Searching for Half-Brother John Tucker son of Erman Glen Tucker and Blythe G McCorkle Haynes

I am searching for my half-brother, John Tucker (or his children). John was probably born in Colorado between 1940-45. I met him once in the early 1960's, in Los Angeles, California when I was about 5 years old. He had two sons with him at the time, Devin and Blaine. They were a couple years younger than me (I was born in 1960).

I believe his mother's name was Blythe McCorkle/McCorkel, daughter of Elmer McCorkel and Lucille (Amerine) McCorkel. She was born in Illinois, lived in Iowa, and then Colorado. She divorced my father sometime after 1945 and I believe she remarried a Lester E. Haynes. There is a record for a burial of a Blythe G. Haynes in Fort Logan Cemetery in Colorado.

Any help from the community is appreciated.

Thanks, Michele Tucker Atchley

Wow, this thread has been busy. I haven't been on here in a few weeks. I've been working on the theory that the Roanna who was mother of James Ira and Elizabeth was born a Tucker and unmarried, mostly because our male Tucker DNA doesn't match any other Tucker DNA. Does anyone have a male Tucker in this line who could be tested?

No, I don't have a copy. The ancestry member who told about the information said it was actually an interview with a grand-daughter of Nelson Tucker who was Jesse Boon, Jr's cousin. If you look at the respondents to this thread, the member "mtnmus" is the person with the information. She was very kind to share it with me via email. Nelson and Jesse T were at Camp Chase in OH together. From a Google search, I learned that Camp Chase was a site for Union Army training and staging so it makes sense that Jesse might have been there prior to his field placement in the Civil War.

I did find Ruth's (Roanna's) parents and found Samuel's will in which he mentioned Jeremiah and Rebecca. I did not know that Rebecca's surname was York. So thanks very much for a piece of vital information. Do you know who her parents were by any chance?
I found a deed in the Harrison Co, WV courthouse in which Roanna (mother) and 2 daughters, Sarah (Sally) and Ruth were selling a piece of land which had belonged to Jeremiah before his death. So I do believe Jeremiah and Roanna were married. I have not found their marriage bond either.
I appreciate your reply!

One is that Roanna never married and Mosses Shinn was father to some of her children and second they were married. I never found a marrage for them so far.

Re: Tucker's of Kentucky

Martin and Melinda Owen Tucker were married in Kentucky in the late 1820's, I believe. They had 5 children, Lutittia, Egbert, John, William and Alice. They moved to Dallas County Iowa and then sold everything they had in 1852 to come to California to mine for gold. Martin was born in either 1808 or 1809, in Kentucky. Melinda was born in about 1812 in Tennesse according to many census records. I do not know Melinda's parents names or her siblings. Martin's father was Lambert Tucker, thought to be orginally from Virginia. I also do not know Martin's mothers name, or if he had any siblings. This branch came to California in 1852 and we are still here.

Lutittia married Allen Tibbitts and had 3 sons.
Egbert married Martha Fanning and had one son.
John married Ellen Ramshaw (I think was her last name) and had no children.
William married Catherine Dooley and had 2 sons, and at least one daughter.
Alice married Unknown Singer and had no children.

Trying to find out who Martin and Melindas parents were. I did find a census record of 1820 for a Lamb Tucker, in Kentucky.

Keeping this info out here for any newcomers to this family line. I'll still be here, looking. :)

Hey Jill,
Yes we are distantly related, both our lines go back to Willouby Tucker. Cousin Doug over in Melborne is from your line, he has done extensive research. He is the author of Florida Territorial Families, I have a copy of the book and I will see what is in it that pertains to your line. No I am not from Riverview but many of my family line lived in that area also. I hit many walls doing research, you just have to keep going and something will pop up. You need to know a little FL history, such as I kept looking for Tampa, but instead I should have been looking for Fort Brooke. Many names of towns have been changed over the years, counties have been broken up. I have found much information in Hernando and Alachua Counties. Hope this helps, will be in touch.
Bill Tucker

Looking for information about Thomas W. Tucker, born about 1779, probably in New York, possibly Dutchess County. Thomas was last found in 1850 census in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County. He probably died between 1850 & 1870. Married Lavina Clearwater (born ca. 1803 - died after 1880). Lavina could be his 2nd wife. They had at least 3 children: Mary H. (born abt. 1831) who married Hyatt Young or Youngs); Nelley (born abt. 1838); and Jeremiah (born 1839). Jeremiah is my gg-grandfather. Have copy of Jeremiah's death certificate.

Tucker's that settled in Florida pre-1845

I am working on my dad's family tree and I'm at a stand still. I'm trying to find my 2nd Great Gpa, Harney T Tucker's father. All that I have is many family trees here on Ancestry.com and they all show Lewis M Tucker, as his father. I'm having trouble finding official docs that tie Harney to Lewis.

According to census information that I found on Harney, his mother and father were born in GA. Again, I have been unable to find Lewis M in GA... I found a ton of other Tucker's, that also settled in Hernando, Alachua, Duval counties in Florida...but not coming up with anything ... Thanks to anyone out there that may be able to shed some light on this. BTW... Harney Tucker finally settled in Hillsborough County, FL and he is buried next to Caroline Thomas-Tucker. Thanks for any help!!!

I too, am a Tucker from Hillsborough Co., Riverview... My father is Jack Vincent Tucker. I have traced our tree back pretty far. I think my 4th Great Grandfather is Reverend John H Tucker, early FL pioneer... But, not compeletly sure.
Would you happen to be related? If so, would you happen to have any documents to prove Lewis M Tucker is the son of John H Tucker? I can only find an 1850 Census for Lewis and military muster rolls for the Seminole Indian War with his name on them. I need proof of birth date, place and parents of Lewis M. Tucker, married to Elizabeth Thomas.

I have spent soooo much time researching this information and I'm going in circles.. thanks for your time!! Jill :)

I myself have trouble going by census records because of misspellings and trouble deciphering handwriting. If I could get some validation that the above information is correct, it would help me out a bit. These census records also bring more questions then answers. I realize that Floras maiden name is Mauldin but who are all the Mauldin children who are in the household? Are they children from a previous marriage? Siblings of Flora? Did Rena Paul Tucker have siblings? Are the people in the census records above his parents? I want to know everything.

Re: Henry St. George Tucker

The Ashland St. George Tucker is not Henry St. George Tucker. The Tuckers are a mess to untangle. Here it is in a nutshell: Born in January of 1828, St. George Tucker was son of Henry St. George Tucker, a legislator, congressman, and judge in the early years of the Republic. His brother was the Hon. John R. Tucker, also a lawyer, teacher, and congressman. His uncle, John R. Tucker, was a Confederate Naval hero of the battle of Sailor’s Creek. Ashland’s Mr. Tucker studied three years at the University of Virginia in the mid-1840s and then transferred to William and Mary to study law under another uncle, Nathaniel Beverly Tucker. He was clerk of the Senate of Virginia 1851-52 and clerk of the House of Delegates 1853-59. In the mid-1850s, he established the Ashland Male Academy and finally in 1859, he resigned his post as clerk and devoted full time his famous but short-lived academy. In the 1850s he lived in Ashland with wife Elizabeth and 4 small children. The Ashland Grays became Company E of the Fifteenth Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, let by Col. Thomas P. August. Tucker was a valiant leader, even after contracting consumption. Indeed, his biographer in the William and Mary Quarterly asserted that “in the battle of Malvern Hill he was, despite his disease, in front of the fight,” after which he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the regiment. His worsening illness forced this driving man to rest in Charlottesville, where he died on 24 January 1863.

Re: Ancestry of Morris Tucker of Salisbury, MA & RI - d 1711

It seems that the first record of John Tucker in Hingman was assumed to be the was the same John Tucker of Kent. It looks like this assumption is incorrect.I found this reference at http://www.usgennet.org/family/tucker/eng/gene/tucker_darell...

"..Mr. Tucker in the "Genealogy [of the Tucker Family]" stated that Robert Tucker of Milton next Gravesend was "doubtless the progenitor of the Milton (Mass.) Tuckers," and identified his brother John with the settler of that name in Watertown and Hingham.
The wills given below, however, prove that John and Robert Tucker, sons of George Tucker of Milton next Gravesend, co. Kent, were living in England after their namesakes appear in Massachusetts--John being in England in 1639, 1642, and 1644, and his brother Robert being there in 1639, when, according to the will of his half brother George, he was evidently incapable of managing his own affairs. Neither John nor Robert Tucker of Massachusetts is ever called Gentleman in the Colonial records, although the members of the Kentish family are regularly designated as Gentlemen or Esquires. The conclusion is, therefore, unavoidable, that the English ancestry of these two settlers of Massachusetts has yet to be discovered."

The question remains- was Morris Tucker born in the colonies? Or did he immigrate from England?

Hi Bob, I have done a lot of research on the Morris Tucker family as well. You can contact me at ndcwgl(at)ideaone.net if you would like to collaborate. I have a tree on Ancestry named rachael's tree. I am 11th generation: Morris, John, Benoni, Rufus, Silas, Lyman, Miranda, Kate, Martha, Eileen, myself. Many references have Morris born in Salisbury, his parents John Tucker and Rose Struman born at Kent, Gravesend, England. Although, as yet I have not found solid proof of this.
Rachael
Parents of Freeman Sydney Tucker

My grandmother was Martha Tucker, daughter of Freeman Sydney Tucker. I have quite a bit of information on Freeman, but very little on his parents.

So here is what I known about Freeman. He was born 1 Feb 1847 in Jersey County, Illinois. He was the youngest of 5. His siblings were Martha, Larkin, Harmon, and Dickinson. He married Mary Lorain on 30 July 1869. Along about the mid 1870s, Freeman moved to Nebraska, first settling in Blair. It would appear that at the very least he was joined by his brother Larkin, and a contingent of the Lorain family.

In Nebraska, Freeman rose to a position of prominence and can be found in historical texts (or at least one.) The following is an excerpt that discusses his parents.

"…Freeman Sydney Tucker, who is now carefully directing municipal affairs. He was born in Jersey County, Illinois, February 1, 1857, a son of David M. and Hannah (Grammar) Tucker, the former a native of Virginia and the latter of Ohio. The father was a river captain who made trips out of St. Louis for a number of years. During the high water of 1844 his property was all swept away and that was his last year of active connection with navigation interests. He had been captain of the Bonnycord* and also of a number of other boats. He had also been an overseer on a plantation in his early days. After leaving the river work he went to Jerseyville, Illinois, where he engaged in wagon making, and there he made his home until death called him when he was sixty-nine years of age."
*I have learned there was a boat called the Bon Accord, so I'm assuming that was probably it.

The only other thing I have for David is a birth year of 1811 (which is a bit iffy) and the middle initial “M” from the census. Interestingly, there is a marriage record for a David M. Tucker and Hannah Mize in Madison County, Illinois in 1836, but not sure how the name Mize could be mistaken for Grammar, or vice versa. The marriage year would be about right considering 1838 is the earliest estimated birth year I have for their oldest child, but it’s complicated by a historic text than makes reference to a David and Hannah Mize living in that county.

In looking at old records and historic texts for Jersey County (or what would become Jersey County) Illinois, I find a number of Tuckers, but none that I can conclusively tie to any of my Tuckers. I thought that Freeman was kind of an unusual first name, but in doing my research I am seeing that amongst Tuckers it’s fairly common. I know at least one of the Freemans (the one born in about 1864) is the son of Larkin Tucker, Freeman Sydney Tucker’s brother, but I see others in both Nebraska and Illinois. I'm wondering if somewhere back in time it started with common ancestor named Freeman.

I'm at a loss as to where to search next for more information on David and Hannah. Since the census records contain little info from 1840 on back, I'm having difficulty spotting him/them; I see them in 1850 and 1860, but nothing before or after.

I've also researched riverboats and captains and haven’t seen him in anything available online, and I can’t even tell if he went with the family to Nebraska, stayed in Illinois, moved somewhere else entirely, or died before they left.

Does anyone know of this branch of the family, or have any suggestions on how to proceed? I have Freeman's marriage and death records but they don't really tell me anything other than what is already known.
Good Morning:

Morris Tucker may well have been an immigrant to America. There is a tradition that he came from near Bournemouth on the south coast of England. Certainly, by 1659, he has a substantial household, but no wife.

I suspect that he converted to the Society of Friends later in life and this was the reason that several of his sons and he left Salisbury for Tiverton. He was "warned out" of Tiverton in 1704 and settled in Providence where he died in 1711.

Cheers,

Tom Keenan
