I know 11 years have gone by since your post but I have just read your query and I have a lot of info on Truman family though knew nothing of family splitt or relationship to the late president Truman. My gtgt grandfather was Thomas Truman son of James and Mary Matterface and brother of Charles James Stephen and William. Thomas was a Tailor on the Strand, Dawlish. Born 1796 married Mary Ann Rogers 1828 died 1880.
Their children were George, John Cole, MaryAnn, Eliza, Henry Thomas and Jane. Thomas and Henry emigrated to Australia in the 1850s but then moved to New Zealand. Thomas married and lived in Wellington NZ and had 11 children, Harry moved back to Australia and married and his family live on there. I am descended from Thomas and the NZ arm.

I don't know where she was born or where her people were from. I can't seem to find anything about her. What I do know is Ethel married Ray H. Payne(my ggrandfather)1920 in Marion County Indiana. They had two children: Eugene Lavasa Payne and Betty Gene about ten years apart. At some point they divorced or separated and later she remarried James E. Krug. She died 24 Aug. 1963 in Amarillo, Texas. Can anyone help me break through this wall?
Julie

Charles Truman

I have an Annie MacFarlane born 15/06/1869 in Kirkintilloch Dumbartonshire, Scotland. Annie travelled to the U.S.A. with her mother and siblings. This is recorded on British Ships Manifest as following.
British Crown Ships Manifest Departure Liverpool England arrived Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19th May 1882. Annie married a Charles Truman/Trueman in Washington County Pennsylvannia on 15/12/1885. On their marriage application it states Charles fathers name as George and residing in England. They had 3 daughters Maggie MacFarlane Truman c1886 born possibly in Ohio. Maud Truman c 1889 also Ohio and Rebecca Jane Truman c1889.
After this I have no idea as to what happened to Charles Truman, as Annie remarried a George Lucy in Brownsville Pennsylvania on 03/02/1892. Annie, George and her 3 daughters all returned to Scotland shorly after their marriage. If anyone can tell me anything about Charles Trueman it would be greatly appreciated. You can email me directly at grobb1066@yahoo.co.uk

Oh o.k. good. I am pleased to find out she was 23 when she had Mabel rather than 13. So then that would change her estimated birth year to 1871? That will help me narrow down her place of birth and perhaps her maiden name.

My mother claimed her mothers side of the family was from portugal, and now that I know it wasn't Mabel that was born there, maybe I can determine if Sarah was from there originally or if anyone in our tree was.

Thank you for all of your research.

Are you looking at the transcript because it does say 20 but if you look at the original handwritten copy taken by the enumerator on the day it is obvious that it is 30.
There is a slight mark on it which may have confused whoever did the transcript but the first number 3 when viewed against Williams 31 is identical.
These errors often occur when original documents are transcribed.

Hi, I'm confused. When I look up this 1901 census it says that Sarah is 20, not 30 as your email suggests. Her estimated birth year 1881. It shows William as her spouse, her daughter Mabel, and the other children. Mabel was 7 in 1901 and the daughter of Sarah, who was born in 1881. Sarah was only 13 years old when she gave birth to her?

The address where your mother grew up would be post 1939 so not much in the way of records online. We can't view census less than 100 years old and even if we could, there wasn't one in 1941 because of the war. You could post a new message looking for an Electoral Roll lookup but that would only give you the names of eligible voters at the address.

Sue

Thank you very much. I have found record of my mother's birth in Oct 1939. Mabel Nottingham (nee Wood) would not be her mother because that would make Mabel 10 years old when she gave birth to John. The records that you found for John (b1925) and Tom (b 1931) I'm sure are correct because I know they were several years older then my mom. I think Mabel may have been born in Portugal or Brazil. I think my great grandmother was from there and then she may have married an englishman and given birth to Mabel outside out England and eventually Mabel came to England where she married and had John, Tom, and Rhona. My mom never spoke of her father other then he died when she was quite young and that he was abusive. When I found records of Mabel and John having been married in 1937 it made me wonder if my mom's older brothers, both under the name Bramley, were half brothers because they were born years before the marriage of John Bramley Sr. and Mabel Nottingham.

Re Mabel BRAMLEY nee NOTTINGHAM.....i can't see your mother's birth on Freebmd (it's a free site and volunteers are still working on the 20thC) but I can see what looks like her brothers John E 1925 and Thomas M1931.

BUT, the marriage of Mabel J NOTTINGJAM to John E BRAMLEY was registered at Melton M in March quarter 1937 volume 7a page 695. You say he died when your mum was young....maybe he was much older than Mabel and already married and only married her when he was free?? That's why certificates are so necessary.

I can see a birth of a Mabel NOTTINGHAM registered in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in Dec quarter 1915 mother's maiden name WOOD. In June quarter 1915 marriage registered in Chesterfield of Frederick NOTTINGHAM to Edith M WOOD.

Just some possibilities to think about but suggest you confirm each generation before you look for the next.

Sue

I searched the 1911 free index for Freda N TRUMAN residential place Basford. Then returned to the Full person search screen and deleted her christian name and added it to the box Other members of the household which brings up all TRUMANS living with Freda N. Frederick TRUMAN born 1871 and Emma Elizabeth born 1878.

Then search Freebmd and the marriage of Frederick TRUMAN to Emma Elizabeth DAY comes up, registered Basford March quarter 1899 volume 7b page 257. You can order a copy from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

PS If you get a copy of your parents marriag certificate you will have their fathers' names and occupations and witness names. You must get certificates to be sure you are on the right track, especially if you are unsure about recent ancestors. It's also very exciting to receive a certificate with lots of lovely new information.

Thank you so much! I did know that she was born in 1905 but beyond that I was stuck. I will research further with the information you have given me.

As for my maternal grand mother, Mabel Bramley, I am trying to find out for sure who her parents were as well. Her maiden name was Nottingham, and I think maybe her parents were either Stanley and Lucy Nottingham or James and Elosia Nottinham. My mother, her daughter, Rhona Hurt (Bramley) had said once that her mothers side of the family came from South America, and I see that James and Elosia did live in Brazil and had a daughter named Mabel. Although I see a record of Stanley and Lucy having had several children, I can not find a record of them having a daughter named Mabel. My maternal grand father is a mystery, he died when my mother was very young. I think his name was John. My mother had two older brothers as well, John Bramley (decesaed) and Tom Bramley of Melton Mobray. My dad claims that the family sold an apple orchard and the only thing still attaching them to it, is the name Bramley.

On my fathers side, the Hurt's, he claims his ancestors are the Hurt family of Alderwasley. I don't see how to access birth certificate information or baptism records. I have only seen travel documents. I do have a membership but if not able to figure it out I may cancel and spend the money on hiring a professional. I'm not sure how to go about that either.

I have been watching NBC's 'Who Do You Think You Are' and it has influenced my desire to find out how far into my ancestry I can go. My dad is still alive and I would like to do it for him as well. I wish I was a celebrity, then I could do it for free...haha.

It requires a subscription to access the actual transcript but if you utilise the free trial offer you may find all your questions answered. Do lket me know. (I have had my free trial recently so am unable to do it for you). Ps. I also have a Mabel in my tree. She was married to my uncle Fred in Nottingham.

Hi there, I think Freda was born Freda Nellie Truman in Basford, Derbyshire, England. The birth was registered in Oct 1905.(Basford 7b 187) should you wish to investigate further for the names of the parents. She does not appear in the 1911 census however so perhaps she emigrated? Do let me know if this helps in any way as my mother's family are Trumans from that part of the world. Kindest regards,

We have developed a pretty stable theory and are now in the process of proving or disproving it.

Thank You for your time.
Chris

I am looking for the origin of the Trumans in Shotwick. George Truman (sometimes spelt Trueman) was born about 1750 but I can't find where! It wasn't Shotwick, He also probably had a brother called Job. George married Sarah Lewis in Shotwick in 1774. Anyone who can give a hand would be extremely welcome- it's been a puzzle for over 30 years! Thanks Angela Claydon

There are several decendants of Walter's, one of which was a famous water color artist. Could this be some of your family? I have no idea of any background of Truman to this man but do have info on his decendants and on the McClish family.

Hello~
I am just in the beginning stages of researching William Thomas Truman (8/12/1810-11/27/1867) and his wife Eliza A. (Smith) Truman. (3/18/1812-3-25-1874).
They are known to be the parents of Ruth (Truman) Bentley 1848-1918, buried in Sidney, Iowa, USA; and her sister, Esther Lucretia (Truman) Frazer (7/9/1852-12/6/1911), also buried in Sidney, Iowa, USA.
Their daughter Esther Lucretia was born in Syracuse, New York, so that is one place I need to start looking.
Has anyone heard of this couple? I have Thiel Smith as a possible father to Eliza A. per an old family note. No idea if there were other siblings to Esther and Ruth.
I can exchange info if anyone is looking for Esther Frazer or Ruth Bentley's descendents!!!
The genealogy of the Tremaine, Tremain, Truman, etc. families of Joseph of New London, CT and Philip of Westfield MA have been confused for years.
I have a connection to the Trumans via Elizabeth Truman (b. 1819), daughter of William. She married John Farnham and they emigrated to Australia c. 1855. Their son William Truman Farnham was my great-great grandfather. "Truman" turns up as a middle name several times among the descendants of John and Elizabeth.

William Truman came to Australia, possibly as a convict (I'm still checking into that), in the 1830s and died here in 1869.

I'm happy to share any info on this Truman connection and am thankful for any info others (have) share(d).
