email me at preshayes@aol.com and I will send you what I have on Mary Ann Nelson and her husband Aaron Johnson Tweed. My mother, who is now 90, remembers Mary Ann and the hard times that followed the death of her husband Aaron. Mary Ann tried to eke out a living for herself and her two youngest children, but according to my grandfather, the family was near starvation when he brought Mary Ann to his own home and saw to it that the then-young children Fred and Roxie could live with their siblings in their homes. Both Mary Ann and Aaron are buried at Stranger Cemetery in Greene County, Tennessee, just a few miles from where they were born in Madison County, North Carolina. Vicky knows much more about the father of Mary Ann Nelson.

There is a River Tweed in Leicestershire, in central England, described by Wikipedia as "a short tributary of the River Sence."

This supports the hypothesis that the origin of the river's name is not Gaelic, but more likely Brythonic.

Concerning the River Sence, "antiquarian accounts of the Battle of Bosworth (22 August 1485) label the brook upstream of Shenton “Tweed”".

These rivers are in the River Trent's catchment. "The name 'Trent' comes from a Celtic [i.e. Brythonic] word possibly meaning 'strongly flooding'. More specifically, the name may be a contraction of two Celtic words, tros ('over') and hynt ('way'). This may indeed indicate a river that is prone to flooding. However, a more likely explanation [of this choice of name] may be that it was considered to be a river that could be crossed principally by means of fords, i.e. the river flowed over major road routes."

There was a Romano-British

Geoffrey

Stephen I, Lord of Richmond and Count of Treguier in Brittany, who was buried at St Mary's Church in York in 1136, deserves to be better known than he is. Not only is he an ancestor of the current British Royal family, all of his children are, as are most of his grandchildren. Stephen is also an ancestor of Princess Diana Spencer and Winston Churchill. Other descendants include George Washington and Barak Obama, and many other people famous or obscure, so perhaps descending from him is not so special any more!
To be thoroughly unreliable as I don't have my sources for the next assertion handy, some genealogists with mathematical inclinations claim that if a person has any living descendants at all after 700 years (20 generations), then they are probably very numerous indeed! This neatly explains why Charlemagne crops up in every deeply researched European family tree, including Stephen of Treguier's.
On a side note, Malcolm III (the Malcolm in Shakespeare's "Macbeth") was a friend of Stephen's family, particularly of his elder brother Alan Rufus, the first Lord of Richmond. Malcolm III and his father King Duncan belonged to the Scottish House of Dunkeld, which was most proud of its descent from a cadet line of the Dairine, an important clan in ancient Ireland, known to Claudius Ptolemy the Geographer as the Darini. The House of Dunkeld is another ancestral line of the current British royal family, and surely have very many living descendants.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn recently that the patrilineal line of the anciently most powerful house among the Dairine has my surname, Driscoll. The Internet Surname Database states that "the O'Driscolls were a great sea-faring clan in West Cork"; indeed, my grandfather John Bartlett Driscoll-Tobin and his father (Daniel Driscoll), stepfather (John Tobin) and grandfather (Dennis Driscoll, born in Ireland c1803) were shipwrights and mariners in Poplar (i.e. the London Docks), Tyneside and Australia.
The Tweeds on the other hand were, for most of their history, owners of inland properties. Both the Tweeds and the Driscolls were great castle-builders.

That there are long lines of unconnected Tweeds is perhaps not surprising, if the origin of the name is many thousands of years old as I hypothesise. Even if all Tweeds in Britain are descended from one family of returned Bretons, the common ancestor may go back to 1200 or even 1100.

Contrary to general statements about surnames in Britain originating in the 1200s for taxation purposes, some family names long precede the "Norman Conquest". Chapman is an English example which has been recorded as early as AD 500.

Clif, have I already mentioned that both black and reddish (in my Aunt Audrey's case, auburn) hair occur among siblings in the Tweed line?

This was also true of the Breton royal family: most famously, Alan the Red was elder brother to his heir Alan the Black.

Some genealogies claim a shared ancestry between Tweeds and Tweedies, who in the 1891 census were pretty nearly mutually exclusively located. So one doesn't find many "Tweeds" in the Tweed valley, but the Tweedies owned half the castles in the Border country, including Drummelzier which they inherited by marriage from the Frasers, and Oliver castle.

That the Tweedies were important is shown by their marital connections with the Douglas and Stewart clans. The famous Black Agnes was married to a Tweedie. James V didn't have much sway over the Tweedies but he did attend a Tweedie wedding, uninvited.

According to surviving records, the Tweedies had a very combative history: they had feuds with several of the neighbouring lords, which were sometimes resolved by marriages, but more smouldered for centuries. For most of their history they seemed almost untouchable: the highest courts sometimes sentenced a Tweedie to exile for killing a fellow lord and they'd typically ignore the verdict with impunity.

Other clans in the Borders were as aggressive as the Tweedies, but the Tweedies were generally more powerful and consequently did as they wished, including taxing travellers, until centralised governments became very strong and imposed their own order on the Borders. Subsequently the Drummelzier Tweedies got into financial difficulties and lost their most important properties to creditors.

It's said that the Tweedies were not particularly concerned with religious matters, and this is borne out by their otherwise confusing succession of alliances. For instance they fought in the Parliamentary Army of Oliver Cromwell, but they also fought on the side of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Re: Tweed Family

Perhaps I should describe one lead for the origin of the surname Tweed. Since the family has long been spread almost equally across several counties from Glasgow to Middlesex, that's the first hint that the surname is not a toponym. Their distribution coincides with the principal counties of residence in Britain of a Breton military leader, Count Alan Rufus (who among many other things, built Richmond Castle), and of his eventual heir Stephen of Treguier whose descendants include the later Dukes of Britanny.

Some genealogies do indeed trace the Tweeds to the Breton royal family, some of whose ancestors were prominent British families in Powys, Gwynned, Cornwall and Devon during the Roman occupation: indeed, in the 300's they were in the Roman army as elite cavalry troops.

The nearest Welsh name to Tweed is Twydr (Theodore), the root of which may be the extremely ancient word (in German, Gothic and Saxon, "Theod") meaning "(our) people" or "(our) family" or "(our) kin": this has been traced back to before the separation of the Indo-European languages (so it's at least 5000 years old), and shares an irregular singular form "Den" meaning "man" or "human" or "husband" that has shared origins with the corresponding word in Basque and in Hebrew (it's the word "Adam").

Names associated with the first millenium history of the Bretons include the Gothic kings Theodoric I and II, the Bavarian king Theoden I, and the Spanish-Roman Count Theodosius; this is rather suggestive, as they were all well-known in their time and were well connected by major events during the 3rd to 5th centuries.

I notice that most of the Tweed family members listed owned businesses or had trades or professions; two were surgeons. (Is this a biased sample?) Quite a few did very well, leaving estates in the thousands of pounds: that would have bought a nice portfolio of good houses back then.

I'm descended from a branch of the Cheveley, Cambridgeshire, Tweeds who migrated to Queensland; they were not especially wealthy, but owned land and cattle, and were (obsessively?) orderly: for example, a newspaper, once a person read it, must always be restored to its original neat state.

My Tweeds of Suffolk (rich) and the Cheveley Tweeds (poor) do not seem to meet. My earliest Nicholas Abt 1490 died is Essex, there are Twidd of Essex in the Visitations whose ancestry can be traced back as Twidd of Dumfries' = about 1200 or so. Thus far no proven link has been found.
To my knowledge there are 2 uncliamed bunches of Tweeds on the IGI. The first from around Quorden, Essex, I think these might prove to be Cheveley Tweeds. The second from around the Bradfied Combust, Bradfied St George area of Suffolk, I think just might be connected to my Suffolk rich bunch. Sadly poor or rich I have not found a penny to claim thus far !!.
Always wondered where the 'reddish ' hair some rellies have came from ¬

- Clif

Regarding connections between Tweeds: at times they jumped across country long distances, e.g. between Scotland and SE England, so tracing a common ancestor may take one back many centuries.
According to one genealogy, the Tweeds are related to the Bretons who came over with William the Conqueror, including Alan Rufus, first Lord of Richmond in Yorkshire, a very wealthy man indeed, who also had extensive estates in London, Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and counties around Lanarkshire. Those are exactly the areas where the surname Tweed is principally found in the 1891 English and Scottish censuses, which is a statistically unlikely accident, so a link is plausible.
My maternal grandmother, Ellen May Tweed, is descended from those of the Cheveley Tweeds who migrated to Queensland, Australia. They owned a cattle station, and intermarried with other local property owners.
Some of the English names in the recent part of "my" Tweed family tree include Blackwell, Lofts, Hockley, Ratcliff, Stickwood, Paves, Deare and Poulter, all of whom were also from near Duxford in Cambridgeshire. The Loft(e)s, for example, have been in Cambridgeshire at least since John Loftes was born in Great Abington since 1576; he is said to have been a son of a Mr Loftes who married Catherine Loftus, daughter of Adam Loftus (1533-1605), Lord Chancellor of Ireland.
There may have been some kind of continuing association with the famous Hart family (they of the 1300s manor house), as they crop up twice in the Tweed family tree, once in connection with the Douglas, and again in the early modern era as step-relatives.
The name Tweed may have a common origin with Welsh Twydr and Gothic Theodoric, which mean Theodore ("King of our People"). The word "Twyd" or "Theod" or "Tud" is of very ancient origin (coming from before a time when the Indo-European languages became distinct) and means "people" or "kin".

Most include the names, dates and place you have mentioned.

I'm following some leads on the origins of the Tweeds, that suggest they came over with William the Conqueror, from Brittany. (It's even conceivable that the river in Britain might have been named after them.)

I am looking for her grandmother, Julia Ann Shelton Nelson . The only thing I have is that she was born about 1823 in either N.C. or Va. I have been researching any Sheltons that might have lived in the Rowan,Lincoln Co. area.I am trying to compare the Shelton names with other names that are matches of surnames of my dna testing. Do you know anyone who might have Julia's parents names or where John and Julia may have lived? I have not found any kind of records to prove where or when they lived or died or when they married. I also do not know if they had any other children besides Mary's father William Columbus Nelson. If any thing on the Sheltons or Nelsons from William on back is available I would greatly appreciate it. I do have John Nelson's parents and siblings.

I tried to find proof relating to the Tweed connected to Oliver Cromwell and could not be sure that the information provided by another person was accurate. So I felt reluctant to pass on information that I wasn't sure about. Sorry for not getting back to you. Did you see the naval information on one of the Robert Bartons'. If not I'll send it to you.
Janet

Hi James - You have to be more specific - we need names and dates. Where did they end up in the United States? I have a lot of Tweeds in my database, plus you have to check Stephen Morse Passenger Lists (gold) for Boston, New York, Philadephia & Baltimore ports. Most of what I have gathered has been Massachusetts & Rhode Island.

Floy Viola (Tweed) Carpenter Byram

I am trying to find out more about Floy and what happened to her husbands, a man with the surname of Carpenter and her second husband, Elmer Wesley Byram.

She was born in 1885 in Wisconsin, died 09 July 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her death is recorded in Minnesota as "married" so that tells me that Elmer died after 1933.

Noted in her death record is father Zopher Tweed and mother Mary Hopkins.

Any help is appreciated. I've been trying to find more about them for almost two years now.

Thanks!
