Hi Cath,

From your info i believe the Edinburgh Tuff's you are familiar with are not my direct family but almost certainly related. The Tuff's on my side are no longer here so it is difficult to get more than that unless i do separate research but from what i do have, i know that some of them were "Coopers" in the brewery and also that there are living relatives so good luck with that.

I'm going to try to conclude my research on my mother's side and i am only on a trial with this website so not sure how long we will be able to communicate but thanks for the info and good luck with you research

If i can be off further help just let me know

rgds
Alex

Alex

Cath - thanks for replying and the info...sounds as though you have done a great deal of research. I am researching my mothers side currently so know more about that, so apologies in advance for limited info.

However, Tuff is my father's side which i haven't researched too much yet, but here is limited info i know -

There are at least 2 branches of the Tuff's living in and around Edinburgh whom are related. The family isn't too close knit so i don't know much other than my own directs.

Alexander Tuff was my father (12 3 1936 - 2010)baker.

My Mother was Elspeth Tuff MS Ellis ( 28 02 1932 - 10 06 2007).

Children are David (b1962 - present), Anne (b1963- present) and myself (b1964).

Grandparents were Alexander Tuff (11 10 1912 - 23 01 1986) lorry driver and Christina Tuff MS Ireland (02 10 1911 - 14 12 1976)

Great grandparents on grandfathers side were John Tuff (Cooper) and Jessie Mathers Tuff MS Campbell whom married in Leith, Edin on 20 01 1911

Great grandmother on grandmothers side (father not named on birth certificate) was Christina Forgan Dewar Ireland (afterwards Notman)

Sorry i don't know more at the moment but hope this helps

Rgds

Alex Tuff

They moved to Leith were Alexander & John Tuff was born in 1843 , the census tells us in 1851 That Mary was a widow , so if this is part of your history maybe you can help me Thank you

I've been trying to get info about my Dad's (Tuff) side of the family for a while. I have just started to upload info about his lineage. Maybe it would be interesting to note that before 1850, 80% of Tuff's came from Kent. You are welcome to look at my family tree posted on this site although it's not fleshed out much. I still have to insert dates, places, etc.
My Great Grandfather, Lorenzo Parsons Tuff, came over from England to New Brunswick where a lot of my relatives still live. Grandpa Tuff came from Canada as well.

Do you have any information you could post? I am another Tuff living in Canada, and I am a bit stuck exactly where my ancestors came over from Scotland. The farthest back I know if John Tough, born in 1815 in Scotland, though I'm not sure where. He was married to Christina Ann Roberston (born about 1816, also in Scotland) They had eight children, all of whom were born in Ontario Canada.

cath.
i can help tou with the origin of the tuff name,i have traced it thru england, scotland, normandy to norway.there are arguments as to the original spelling of the name, but
even into this century, the majority of names listed as immigrants from norway are tuffs.as far as john is concerned i am having my own problems with joseph, whom i have traced back to his marriage in dorset, symondsbury in 1759. i have checked all records in england, and cant come up with a joseph brn abt. 1730.i believe the clan originally were given title to lands in scotland, then fell out of favor and fled to england.

joe tuff
U.S.A.

TUFF: NY

I have been looking for information about my Tuff family. In the Farm Journal Illustrated Rural Directory of Onondoga County, NY 1917 it lists a Susia( I suspect an error in copying). She is listed with Herbert Tuff and Leon Tuff. Leon is my grandfather born in 1898 and died in 1985. I was wondering if you came across any information about either of them? I don't know how Susie is related to either of them. The Farm Journal has her listed as the housekeeper.

Any information would be wonderful!
Thanks,
Julia

Her grandfather's family all lived in Stratford. They were railway men. Nicola believes her line of the Tuff family originally came from Peterborough/Lincolnshire.
Hi Lee,
Thanks for the message. The 1851 census of Chilham states that Charlotte aged 30 was born at Godmersham. Not only is James listed as her father on both marriage cetificates, but he was also the informant of the death of John Roalfe in 1854, only an x, the mark of James Tuff, present at the death.I have photocopies of both marriages. Will have a look at your family tree. Many thanks.
Heather

Hi

Your Charlotte is probably the daughter of James & Ann Tuff. I can't 100% prove that, I'll have to look at the parish records. The Ellen Tuff you mention is a daughter of James and Ann as well

I've put most of the Tuff family up on this website. I've traced it back to Thomas Tuff who was born in the late 1600's

Regards

Lee Jacobs

Hi Ian

My 3rd great grandmother, Sarah Ann Tuff, was born in Wye in 1837. Her parents were George (1819)& Charlotte(1818). She also had a brother, Elias(1840). She later married John Jull Frier, (who was born at Hernhill) and they lived at Dunkirk.
It is possible that Elizabeth is Sarah's sister as there is only two families of Tuff in wye at 1841, the other being a 80 year old with a 45 year old son. What do you think?
