Twells - Castle Donington

My Gt Grandfather was Joseph Twells born in Castle Donington (I believe) around 1871 and married Rosina Lane.

His father was Christopher Thomas Twells also born in Castle Donington (a convicted Cattle Stealer) he ended up in Birmingham and lived out his days as a bootmaker living with his two sons.

There seems to be a lot of Twells' living in and around CD (i.e Hemington, Shardlow) at some point they 'must' be related, just that I don't know how yet.

I think Joseph was killed in WW1 (at least a Joseph Twells from Leicestershire was) and until I get down to TNA in Kew, I am wondering if anyone out there has details of this line and how they connect to other Twells.

In particular Sarah Gearman (Christopher Twells wife). I found a census record of Sarah living with another family about the time her husband was locked up, and detailed as 'sister-in-law'. I would be interested to learn more about the Gearman's too if anone has knowledge

Many thanks
Paul

My great grandfather was George Twell, born in 1887 in Lincoln, England and died in 1940. He married a Katherine Bird in 1919. On the marriage cerificate its states he was a waggoner (ex army), to date i have not been able to find his army records. What i am looking for, is that he does not appear on the 1911 census, from what i can see. Does anyone have any clues as to his whereabouts or any hints at why he would not appear on the census

I believe that the term 'in law' was used in different circumstances to that used today and to support this theory, I have seen 'brother in law' used when referring to step brother for example. I think that Mr Thorpe could possibly be the brides step father. FreeBMD is updated monthly and there are still gaps.
Regards
Jackie

Researching Twells from Loughborough and Leicester...still looking for a link to other lines pre 1785.

Twells in Heckington Lincolnshire

Hello,

I have reached a dead end with a branch of my family where the Twells are involved. I have a copy of a page of a Lincolnshire newspaper which I have dated to 1845 and it mentions the following marriage in Heckington ' Miss Sarah Porter was made Mrs Twells, after which the loving couple with their friends, retired to the house of Mr Thorpe, father in law of the bride'. I cannot find this marriage on FreeBMD, in local records, etc, but their is a Sarah Twells who died many years later, whose age fits. Also how can a Mr Thorpe be the father in law? Any answers greatfully received.

Nigel

Very interesting website, thanks for the information. I am struggling to research my ancestors any further back from John Twells in Loughborough but am hoping to link them into those families further away eventually.

TWELLS surname from Leicester and Loughborough, England

I have traced my TWELLS ancestors back to John and Elizabeth who married at Loughborough on 3 January 1809. The family moved to Leicester after 1851 and I have linked to my tree, most of those in the 19th century census's who lived in Leicester. If you have any Leicester or Loughborough TWELLS' in your family history, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Hello,
My 3rd great grandmother, Frances Hicks, married a man by the name of Thomas Twells in 1845 St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. I recently received a photo of him. On the back it said Castle Covington, Leicester Shire, England. He was born about 1803 and died 12 July 1876. I have no idea when he imagrated to Canada. If anyone knows more about him I would love to hear from them.

My grandfather was Thomas Twells born 1891 in Newark, Notts. The only information I have is that his father was a George Twells who possibly married a Hannah from Mabelthorpe. He had an older brother Edward and a younger sister Ellen. Apart from the fact that it is not a common name the names George, Edward and Thomas also occur in your list. I imagine there is a not too distant connection.

Thomas Bott Twells turned out to be connected to me which was very exciting. I have amassed a quite large Twells tree but except for Harry, who posted the first message, I have not traced any away from Leicester. My earliest ancestor (so far) was John who was born 1785 in Loughborough and died there. He had many children, some moved to Leicester (city) and this included John born 1816 , my 3 x gt grandfather. There are many descendants that I have not yet traced forwards so one of these may I have moved to Coventry but I have no information on this.

I do not know if I am any relation to Henry Twells Bott. I am the grandaughter of Henriette and Henry Twells of Coventry. I know very little about my grandparents except that my grandfather died in approx 1926 of sleeping sickness leaving a widow and four sons Albert, Henry(Harry) Leonard and Alfred (my father) who is still alive. If this is any relation I would love to know more.

I believe that your Henry Twells born 1860 who married Clara Bott is the son of John Twells who married Sarah. This John who I think was born about 1816 is my direct ancestor. Clay tobacco pipe making appears as an occupation in many decendants.
