Ella Turnbull (if it's the same person) was my great-aunt. She lived at 21 Westend Place, Tweedmouth until her death in the early 1990s. She was a tiny woman who loved life and was always quite a character. My grandmother was her half-sister, Thomasina Dick (nee Burgin (sp?), she passed away in 1987 in Edinburgh. My grandmother's brother Robert Jamieson and his family (son "Young Robert" and daughter Jean) continued to live in Berwick, although I am not sure if they are still around. I'll check with my mom if she has any other information.

I believe that Clarence was my grandfather who I never got to meet due to his early death. He died when my father was about 6 years old, i think, that would have put his death about 1932, plus or minus. The time and place seems to be about right, and one of my Aunts was named Jettie, and after talking to my mother this morning, I learned that he did have a brother that moved to California and raised/trained dogs for the movie business, though she could not remember his name. One of my cousins is named after him.

Hi Jean
Thanks for prompt reply.
I think I must have the wrong family as my John married 1841=Margaret Swift,b.1821. & had a son Michael 1846 & daughter Margaret.1848. John was a Freeman of Berwick apparently & his son Michael [Master Mariner]had 11 children, the eldest daughter Jane Ann was my grandmother.
Glad I saw yours as I would have been away on the wrong branch!!
I will keep searching,thanks.
Best Wishes,Laureen
Hi -I saw your post of 2007 & wondered if you had unravelled the Turnbull/Scott family. I believe they are the parents of my 3X gt Grandfather, John Turnbull b. 6 Nov 1805 in Berwick upon Tweed. Julian{Julia?]Scot's parents are David Scot & Jane Ross according to Family Search. Can you give me the full list of John's siblings-if any, please?

Looking for the parents of James D. Turnbull, b. Dec 1815 Canada, m. Alma (Randall?) and where they were in Canada or NY before 1840. I have found James D. Turnbull in U.S. Census 1840-1900. His daughter Libbie (Elizabeth) is my line. I have a lot about her children if anyone is interested. Can anyone point me to some sources I could try for finding the family pre-1840?
Thanks,
Laura

Jim:

Now I get it....you're the grandson of my grandmother's brother. I was thinking you were the son. Sorry. That makes us second cousins.....so "welcome to the family." :-) For the record, I'm happy that you contacted me.

I gave a bit of info on Jack and Mary, in that they moved to Massachusetts and then to Florida. Other than that, I don't have much more at the moment. As soon as I can, I'll get it from my mom (she's doing better, is moving a bit, and she may be able to talk soon....she had a tracheotomy).

It's interesting that you say Mary may hav ebeen from Unst. I never knew that. Wonder how she managed to get to Dumbarton?

I heard that the Harden family were engineers or carpenters. The Turnbulls were a myriad of things as they were from the borders. Some of the professions were Forester, military, and railway guard. Note also that my grandpa's dad (Robert) helped build the rail lines down near Durham, and his dad helped build the lines in the borders area (namely between Ancrum, St Boswells and Melrose...and over to Berwick). He was then a railway guard, but died of Tubercular Peritonitis in March 1897 (the same thing that his son George, and my grandfather's brother, died of on 3 June 1940 after being evacuated from Dunkirk).

I've enclosed a file, but I don't think it'll send because it's an Adobe file. It's some info on the death of my grandparents.

Please send me a private message on here with your email so we can share more info. Also, if you're on FaceBook by chance, please let me know, too.

---Rick
Rick,

I think the Hamish you are refering to is James' son (my father). James had one son (James known as Hamish) and two daughers (Elizabeth and Joyce). Elizabeth passed away a few years ago.

I've not been able to find out much about Jack and Mary. I believe they emigrated to America soon after they married. Mary, as far as I can find, was from Unst in Shetland (the most northern part of Scotland).

It is interesting that Jack was a Master Carpenter. Seems most of the Harden's were either Carpenters or Engineers. I kept up the tradition and became an engineer.

I live in the East Coast of Scotland although my parents and sister still live in Dumbarton. I was a civillian engineer with the Military (30 years) until a few years ago. The appeal of more cash was too great. Now work for a major Facilities Management Company.

Speak later

Jim

Jim:

That certainly seems to be it. I thought that John (who went by Jack) had a brother named "Hamish," and not John, though? I just asked my dad, who asked my mom (she's in the hospital and not well, although she's better), and she said Hamish (I may have spelled that wrong).

As for my Uncle Jack and Aunt Mary, they lived in Braintree, Massachusetts (part of Boston) until the 1990s or so, when they moved to Boynton Beach, Florida. Uncle Jack died in December 2000, and Aunt Mary died in April 2001. Interestingly enough, Uncle Jack was a master carpenter, and he helped to build all oft he Howard Johnson hotel chain in the northeast of the USA.

Let's exchange more info as it seems we're definitely related....cousin. Where are you living now? I'm in Germany with the military, near Bitburg.

Talk to you later.

---Rick
Rick,

Thanks for your reply.

Double checked and it appears to be the same Isabella Mailer Harden. Were her parents:

James Smillie Harden 1882 - 1926 and Ann Clark Mailer 1882 - 1936? From their marriage cert they were married 15 Jan 1907 in High St United Free Church Manse, Bonhill Road Dumbarton (my parents still live in that area). James was born Feb 1907. He married Margaret Ramsay in 31 Oct 1934. John Mailer Harden (his brother) was his witness.

John emigrated to the States after he married Mary Smith in 1942. I've not been able to trace any record of him.

Jim

Sorry about the lack of details. They are buried at Bedlay cemetery in Chryston Lanarkshire but they lived in Glenboig Lanarkshire Scotland. Hope this is of some help and sorry again for being so vague.

Some clues as to location (country, state, province, county, territory) would be helpful, Elizabeth.

Jessie Bayne Turnbull

I thought I would add this as I have a photograph of a grave marker for Jessie Bayne Turnbull and her husband Alexander Baird. Alexander Died on 1912 aged 46 years and Jessie died in 1934 aged 87 years. Also their son John, husband of Edith Constance Barclay died 1940. If this is someone's relation, I would be more than happy to send on this photograph by email.

kindest regards to all

Elizabeth Grieve
