Johnston Need, born in India 1800,father General Samuel Need.
Married Annie Elizabeth Easton .Arrived Tasmania, ship "Edward"December 1834. Had six boys and one girl. Wife Annie died in 1849 in Tasmania after the birth of the seventh child Alfred Isaac Johnston. In 1850 their father,John Johnston is recorded as taking the older four boys and his daughter, Annie Elizabeth to England for education at Norwich Grammer School, for the boys and a Paris school for his daughter.
I have been able to trace the names of five of the six boys , "Walter","John Easton","Arthur Robert","William Walker"and "Alfred Isaac",and would appreciate any information on the name and history of the the other son.
I believe the children continued their education overseas before returning to Australia to follow various occupations in this country.Walter became a Mercantile Captain, Easton became a Surveyor , Arthur Robert became a Police Magistrate. If you have information on this family tree and can advise me of the details of the sixth son,as yet unmentioned, I would appreciate the information.

Many thanks for your informative reply to my inquiry re the marriage of Charlotte Anne Trevelyan . I have been hoping that Andrew Johnston may have been Andrew Richard or Richard Andrew as this is the only instance that I could find where a Anne Trevelyan was recorded as married to a Johnston, and only eight years prior to the birth of my grandfather, Richard Louis Trevelyan Johnston. My grandfather Richard Johnston I believe was in the "Legal" profession and his occupation shown on my grandfathers marriage Certificate was "Gentleman"I therefore assume, rightly or wrongly that he may have been financially comfortable?.Any further information will be appreciated.

And there may be no need to purchase a copy of the will as its details are given in The Times as follows:

The Times, Thursday, Jun 15, 1922; pg. 13; Issue 43058; col D
Wills and Bequests

"Mr Andrew Johnston, JP, of Forest Lodge, Woodford Green, Essex, a director of the New River Company and of the Commercial Union Insurance Company, Liberal MP for South Essex from 1868 to 1874, High Sheriff of the County in 1880, Chairman of the Quarter Sessions from 1880 to 1910, and Verderer of Epping Forest from 1878 to 1887, and for over twenty-five years Chairman of the County Council, who died on February 28, aged eighty-six, has left estate of the value of £38, 367. He gives: -
From his holdings in the Wilfrid Lawson Hotel Company Limited: 100 shares to the Woodford Jubilee Hospital, 100 shares to All Saints' Church, Woodford; 50 shares each to the Woodford Parish Church, St. Barnabas' Church, Snakes-lane, Woodford Green Congregational Chapel, Union Church, Woodford Green, Grove-road Mission, Woodford, and the Woodford Workmen's Club; £3,500 to Edward Walter Trevelyan; £550 to Evelyn Helena Irvine; and £10 for each year of service to his servants (the executors to interpret this bequest liberally)."
Tracking them through the English census (to 1891), it appears that they had a daughter Beatrice Priscilla in 1860 (who died in 1862). No other children appear in the census. By 1871 Andrew was an MP. Unfortunately they are not at home (Forest Lodge, Woodford Green, Essex) in the 1911 census - only two servants are there and I can't find them elsewhere. It's a pity as it would have confirmed how many children they had. Charlotte died in Essex in 1921 and Andrew in 1922. Andrew left a will, naming his executors as Cecil Wilson esq and Miles Johnston M.B. (who may be the son of Andrew's brother, Fowell Buxton Johnston). He was worth over £38,000. You could get a copy of the will, but it doesn't look like they had a son in Australia.

Can anybody throw further light on the marriage of Charlotte Anne Trevelyan who married Andrew Johnston on 14th September 1858,at Epsom ,Surrey ,England,I believe that she was born on 19th September at Malden,Surrey, England to her father George Trevelyan and her mother Anne.
I am endeavouring to trace my "Johnston" family connection to "Trevelyan"from my grandfathers marriage certificate .He was Richard Louis Trevelyan Johnston, and showed his father as Richard Johnston, and his mother as Anne Johnston nee Trevelyan. My grandfather claimed to have been born in Sydney Australia in September 1866,however there is no record available. There are and has been many Richard Johnstons and Anne Trevelyans, unfortunately to date I have not been able to find a definite connection. Any Suggestions?

They had three children Jean, Christine and Alan. They are both now sadly deceased and I'm trying to piece together some history/tree which other family members cannot help with.
Does anyone have a Nettie Trivilian in their lines? Mine was born in Tennessee, possibly around 1870, and even that's a guess based on when her husband was born. She married John Hilliard Parish around 1892 (when their first daughter Vadie Maggie Parish was born, in Texas).

I have the feeling Nettie was her nickname, but that's all I have, from Vadie Parish's death certificate. Haven't been able to get Vadie's birth certificate yet.

John Parish remarried in 1906 to a lady named Ella, per the 1910 Census.

Ring bells for anyone?

Florence Trevelyan of Northumberland, England and Taormina, Sicily

Hi

I'm very interested in finding out as much as possible about Florence Trevelyan, daughter of Edward Spencer Trevelyan and Catharine Anne Forster, and granddaughter of Sir John Trevelyan and Maria Wilson. She was born in St Andrew's, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1852 and was the only surviving child of her parents. Her father died in 1854 and her mother in 1877.

It has been suggested that she formed part of Queen Victoria's court and had an affair with the Prince of Wales. The affair resulted in her being sent abroad where she married Professor Salvatore Cacciola in Taormina, Sicily in 1890. She died in Taormina in 1907.

Any further information about her would be most welcome.

Ruth

I have been under the impression that the Trevillian surname is from the French Hugenots. I know there are several variations of the spelling. Ken, some of them probably did go to England to escape persecution for their religous beliefs. Bettye bettye@jps.net

Hello Lindsey
On reading your query on Trevelyans I wonder if we can be of help. We have an Ernest Trevelyan in the family, born in 1886 in Frodingham, (Lincolnshire). His parents were William and Emma (nee Babbage). He died in 1915, killed in action with 2nd Dragoon Guards, Queens Bays. In 1901 he was living in Purston Jaglin with his mother and brothers Jim and Percy. Jim also died 10 days after Ernest in the war. On Ernests war memorial his address was 28 George Street Featherstone, Yorkshire. Ernests father William lived in Windmill Cottage in Sharlston in 1881. If this is of any help please contact me.

Elaine.

There is no evidence that Trevillians etc were French Hugenots. Trevillians are Cornish. The seven variations of spelling are due to written errors in early records. A's, E's, and O,s were commonly mistaken. Also single or double L's were often omitted.
The first record of the Trevillian name was found in the eighth century at Land's End in Cornwall.
