Steve Treat of Big Flat, Arkensas was my grandfather's grandfather. The line from Steve down goes this way to me. Steve-Jefferson Davis (Jurd) - James Calvin- Carl Pink- to me Carl Dennis. I would be interested in knowing what you have found out. I understand Steve was a preacher and his son Mason was a preacher and I am a Baptist preacher but am pastor of a Mennonite Church in Enid, Oklahoma now.

Deaths from Newspapers and other Sources CLINTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN
Abstracted and Compiled by the Genealogists of the Clinton County Historical Society, Clinton Republican 1 February 1906, Page# 3 Column# 1

HAPPENINGS IN OVID
FOR MANY YEARS
Mrs. Hiram D. Treat Who Died Saturday, had Been a Resident of Ovid.
Mrs. Hiram D. Treat, who had been in poor health for some time, but seriously ill only a few weeks, died Saturday at 10 o’clock at her home in this village.
Mrs. Treat, whose maiden name was Shulda E. Mashers, **NOTE** (Name is Hulda E. Masters) was born July 21, 1844, in Luzerne county, Pa. On December 27, 1866 she was married to Hiram D. Treat, at Scranton, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Treat removed to St. Louis, Mo., in April 1871, where they remained a few months and then came to Ovid, where they have resided for nearly forth years. Seven children were born to them, all of whom are living and who were at home during her fatal illness.
Mrs. Treat was known best in her family for she was devoted to her husband and children. There is an old Jewish saying “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.” What an influence such a mother as Mrs. Treat wields in the forming of character.
A large company of friends gathered at the home Monday afternoon, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.F. Fryer, of the Congregational church. Comforting words were spoken from John 6-68. The remains were laid to rest in Maple Grove cemetery.
The words of Whittier are fitting tribute to the life of Mrs. Treat:
“The blessings of this quiet life fell on us like the dew;
And good thoughts where her footsteps passed like fairy blossoms grew.
Sweet promptings unto kindest deeds were in her very look.
We read her face as one who reads a true and holy book.
Fold her, O Father, in thy arms and let her henceforth be
A messenger of love between our hearts and Thee.
Still let her mild rebuking stand between us and the wrong
And her dear memory serve to make our faith in goodness strong.”

We finally found the grave of Stephen J Treat southeast of Rolla, Mo, off F Highway. Had GPS or we never would have found it. It is in poor shape, you have to get out of the car and walk the fenceline. I have picture of the stone. The Benton/Treat Cemetery.

I also found out that after the death of Stephen J, Lucinda lived in a converted bank building in Lecoma, Mo. She attended the Church of God regularly, usually picked up by one of her children.

Her daughter, Rosa Elizabeth was a longtime member of the Methodist Church, per a book of Dent County history by Mr. Ken Fiebelman.

Isaac Treat/Rebecca Bulkeley of Glastonbury - cousins? a Moebius strip??

I inherited a lot of my genealogical information, and pursued research when I was younger and not so diligent with “proof.” So I can’t be certain of everything in my files, alas.

There’s one relationship in particular I’m curious about, that of Isaac Treat and his wife Rebecca Bulkeley. They are likely two of my 6th great grandparents.

Among Gershom Bulkeley & Sarah Chauncey’s seven(?) children, I’ve got:

Catharine m’d to Richard Treat
Dorothy m’d to Thomas Treat
(and their son Isaac Treat m’d 1730, in Glastonbury, to Rebecca Bulkeley)
Edward m’d to Dorothy Prescott
(and their daughter Rebecca Bulkeley m’d to Isaac Treat)

So, were Isaac Treat and Rebecca Bulkeley first cousins? Or was there yet another Treat or Bulkeley family in town providing one member of that pair?

I’m curious because I’ve got Isaac Treat and Rebecca Bulkeley’s daughter Rebecca Treat (b abt 1733 Glastonbury, CT) marrying Joseph Hollister, whose daughter Ann married William Stevens, grandfather of Charles Stevens, who emigrated from Glastonbury to Illinois to Oregon and re whom we’ve got plenty of “proof.”

Trying to get the end pieces to match up!
Hi again!! I did get this post a while ago but thanks for taking the time to reproduce it for me!
You can also e-mail me at dave_melissa_marrero@hotmail.com and we can chat this way too instead of a message board.
You have a LOT of info! I'll dig into the Fall Creek, PA area and see if I can find anything on the Words.
Did you happen to have Harriett's parents as James T Jones and Amanda Allen? They were living in Burns, NY. Amanda was his 2nd wife, Harriett's mom. He had another daughter Harriett by his first wife, Abigail, along with some other older children. I have yet been able to find either of their parents, however.
My Aunt Sharon still tells me that Grampa Word (Howard) had some Native American blood. I don't think it's on the Treat side though, do you? Both of the Jones's mentioned above have their names on Indian roll cards, but I'm not sure if it's the same person. Jones is a popular last name!
Well, I'm rambling on here so I'll close for now. Hope to hear from you soon and I'm looking forward to seeing some photos!!
Cousin Melissa :-)

Hi there! That's cool being related to him. I notice the further back in your family tree that you go, the more names are the same. I have a lot of the same last names in all sides of the family. I guess that's what happens when everyone lives in the same place!
I was born in Milford, lived a short time in Orange, CT., then lived most of my life in Exeter, N.H. I lived in Spain as a student, then Seattle, WA., then all over the state of FL., then VA., now we're in TX!
I'd LOVE some photos of whoever you can send me. My address is
Melissa Marrero
917 Abbeyglen Castle Dr.
Pflugerville, TX 78660

Thanks in advance and let's stay in touch :-)

Hi, I just realized you did get my earlier post. For some reason, I did not see your response, so I apologize for sending it again. Yes, we are related to Gov. Robert Treat. He founded Milford, CT (also Newark, NJ). I am glad you did respond. I would love to share the photos with you. I was born in Rhode Island, but grew up in Windsor, CT. My grandfather, Howard's brother, lived in New Haven and in Milford (Ocean Ave).
I would gladly copy the photos and share them with you. Just send me your address. Sorry it took so long for me to check back on the message board.
Hi, I posted this awhile ago, but now I am not sure if I actually sent it to you so I am sending it again just in case it did not reach you last time.

I have a wonderful photograph of Thomas and Harriet Word along with their four sons; Edward, Albert, George and Clarence. I believe it was taken in Waterbury in the late 1800s. I received the photo from Clarence's grandaughter in California. I also have some photos of Howard as a young child and as a young adult.
I was reading some of your other posts about Thomas. Clarence's daughter told me that Thomas had one brother and 7 sisters and that he was born in Fall Creek, PA. His family moved to VA where his parents were killed. At that time, the children were separated and sent to live with others. I also found the census record that you noted in an earlier post showing Thomas as a 12 year old living with Abram Love in IL. My guess is Abram was his brother-in-law having married one of his 7 sisters.

I was able to follow Thomas through City Directories up until 1909 when both he and his son Clarence were living in Milford, CT. There is a gap in the city directories, none for 1910 - 1913. By 1913 there is only mention of Clarence. I can not find a record of Thomas after 1909. I believe he died sometime between 1909 and 1913. I believe Harriet may have died before 1920, because in 1920, Clarence packed up his family and moved to California. I don't think he would have if Harriet was still alive.
I was hoping Thomas's death certificate might give me more information about where he was born or note the names of his parents.
I do have copies of the death certificated for their four sons, and the information about their father's birthplace varies on each. Edward's lists Thomas's birthplace as Fall Creek, IL, but I think Jennie only remmebered half the information about her fther-in-law.

Jennie lived her entire life with my grandfather Clifford. When he married, she moved in with them so many of her things (photos, papers) were with my grandfather. When my grandfather died, my grandmother moved in with us and brought those things to our house. I ended up with them. I was hoping you would e-mail me. I would like to learn more about Howard and your side of the family. I have met many cousins on the "Treat" side and they have shared photos of Jennie's brothers, her parents Joseph and Ada Treat and even her grandparents.
I do hope to hear from you.
This weekend I was in Rolla, Missouri and tried to find the grave of Stephen J and Lucinda Treat. We were on the correct road, but must have driven right by it. My uncle Charlie remembers his great grandmother Lucinda and remembers her funeral. We were pressed for time, other graves to decorate, didn't turn around. I will look again in July. Found his death certificate. He was a railroad watchman, hit and killed by a train at age 69. Uncle Charlie didn't know that, either.

Barbara, gg granddaughter of Stephen Treat

Regarding Stephen J Treat, my gg grandfather: My great grandmother, his daughter, was Rosa Elizabeth Treat. She married Walter Lee Dean and their daughter was my grandmother, Anna Mae Dean. She married Walter Earl Leonard, and my mother was Mabel Edna Leonard. She married my father, Raymond Marion Wagner, and I was born Barbara Rae Wagner, their fourth child. The Deans and Leonards were mostly from Lecoma, a small community in Dent County, Missouri.
I think I may belong to your branch of Treats. My gg grandfather was Stephen J Treat born in Searcy Ark in 1856,but he moved to Missouri and married Margaret "Lucinda" Castleman in Phelps County. On death certificate, his parents are John and Nancy Morris Treat, but have trouble after that, was his father Stephen Henry Treat? If so, I guess that would put me in Gov. Treat's line? Appreciate any help!

Wow! You have a ton of info on them! I would LOVE any photos you could send to me. I am going to start a scrapbook of ancestors and have been trying to get some pictures of as many people as I can. Would it be possible for you to send me a few copies? I can give you my address. My aunt Sharon still swears that Grampa Word (Howard) was Indian. It could have been on Harriett's side of the family maybe?
I was born in Milford, CT but live in Texas now just outside of Austin with my husband & 3 kids. My father was Ronald James Beckwith of Milford, his father was Kenneth Beckwith and then there was Hiram, Samuel, Edgecomb and then another Edgecomb. That's as far as I got on the Beckwith side. They lived mostly in Lyme. Kenneth's wife, Frieda Word (my father's mother)was the youngest daughter of Howard Word and Matilda Peterson who was born in Germany but of Danish parents (not sure why they left Denmark for Germany). Then of course I ran into the same stumbling block with the Words as you did with Thomas and not being able to find his parents. There were a lot of Words in the New Kent area of Virginia and the census said his dad was born there and his mother was born in PA. I have Harriett being born in upstate New York and her parents as James T Jones (Jones was her maiden name) and her mother was Amanda J Jones (not sure of maiden name, although she was much younger than James and was his 2nd wife).
Would love to stay in touch with you and hear more about the Treats too. I guess we are related to the Gov Robert Treat? Is that right?

I made an earlier post to you regarding my grandfather Ernest Treat. His eldest son Gilbert is my father. Ernest's second marriage was to Lucille Jones and they had a son John in 1945. Lucille passed away early 1950's, and Ernest married Helen Elsea in 1955. They were married until he passed away and they did not have any children. To my knowledge John is living in Texas.
