quinton, Worcestershire.

Now my family first arrived in Chester at the turn of the last century when the children of Edwin & Ellen Toy were seemingly orphaned and put into the District Certified Industrial School, Chester. I have no evidence of anything that happened, but I can safely assume something did. As Edwin & Ellen were on the 1891 census, but not the 1901.

The details I have are as follows:

Edwin Toy b 1860 in Hill, Worcestershire
Ellen Toy (unknown maiden name) b 1858 in Kidderminister, Worcestershire

They had 3 children:

Thomas Toye b 1883 Quinton, Worc.
David Toye b 1885 Quinton, Worc.
Eliza Toye b 1888 Quinton, Worc.

As you can see the name changed for the children, although on the last census of Edwin & Ellen they were actually known as Toye's.

I am also struggling to find any information on Eliza, so my mind is wondering if there was a family incident involving the parents and Eliza.

Any information that anyone can give me would be much appreciated.
I saw your post, I think it was in 2001. You probably have your info by now. Our ggg grandfather was also Peter Toy. His son Benjamin L. Toy is our line. benjamin's daughter Rosetta (also called Rosana) is our line. Do you know of any pictures of Peter's or Benjamin's family. I have a picture that says Grandpa Toy on the back and I suspect it is Benjamin but i have nothing to compare it to. I do have a picture of Rosetta with her two oldest children and another of her probably late 1920's.

Hi:

I think we can definitely help each other. James Johnston and Susannah Toye were my g-g-grandparents. Their son, James E. (married to Esther Robinson), was the brother of Maggie Pearl (married to Allen Ferrel). I have lots of info on James and Susannah (Maggie's parents), including family photos and a photo of a handmade family tree that is still around. One piece that I was missing was info on Maggie Pearl. I have her listed and married to Allen Ferrel, but that's it. I have their children as Winnie and Mabel, plus one other unnamed child.

In terms of Doug Toye, he has been working on the Johnston/Toye family tree for quite a while, and we have collaborated over the years. He is also descended from James Toye and Hester Furlow -- his g-g-grandfather James Toye(b. 1821), was the brother of Susannah (b. 1829). He married Eliza Ann Thornton in 1842. Her parents were Henry Thornton and Ann [?].

I am a bit pressed for time these days, but I would be happy to send you some info, photos, etc. I would also like to fill in some of my blanks in terms of Maggie and Allen.

If you would like to contact me personally, my e-mail address is joly@ca.inter.net. My maiden name was Johns(t)on, and James and Susannah were my Dad's g-grandparents. His grandparents were James E. Johnston and Esther Robinson, and his parents were Elzie Z. Johnston and Irma Rose McIntosh. Somewhere along the line, the "t" was dropped from the surname.

I would be please to help out in any way possible.

Kathryn Johns(t)on Joly
Living in Ontario, Canada

Hi,
found your post. I too have Susanna Toye in my family tree. I have her father recorded as James Toye,...and from looking at other members trees I have surmised that his parents were John Toye and Elizabeth. I imagine they were probably born around 1765 in Ireland. One member's tree has a note for John Toye, saying that he's related to Douglas Toye, who is a descendant of Henry and Ann Thorton (but I have not idea who they are). The member's tree is "Colette family tree". I'm pretty much stuck there.
I am also stuck on Ester (Hester) Furlow.
I'm guessing Maggie Pearl Johnston (married Allen G. Ferrel) is our common relative?
Can't find anything on Maggie's dad, James Johnston, except that he was born in canada.
This family tree thing is so addictive!
Let me know if you have any ideas!

Plus a description of how he won the Medal of Honor is more than I have ever been able to find other than the comment, "for bravery". My brother's name is Stanley Edward Toy and he is a Col. in the Army. I have passed this along to him and I know he will be thrilled.

Re: Isaac N. Toy

ISAAC NICHOLAS TOY (5) born 5/30/1771, Trenton NJ died 11/3/1834, Baltimore MD) married 3/18/1793 Frances Dallam, a cousin, daughter of John Dallam and Mary Wilson (Marriage License Bureau, B-1, p. 22, Court House, Belair, MD). She was born 3/10/1773 and died 4/18/1836. The will of Isaac N. Toy is filed in B-15, p.158 at the Register of Wills, Court House, Baltimore, Maryland, and the will of Frances his wife is filed in B-16, p. 43 in the same office. Isaac N. Toy learned the art of the silversmith from his father Joseph Toy and the Old Baltimore Directories indicate he had many and varied business interests. In 1796 we find him a Trunk and Umbrella Maker at 127 W. Isaac had a brother Philip born 1843 who married Sarah Jane Falloon in Lisburn 10th October 1864. any info on these familes would be greatly appreciated. Sarah's parents John Falloon and Catherine Lavery.

e-mail lane43@sympatico.ca

My line of Toy's also comes from the John Toy and Christian Leonard marriage in St Mawgan in Meneage Sept 19 1613.

When you go forward a few generations from John and Christian you come to Robert Toy and Ann Blackwall(Blackwell) marriage in Mawnan Oct 16 1805. This is part of a highlight of my tree ... which goes forward from here into families of Toy's into the 1900's before Lena Toy marries Edward Webb Richards in Shanghai in 1932.

I'm from Massachusetts. My grandmother's last name was Toy
and her parents were from Ireland. I have seen the name spelled both ways on legal documents.
