Seeking family information on Daniel R. Tunis b. 1824 d. 1883. Buried Van Duzer Cemetery, Sullivanville, Town of Veteran, Chemung Co., NY. Married 1st to Mary A. Prentiss b. 1826 d. 1846; 2nd to Mary A. Hoffman b. 1825 d. 1897. Children were William b. 1846 d. 1910 with 1st wife, Edna b. 1866 d. 1946 with 2nd wife. William married Hannah A. Casterline; two children: Jay H. b. 1873 married Harriet "Hattie" Gue, lived in Horseheads, NY; and Caroline "Carrie" b. 1874 married John C. Calhoun Sr., lived in Worcester, Ma. Have more information to share, would appreciate someone to help me fill in some of the blanks on their tree.Thank you.

My grandmother (Caroline Tunis Griffiths) was called Carrie by her husband. Her parents were Rees Tunis and Melissa Revell. Her sister was Lil Kellogg - I think Lil lived in Texas at some point. I also remember my great Aunt Edna Dilamarter, who was Horaces sister and great Uncle Harry. The Carrie in your picture might be my grandmother. I'm new to this - how do I view the picture?

I'm researching my geneology for the names Tones which may have begun as Tunis, Tennes, or Teunis. Census takers wrote what they heard. My family is from Holland, came over from Deutchland on a ship named Vanderwall that blew off course and may have docked in Canada. They arrived here about 1854 but I've not been able to determine where.

One of my great grandfathers was Lucius Victor (Luke)Tunis, born in 1856 or so (I do not have the material before me at the moment.) in Dubuque Co., Iowa. He was a son of Victor Tunis (born ca. 1805 in France) and Matilda Kibby Delong (first marriage) Tunis. Matilda was born, I think, in Indiana, her Connecticutborn father Lucius Kibby having moved all over and up and down the rivers in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana before settling in Delaware Co., which is just to the west of Dubuque Co.. Victor and his brother Alois settled near Rickardsville in Dubuque Co. among a number of French Canadians, and it appears that Alois's wife Marguerite (Mandeville?)was born in Canada. I am wondering whether Victor Tunis's family did not first settle in Canada and then join other Canadians down in the American Midwest. I have some on the descendants of my great grandfather's brother Frank; I'll look into those records to see whether there is anyone named William E. Tunis. I know that there is also a Tunis surname that started out as the Dutch Teunis. (One of the replies to your posting concerning Tunises from Philadelphia who went to Canada during the Revolution may concern Dutch Teunises who moved down from Long Island or thereabouts to Pennsylvania. I am only speculating here.) Whether there is any connexion between the two names I do not know because I knew nothing farther back up the line than Victor.

Does any of this sound like your family's story (Iowan Tunises from Canada)?

I think that I found the face for the pictures .
Granny other sister Ethel married Horace Dilamarter and one of there son Raymand married Caroline Spry and she went by Carrie . So I think that is my face for one of the pictures .

I'm not much help. All I have are names and no pictures.

Lilian had a sister Caroline Tunis Of Toronto [1884-1965] was married to Ernest Griffith.

Only close name to Carrie I have for a cousin would be a Clara Tunis and all I have is a birthdate of Dec 4 1883. She was the d/o William Edward & Mary Jane [Kneller] Tunis. They were from West Flamborough, Ontario and are interred at Christ Church Anglican there with their son Roy Mallock Tunis.

I have pictures ...with no names on them . There are some with Carrie . I know Granny had a Cousin name Carrie .

Ok, I dug a lil deeper. Per my record this Reese would be the grandson of Rees and Maria and yes, I have names of their ancestry back to Philadelphia in 1683 and back to Europe, but I gotta run now. I'll be back and see what all your interested in learning? Unless someone else wants to chime in?

I have ancestry of a Reese R. Tunis, born 14 April 1917 at Illinois and died 13 October 1992 at Chicago, burt I don't have any descendency. I got this spelling from an online tree. Might this be your line? What's the years for your Rees and Melissa?

There are Names on the back of some of the pictures . I need help who's who ...Some of the names has been past down .

E.(Edward) Harley Tunis was a self-employed house painter. He and Carrie had 2 daughters (Margaret Elizabeth married Fred Hyer), and Mildred (never married). They also adopted a nephew and re-named him Edward Currie Tunis. This is part of my family.

Did you know that the Tunis families some also go by the last name of Truno. Maybe that might help you in your search.

I know my grandfather Natale Tunis aka Trunzo he lived in Scranton PA.

Have you checked any of the census's? That might show children.

Have you tried to obtain a copy of their death certificate? Might tell you more who they were?

My grandfather came from Italy and then resided in Scranton, PA until he died. Do you know the names of your grandparents? I also knwo that Tunis Family were also known as Trunzo Family don't know why they changed the last name from Trunzo to Tunis?

Looks like a lot of George Tunis's born in that time frame, but according to the 1900, 1910, 1920 census, your George Anthony Tunis was born in Kansas on 1 Oct 1877 (per WWI draft reg.).

In the 1880 census of Belmont twp., Kingman county, Kansas, there is a George Tunis (age2). His parents are Felix Tunis, age 29, born France. And his mother is Elsy, age 24, born in New York.

Might this Felix Tunis be your ancestor? born 1848 France

If you are looking for the same Ernest Anthony Tunis that lived most of his life in Garber, OK, it was my father. He was born December 14, 1921. His fathers name was George Anthony Tunis and his mother's name was Maggie Mae Johnson Tunis. That is as far as I have found or can remember at the time.

My mom on the other hand is Louise or Ada Louise Maples now known as Louise Watkins in Aurora, CO. My myself live in Michigan. Alicia, I think I am related to you! I was just talking to my mom in Colorado and she was saying that there are family all over Oklahoma that I am related to. Garber, OK is one of them. My grandfather was Ernest A. Tunis but passed in Feb/2001.

I know of some tunis' that live in CO one of them being my grandfather who passed on a few years ago but not too sure of the the full name I know his middle name was Anthony. I am still trying to find out more about my ancestry because of being adopted. I know my mom is also a Tunis and lives in Colorado, I have given her this sight so maybe when she has time to sit down to look I will let her know. As far as them coming from Canada I am not sure about that. I will get back to you tomorrow about what the first name of my grandfather's name was.

Yes, there were some TUNIS'S who came from Canada. But they originated in Philadelphia first, then went to Canada about the Revolutionary War time.

I have a William Edwin Tunis, born 4 Oct 1874 in Ontario, but have no knowledge of his descendency or whereabouts. Most re-entered the states for work.

I have just come from Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. Andrew Sigourney is buried on a lot owned by "Mrs. Sigourney"
There are 5 interments on the lot as follows:

1. Andrew Sigourney grave #2 1827-1869 Tombstone has 6 Nov 1827-9 Feb 1869

2. Minnie E. King grave #1 1841-1894 Tombstone has 24 Mar 1841-1 May 1894

3. John E. Tunis grave #6 1834-1866 Tombstone has John E. Tunis, son of John & Rebecca B. Tunis 23 Jun 1834-23/28 Feb 1866

4. John W. Tunis grave #7 1861-1863 Tombstone broken & unreadable)

5. Carolina E. J. Tunis grave #6 (I believe this may be a mistake because John E. Tunis is in grave 6 and is an adult)If she were a child she may be in grave #7 with John W. Tunis or if she was an adult, she is in another grave. There is no tombstone.

So, Minnie unknown Sigournry must have married a King, also. I will have to goo to the Circuit Court Office to find the marriages when I have time. Give me your email address and I will send you pictures of the lot and interment cards. Mine is timbonney@cox.net.

I am interested in what else you know about the Tunis' and about the journal.

"The Minnie I knew" This Minnie (maiden name unknown) was born about 1840. She did live in Philadelphia in 1880 when that census was done, but she was born in NC and married both times in Norfolk, VA. Thank you also to the person who found her second husband's, Andrew Sigourney, cemetery information. As I said, what I really need to know is if she first married (early 1860s) John Tunis or Lewis Tunis (brothers) because we want to know our journal writer's father's name. Thanks.

Andrew Sigourney died 1869 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia (across the road from Cedar Grove Cemetery).

He is the only Sigourney in either cemetery. Will try and get exact birth and death dates but will have to go to the cemetery to do so. Will let you know what I find. Could 'Minnie' have amrried again? Also, there is no Minnie Tunis in either cemetery.

I am not related to this person but am cataloging a travel journal of one of his descendants, the daughter of a Minnie who must have married either John E. Tunis (1834-1866) or Lewis (1841-1864). We are most anxious to know which man was Minnie's husband and what was her maiden name. Thank you so much for posting the cemetery dates to this mailing list. Minnie then married Andrew Sigourney, also of the 54th Regt. VA Militia, but he died before 1870 too.

STARTLING SUICIDE -- Richard TUNIS, one of Stockton’s pioneers and a highly respectable citizen, committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a Colt’s navy revolver, on Saturday morning last. The act was committed at the dwelling of I.V. LEFFLER, on Stanislaus street, between Weber avenue and Channel street, to which house he had been removed the previous day in order the better to receive such care and attention as his debilitated condition demanded. Coroner BOND was notified of the sad occurrence, and that officer took charge of the body and summoned a jury of inquest.

RICHARD TUNIS’ WILL -- Richard TUNIS, deceased, has left $500 in gold coin to the Ladies’ Benevolent Association of this city, the sum to be deposited in the Savings and Loan Society’s bank and to be drawn semi-annually, principle and interest, at the option of the legatees. He leaves $200 to John NYE, and the remainder of his property goes to Lloyd J. DAVIS and 3 daughter, Philadelphia.

Anyone know the family of this Richard and next mentioned Captain Benjamin Tunis?
