Julie,
Spinster lead me to look it up in Wikipedia. In that time period it meant and older unmarried female. Instead of spinster widow would have been the proper term to apply, if she was married prior to the birth.

The person that entered the record may have used spinster for all that did not have a living spouse.

Gene

Julie,

I am aware of that record. Which is the baptism record, as he was born the 23 of Feb. 1829 according to his bio in 1900. I have no proof that David the son of Ann is the mother of my David. That she is listed as a spinster lends credence to her being the mother and widower of John.

Now to find the death record of John, which had to occur prior to his birth and after David's conception.

Gene

Noticed your post going back to 2006. I am researching the Routledges of Cumberland. Henry R married Margaret Tweddle and Thomas was born 25.7.1763. He married Elizabeth Routledge in 1785. Does anything of this resound with you.
Sarah Routledge born 9.1.1788 married Willam Tweddle in Farlam on 30,4,1808. My ancestor, George's son John Routledge worked for the Tweddle's at one time in their carriage/tannery business. I know George married a Sarah - there were 2. Sarah Little and Sarah Harris and my John was born to George Routledge and Sarah ? in 1818. The ? is my problem so I hope your knowledge of the Tweddles may help.

If you look in FreeBMD you will find him. Death registered at Middlesbrough September Quarter 1908 Vol 9d Page 377 is the GRO reference. He's in as William H. Not sure Hetherington was his middle name as the most likely birth is registered Stokesley March Quarter 1877 as William Henry so it will be interesting to see what it says on the death certificate.

Richard T. Tweddle b. 11 Nov 1833

I am looking for the immigration and family story for Richard T. Tweddle, b. 11 Nov 1833. He was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, England, but migrated to the U.S. when he was young. Ported in New Orleans. Moved to Delhi, LA. Married Cornelia Smart on 22 Dec 1866. Looks as if this is a first generation immigrant, but other Tweddle family lived in Delhi (aka Deerfield in 1850) prior to immigration. Several sites list Richard Tweddle & Mary Newton as parents (born abt 1810 in Cumberland, England), but I have not been able to make a positive verify. Any help piecing this together is greatly appreciated!

Alderman Tweddle

The Sunderland Echo, Fri 21st August 2009, page 9, has printed a letter from a reader concerning an `Alderman Tweddle`. Alongside the letter is a photo of said Alderman officially opening The Wavendon public house, High Barnes, Sunderland, in 1959.

The letter writer states that Alderman Tweddle was a `very nice man`, who lived in a council owned property in Fordham Road, Ford Estate, Sunderland. Letter writer also states that he believed Alderman Tweddle had a son named `Ernie`.

Whilst I have your attention, can anyone relate to the marriage of a Joseph Tweddle to a Mary A Retallick which took place in Sunderland, Co Durham, England in 1894?

Regards,

Jim
Virginia,

My ancestors through my paternal grandmother were Tweddles, many from Stapleton. There are two Archibalds in my line born 1866 and 1826 therefore neither are yours but the chances are they are related - Stapleton is a sparsely populated area. I do know that David Tweddle 1719-1790 and his wife (m. 1744) Jannet Johnston 1721-1783 have Canadian and Cumbrian descendants but as yet haven't dug up anything else relating to that couple. That David's father was John Tweddle 1696-1783 and his father was David Twedall ?-1720.

The family were spread around Stapleton, Bewcastle, Kirkandrews-on-Esk (my territory!) - have a look for the local church on the net website as there are some nice pictures. There are still many Tweddles in that area of England/Scotland but not a huge number in other areas to my knowledge.

Good luck!

Amanda.

David Tweddle

I am searching for the parents of David Tweddle, born 23 Feb 1829 in Long Ridge, Cumberland Co, England; died 09 Jun 1903 in Empire Twp,Leelanau Co, MI. He was the son of John Tweddle on the marriage record. He married Mary Ann Bell on 09 May 1857 in Apartia Parish, Cumberland Co, Eng. She was born 25 Nov 1837 in England, and died 08 Jan 1911 in Empire Twp, Leelanau Co MI. She was the daughter of George Bell and Elenore Rhea.
In an article published around 1900 David states that he was born in Long Ridge, Cumberland Co, England. His residence when he married was Aspatria Parish, Cumberland Co, Eng. They sailed for NY on the Bridgewater 9 May 1857 arriving 28 days later. Their Marriage was witnessed by John and Ann Graham. I believe that he was related to the Graham's. A William Tweddel married Isabel Graham and had at least two children William born 1796 and John born 1801. David's children were: Anne(mother's name?) Eleanor, his mother in laws name; John, his fathers name; George, his father-in-law name; William and Robert ??

Tweedle - Have you heard this story?

I am researching a Tweedel family. James Tweedel ( may have originally been spelled another way) was supposedly married to Lucy Bailey. They are said to have had a son and two daughters. Said that Lucy died and James came to Louisiana with an indian woman and the children. Know of the son Thomas (my ancestor thought to be born 1852) and one daughter both given up for adoption in 1861 when James died in 1861in New Orleans. It is said that Thomas said that he was Irish.
