Hi there, I am helping a friend of mine to search for his
father, who served with the American forces in England from
around 1952 onwards, the man's name is Michael Earl Tupper and he would be around 80years old now. It is believed that
he came from Colorado. Would anyone have any knowledge of
him, we would be very pleased for any information. Gary was born in 1954 and his mother's name is Joyce.

Hi, Bev: If you want, send an email address to me at atan444@gmail.com and I'll let you know if anything comes along to clarify this whole situation. I'm doing a Tupper family history for my family and I've started it at Thomas Tupper's son--because I can prove his dates are accurate. I had always wondered how Anne Hodgson Tupper could have had her one child in her 50s! Anne

Who were the two brothers who came to the U.S.? I had thought the emigrant was Thomas Tupper, born in Bury, Sussex; emigrated to U.S. about 1636 (I haven't got my records with me right now so pardon the fuzziness), settled in Lynn, Mass. but then founded Sandwich, Mass., with nine other men in 1638. Some doubt has been cast on this story, though, so if you know anything different I would love to hear it.

Bev, the story about the brothers leaving Germany and settling in Kent, Sussex, and the Netherlands comes, if I'm remembering correctly, from Burke's Landed Gentry. However, the Tuppers in Sussex have said that story can't be true because they have evidence that their ancestors were in Sussex long before the brothers left Germany. The whole story of Tuppers in Sussex is a bit blurry right now. Some genealogists have asserted that the earliest Tupper genealogies got the whole story about Thomas Tupper and his ancestors wrong. They say there was a second Thomas Tupper, 19 years younger, in Petworth, Sussex at the same time as the Thomas Tupper who was believed to be the emigrant lived in Bury, Sussex. I have no idea who's right and what's up, and I haven't found anyone who will finance a several-month stay in England so that I could do the research! I hope someone does it soon.

The burial record for Lilian was one of the only things that I can find on her with the current information we have. I asked Grandma about the trunks after I spoke to Iris and she remebered them. She said that they were filled with her fathers and Aunt Ellen's things and that there were some letters. Unfortunately she believes that they were with a number of things in her basement during a flood when she lived in Calmar. So...back to square one. My Aunt Paddy is going to look again through a box with old photos and papers. Hopefully she finds something this time around. I am planning a trip to Alberta to see Grandma soon, so I can always visit the Edmonton archives.(I also plan to stop in Revelstoke BC on the way as that is where I found the marriage certificate for William Aubrey Tupper's first marriage in 1910)

HI,
I have also traced back to around that time period with the Tupper side. I have spoken to my Grandma as well as her sister Iris, but neither of them can provide much info. The only other thing that I can do is wait for the copy of my Grandms's birth registration to arrive in the mail. Hopefully it will have a little more to offer (D.O.B. or parents) . I will let you know any information that I do find. It could take up to 6 weeks for the papers to arrive. Talk soon
Sarah

Charles Hibbert Tupper`s law partnership with Frederick Peters

I am researching my great-grandfather Frederick Peters, who resigned as Liberal premier of Prince Edward Island in October 1897 to move all the way across Canada to Victoria to start a law partnership there with lawyer (and former Conservative federal cabinet minister) Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper. Peters moved his family to Victoria from Charlottetown and Tupper moved his family from Halifax, and they had complementary houses built in the new Victoria suburb of Oak Bay. Based on city directories, the partnership ended some time in 1902. Does anyone know the reason why they split up? I have heard that Tupper went to Vancouver to practice law, but he did not sell the Oak Bay house, apparently keeping it as a weekend retreat. -- Sam McBride

Florence: Louisa Jane Tupper is my gg grandmother. Her daughter, Eveline (Lina), is my great-grandmother. I heard a story as a kid that one of our ancestors in England ran away the night before her wedding to marry someone else. I think it might have been Charlotte, Louisa's mother;it doesn't seem to fit with what I've found about Louisa. Eveline told stories to my aunts (now in their 90's) that members of English or Scottish royalty would visit them in Nova Scotia when she (Eveline) was a little girl. Does anyone have any more info on these women?

I was mistaken when I wrote (12 Jun 2010, 3:16 PM) that there are no records showing a middle initial of "W" for George Dutcher, b. abt. 1835, husband to Henrietta Tupper.

An index to Minnesota death records (available at www.familysearch.org) gives James Adelbert Dutcher, male, d. 05 Jul. 1889, Mazeppa, Wabasha, Minnesota. Age 13, b. 1876, in Minnesota. White, single, son of G. W. and Henrietta.

An index to Wisconsin marriage records (also at www.familysearch.org) shows the 25 Aug. 1895 marriage at Stockholm, Pepin, Wisconsin, of Fred Sibley, b. Mazepa, son of Joseph and Emily Sibley, and Ida Dutcher, daughter of G. W. and Mrs. G. W. Dutcher.

My comments concerning the various census records attributed to William M. Dutcher still stand.

William M. Dutcher of Clark, Wisconsin -- his possible connection to George Dutcher, b. abt. 1835, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin

I definitely agree this is worth looking into.

Finding the Ruloff & Sarah Dutcher family in the 1860 census could add some clarity, but so far I have been unable to come with any kind of candidate for them whatsoever. The lack of a better candidate is probably what led the bio's author to conclude that the William Dutcher found in Olive, Ulster, New York was the William M. Dutcher who later lived in Clark, Wisconsin -- but I am still convinced they were two different men.

William M. Dutcher served in the Wisconsin 2nd during the Civil War. He received a pension, as did his widow. His pension file might (or might not) clear up a lot of confusion -- but I'd like a little more evidence that he is related to our ancestor George Dutcher before I think about paying the NARA fee (now up to $75 for the first one hundred pages, with additional charges if the file runs longer).

Thank you Steve, I agree with your analysis. I was struggling with some of the details as well as the lack of connection to George. However, I feel this is worth looking further into.

I will see what I can do to contact the group who submitted the bio, with the hopes that they will lead us to the author.

In the meantime, I am also looking into a lead regarding Ruloff/Rudoff Dutcher, his siblings (who reportedly settled in the Granville Wisconsin area in the 1850's) and their father Reveland to see where information about them might lead.

my direct email: jandkjhohnson@hotmail.com

Thank you,

Kris

Kris --

It is an interesting lead, but I think there are some problems here.

First off, while the age of G. W. Dutcher in the 1850 census for Granville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a good match for our George Dutcher, there are no other records in which our George Dutcher is shown with a middle initial.

Additionally, the author of the bio (whoever he or she may be) asserts that William M. Dutcher is found in Granville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1850, and simultaneously asserts that he is found in Springfield, Otsego, New York that same year. A look at both censuses shows that they are entirely different families, so it cannot be a case of the Ruloff and Sarah Dutcher family being double-counted as a result of an interstate move in 1850.

The author also asserts that William M. Dutcher is found in Olive, Ulster, New York in 1860. This census in fact shows a William Dutcher (not William M. Dutcher) living with the family of Daniel and Sible A. Peck, no other Dutchers present. This does not strike me as a conclusive match to William M. Dutcher, the son of Ruloff and Sarah Dutcher.

I don't see any evidence that the author has a source other than the 1850 census for Granville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin for stating that William M. Dutcher is the brother of our George Dutcher, and the inconsistencies listed above lead me to believe that the author of the bio is too quick to link people to censuses on the basis of a rough coincidence of names and birth dates.

I think we should try to identify the author of the bio and get in contact with him or her to learn the basis for linking our George Dutcher to this William M. Dutcher. Perhaps there is another source for this linkage that is not shown in the bio.

(Since I am being slightly critical of the bio's author, I should in fairness add that the bio is for the most part very nicely sourced, and very well written).

I think his name was also Earl Tupper according to a elderly aunt that was my dads half sister. My dad was Earl (Tupper) born 12-15-15 in Charles City ,Iowa. My Granmother (Laura Stuffel) had ran away from home to work at a "Dime Store" in a big town in Iowa.At age 17 she met Earl Tupper and they married about 1914 BUT- Laura's parents found out he was already married to a school teacher and they had the marriage annuled. She was sent to live with an aunt in Charles City Iowa till the baby was born and then she and the rest of the family moved to Bruce wisconsin. Laura married William Fetting about 1918- when my dad was 3. William fetting adopted him when they were married. It may not have been a legal adoption. I also can't find a marriage certificate either - the records don't go beyond 1915.I heard that children would just take on the new fathers name without it being legally done in courts. Would be interested in any more info. Thanks alot - Elaine

Elaine,

I don't know how far you got in your search for your Tupper lineage, but I just came across these old posts, and I am a relative of Earl Tupper working on the family tree. I can tell you a good deal more than what you knew at the point this post was written... but given that 10 years have past, perhaps your knowledge now surpasses mine, who knows? Would be interested in working together however, as I know little of Earl's descendents.

Cheers,
Ken Lange
Ottawa, ON, Canada

Thanks, but I just had a look, and I read the name "Charles Pitcher." Ancestry.com indexes it under "Charles Ritcher." Whatever the correct reading, the first two letters are clearly very different from the "Du" in Dutcher for the George Dutcher family immediately above... which is a shame, since we are so badly in need of a lead on George Dutcher.

Please keep in touch as your research continues. I would be happy to provide you my email address if you would like to correspond offline. And if I turn anything up, I'll post it here.

The only clue to George Dutcher's family that I am finding in a cursory search of my records is that in 1870 he lived next door to a Charles and Sara Dutcher.

George and Henrietta Dutcher are found in the
1870 US Fed Census
Barton, Washington Cty, Wisconsin
August 1, 1870
Dwelling #291, Family # 238

Charles Dutcher is from Vermont and is about 49 years old. His children are ?ayes, Mary, Sara, Lella, Louis

Charles would be approximately 14 years older than George, could be an older brother, an uncle, a cousin, or just a mere conincidence that they have the same last name.

I do not have access to ancestry records at this time, so I am unable to follow up on this again. I do find a Charles Dutcher married to a Sara Vossberg in the family trees on rootsweb.com, however no notes or dates.
