Ernest Joseph Trujillo

I am looking for information about my grandfather Ernest Joseph Trujillo. He was born in New Mexico in 1917. Specifically I want to know about his first marriage (before my grandmother) and if there were any children from that marriage. Also he changed his last name sometime between 1945-1955. I would like to know why and why he chose the last name Durant. Thank you!

Rubidoux Changed to Rubio?

Our original last name was Rubio, so I thought. My dad's older cousin told me that our original name was Rubidoux and for some reason when my great-great-grandfather came from France, his name was written/changed to Rubio and it stayed that way. Did this happen to any other Rubio's out there??? This name had come up in other conversations through-out my childhood, so it was satisfying to hear where this name came from. I thought they were just mispronouncing it. :)

Re: Jose Natividad Trujillo

Ms. Cordova, Thank you so much for your for your reply. It's positive forward. If you search the census, Jose N Trujillo, same age, etc is married to my Tia Epifania Gallegos, so that is where I am confused if it's either two marriages for Jose Trujillo, or if it's a different one. Fidencia Sanches was treated as a cousin through my Great-Tios Loppez because of their mother Juliana. As far as it leads, it is the same Jose N. Trujillo m. to Epifania Gallegos BECAUSE Marcelino is the father of Jose N. Trujillo, but I thought that Josefa Gallegos was the mother, as that shows up in a census, so I guess Marcelino Trujillo had a second marriage too. My mom treated all the Trujillos as primos, and always mentioned "Prima Fidencia" - she called those who married true cousins primos period, so one had to discern who carried the blood. I was thinking that Josefa Gallegos would have been the link to my mother, but it appears not with Jose's mother being Carmelita. My mother comes from the Gallegos Line - Maximiliano (Father) , Martin (Grandfather), Jose Maria Gallegos and Ma. Margarita Gallegos (Great Grandparents) (and I have Jose and Margaritas parents too). I am trying to make the connections from Josefa Gallegos to our Gallegos (for the rest of the Trujillos) and from Juliana Lopez to our Lopez (Damascio Lopez b. c1798 family) Again, you have provided VALUABLE information in letting me know Jose's mother is Carmelita, and the church records being at Nuestra Senora del Refugio in Las Vegas - I've always wondered where the records prior to 1873 for Sagrado Corazon are at. I've bought the extracted records from HGRC on marriages and baptisms for Sacred Heart. I consider myself quite an avid genealogist, do it daily, sometimes to extreme. I am from Watrous, just left 25 years ago, return frequently and now live in Albuquerque. I am well connected with it's La Junta names and transition to Watrous name. You have been most helpful, and if you have more, based on the information in this reply, I would greatly apprediate!! It was a great message to receive this morning. If I can make any information clear, let me know. I may be able to, or I can go ask Dear Old Dad!! May God Bless You for your selfless sharing!!

I don't know if this is your same Jose Natividad Trujillo ... I found a record for the marriage of JOSE NATIVIDAD TRUJILLO with Fidencia Sanchez in 1896 in Watrous Marriages in the publication of the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of NM.

In this record, this Jose N. Trujillo is listed as the son of Marcelino Trujillo and Carmelita Lucero (deceased). Perhaps it is a second marriage for your Jose N. Trujillo? If your J.N. Trujillo was born in 1869 and married at about age 18 or so, he'd have married about 1887. The marriage I've copied here for you occurred in 1896.

Watruous used to be called La Junta in the Territory of New Mexico. The HGRC publication notes that the settlement of La Junta was originally called La Junta de Los Rios, later shortened to La Junta, and later changed to Watrous when the Watrous family settled there

The HGRC ;publications also notes the early marriage and baptismal records for the settlement of La Junta can be found in Nuestra Senora del ReRefugio in Las Vegas Territory of New Mexico.

Marriages for Sagrado Corazon Church, La Junta, started Aug 1873 and covered a total of 26 settlements. The LDS Microfilm 017-040 begins Sep 4, 1873 59 Oct of 1908, pages 19 to 241.

MARRIAGE: P. 82, MARRIAGES, Vol 1 for La Junta, Territoriy of NM, Sep 187350 Apr 1908, Microfilm 917140.
Nov 23 of 1896, I presented in a solemn mass the matrimony of Jose Natividad Trujillo, single, legitimate son of Marcelino Trujillo and of Carmelita Lucero (deceased) with Fidencia Sanchez, single, legitimate daughter of Juan Romulo Sanchez (deceased) and of Julianita Lopez fromTiptonville. Padrinos: Jose Mercedes Gonzales, Carmelita Sanchez, Gabino Sanchez, and Isidro Montoya.

Obituary: Rosinaldo "Ross" Trujillo

Rosinaldo "Ross" Trujillo, 92, a resident of Cuarteles, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2011, after living a fruitful and productive life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tillie; parents, Isidoro Trujillo and Francisquita Ortega de Trujillo; brothers: Antonio Maximo and Jake; sisters: Fedelina and Mercedes Trujillo, and Teresita Jaramillo of Chimayo, New Mexico; and grandson Daniel Lee Payne of Lafayette, Indiana. Ross is survived by his daughters: Carmen E. (aka Betty) Payne of Santa Cruz, and Shirley Louise, and son-in-law, Gilbert Madrid of Port St. Lucie, Florida; grandchildren: Paula Velten and husband Wade of Springfield, Illinois, Gil Madrid, Jr. and wife Laura of Atlanta, Georgia, and Ken Madrid of Plantation, Florida; great grandchildren: Danielle Mullendore, Lauren Velten, Isabella and Gil Dempsy Madrid, and Jack Ross and Jayce Madrid, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Ross was born in 1918 on the Centinela Ranch, just west of Rio Chiquito, New Mexico. In 1938, Ross married the love of his life, Tillie, daughter of Ramon and Guadalupita Quintana of Sombrillo. Ross and Tillie's marriage lasted 68 years, sadly ending with the untimely death of Tillie in January 2006. They were devoted to each other and their marriage was a testimony to the true meaning of marital vows. He was a devoted family man, much loved and admired by his family and friends. Ross never knew a stranger, and all who came to know him will remember his quick sense of humor, his generosity and compassion, humility, and his kind and gentle spirit. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. May God bless him and may he rest in peaceful slumber awaiting the resurrection at the Second Coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as foretold in the Holy Scriptures in 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4. An evening service was held at the Rivera Funeral Home in Espanola on Sunday, January 30th and The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at La Iglesia De Santa Cruz De La Canada on Monday morning with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Pall Bearers were: Ken and Gil Madrid, Jr., Aniver Roybal, Jr., Adam Martinez, Ronnie Lopez, and John M. Salazar. Honorary Pall Bearers were Joe and Geraldine Trujillo and Judy and Jose Bulnes. The family wishes to thank everyone who supported the family in their time of need.
I just saw your post dated 4 Aug 2000 and wanted to respond because my grandfather, Maria Jose Trujillo married a Vigil, Ma. Teodora Vigil. I've been looking for info on her side of the family, the Vigils but not finding much. Jose Maria was born in 1887 (NM) and died in 1938 (CO); Teodora was born in 1865 (NM) and died in 1919 (NM). Do you have any connection to them? Waiting to hear from you.
