There have been Underwoods in Kentucky since 1780. Several had large families. If you have some dates it would help to match things up. Walter Underwood

James William Underwood, Minnie Ann Underwood, Alabama

I am trying to find more information on my ggg grandfather James William Underwood. His daughter Minnie Ann Underwood was born in Steele's Depot, Alabama in 1872 and I have found quite a bit of information on her, but cannot seem to find much on her father. Minnie married William Mathew Smith in Alabama. Her father James Underwood was married to a Drucilla Thompson (Minnie's mother)and then later married again after Drucilla's death.

Minnie had several brothers and sisters that I have not been able to trace. Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to look at my tree to see what I have found.

Hello Mrs. Murphy!
Thank you so much for your information! It sounds like your parents were referring to the Thompson plantation that was right next to the Underwood and Shelton plantations. Reuben's wife was Sarah Ann Thompson, and her father Ned, was directly owned by Annet Underwood, Louisa's husband then upon his passing, was purchased by the Thompson's across the way. Do you happento know if Thomas was named for his grandfather Thomas Shelton, by any chance?

Charles Otto Underwood of Roaring Springs Texas, was my great-great-grandfather. He died before I was born, but I remember my great-great-grandmother. She was a beautiful woman. She outlived her oldest child my great-grandmother. That was the last lucid moment I remember of her. She died at the age of 1993 at the age of 93. Her and Otto are burried in Roaring Springs, TX They had 13 children together. Otto was a Corporal in Arkansas National Guard. He was in Battery A of the 142nd Field Artillery Regiment Stationed in Springdale Arkansas. He was one of one hundred and forty one men that were mobilized to Federal service on August 5, 1917. After a brief amount of training at camp Beauregard in Louisiana, he was shipped off to France to fight measles, influenza, and the German army. He made it back to see his daughter for the first time around April 12, 1919. A picture of him and my great grandmother are on my flickr account courtesy of Betty Jo... http://www.flickr.com/photos/tcdchameleon/6291916340/ I have several photos of their grave in Roaring Springs,Texas. http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=50374300@N00&q=Underwood And the trips to AR. Well her momma and Daddy are burried there. Hope this helps.

Somehow I came into possession of family memorabilia and genealogy research on the Underwood family. I believe it is related to descendants of Harlan and Inez Halladay Underwood from the Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY area. I would like to get this material into the hands of the right family. I haven't looked too closely through it, and I believe it includes information way beyond this family. There are pictures, drafts of genealogy research, newspaper clippings, a book by William L. Underwood. Anyone interested, email me at halladay1@aol.com.

Through Ancestry I found a family tree showing A Emmitt Underwood with his wife but no records attached.

Death Certificate - Lived at 3418 Hawthorne, Dallas, TX. Alocious Emmett Underwood, a retired farmer, was born 31 Aug 1869 in Murray, KY. Died 27 April 1947 in Dallas, TX from Prostate Cancer. Father was Joel Underwood of KY and mother was Ester Jamison of KY. Decedant was married to a different wife so either this isn't the correct person or he had a second wife. Informant was G.(?) P. Underwood. Burial is to be in Myra, TX and use Ed C. Smith & Bros Mortuary, Ltd. of Dallas.

1920 Census Emmett Underwood 19 lived in Hood County, Texas with his father, mother, grandmother, and siblings + boarders. Cole Underwood lived next door (probably another sibling).

If Alocious is the correct person you might search under that name as well.

This apprently is a different Underwood family from mine. I don't have any of these names in my family.

1930 Vann, Muskogee, Oklahoma Census for Emmett Underwood, mother Nannie, half brother Charles, step brother David Hargis, and grandfather James Kemp.

This will get you started.
Kate Montgomery - Spring Hill, TN - b: 22 MAR 1897 NC

(Montgomery, Underhill, Reed/Reid, Hickman,Ferguson, McPherson)-Kate Montgomery - Spring Hill, TN - b: 22 MAR 1897 NC

I am searching for my Grandmother Kate Montgomery (Katherine Helen Montgomery) b: 22 MAR 1897 in North Carolina, raised and married around Spring City Tennessee. After her children were born they all moved to Pinellas County Florida and this when she died.

I believe her father was was Allen John Montgomery
b: 28 FEB 1794 (NC), d: 26 May 1879 (NC).
I do not know her mother's name, but I believe she died young, as Allen John married Rose Ella REED in 1900.

In the 1880 (Census) Allen John Montgomery was 18 years old and lived with his mother, sister and brother in NC on a farm.

In the 1900 (Census) Allen John Montgomery lived in Roane TN with his wife Rose E. ("married 0 years), Kate Montgomery age 3, and a boarder named John H Reed (I think a relative.)

In the 1910 Census - Kate did not reside in Ducktown, TN with John Allen Montgomery (age 42) - with him at this time were his wife "Ella"(age 34) and their 3 children, Elyer(age 6), Maggie (age 5) and Rubie (age2).

In 1910, Kate (age 13) showed up with her grandfather Robert H Reed (age 59) and his wife Rose Ella "Lue" Reed (Age 52 or 59) in Rhea Co, TN. Also living at this residence Lulu Reed Dodson (age 19), Earl Dodson (age 0 [2/12]), Buryl (Beryl Hickman (age 13) and her brother John Hickman (age 12).

In 1920, Kate (age 23) was maried to Jack Donavan Coston (age 24) and is listed as Katherine M. Coston (age 22)- they had a son Joe Donavan Coston and a daughter Mary Lou ( age ~ 6mo). My mother Dorothy Elzabeth was yet to be born.

Elsewhere on the message board a fellow posted that my grandmother had been listed in his family bible as Katie Underwood. I do not have this info and have tried to connect to him. I do know that the name Underwood was one that she mentioned from time to time. I also know that Beryl Hickam (later married name was Ferguson) was my grandmother's cousin in Spring Hill TN. Spring Hill, COpper Hill and Ducktown were mentioned. I have a photo of Grandma Kate standing in front of a sign that says "Grandville School."

I would welcome any info or leads! Thanks so much!
Cathy Wiggins

The Underwood name is still a bit confusing to my family.
Lora Simmerine Russell married A.E. Underwood and lived in Cooke County Texas. I do believe some of the children lived in Ok. There is a photo with my grandfather with "Johnnie Underwood". Probably 1928, which would have made Johnnie born about 1918-1922ish. Lora S. Underwood would have been my great great great grandmother.

Kate Montgomery was my grandmother - From my research I believe she is the daughter of Rose Ella (Eller) Reed (later Montgomery). In the 1900 census Kate, age 3, is listed as her child with new husband (married for 0 years), Montgomery. In the 1910 census she is listed as the g-daughter of Reed. In this census she is listed with her cousin Beryl Hickman, both age 13 (whom I met in the 1970's on a trip with my grandma Kate).

Kate them marries Jack Coston of Rockwood, TN and moves to FL. I have not been able to trace the Coston line at all.

I hope we can exchange info!

Agnes Underwood was my grandfather's, Robert Underwood, sister. I did not know her but found out about her through Ancestry. She was born Feb. 7,1889 in Phila to Robert Underwood and Margaret (Orr). They were born in Ireland and came to the US in 1880. She married James Walsh July 6, 1910 in Philadelphia ( I found their marriage certificate in the Phila Archives) and had 3 children with him. (James, Agnes and Margaret)I know she later married Mr. Heinecke but knew nothing else. I found her great, great granddaughter on Ancestry, Jamie Sisson, whose mother is the daughter of James Walsh, Agnes' son. My maiden name is Underwood and my father, John, did not know anything of the Underwoods. It is wonderful for me now to make these connections. I would love to know more of the Heinecke and perhaps where Agnes is buried.

He was born in Missouri in about 1868, which would have made him 52 years old when he lived in La Grande, Union County, Oregon in the 1920's. I do know that his parents were both from Tennessee, evidently leaving there and going to Missouri.

Any help would be appreciated, trying to help a friend trace her Underwood family.

All this is good stuff. I have been researching Underwoods off and on since I was 13 years old. My grandfather, Samuel Wesley Underwood, born 1867, son of Thomas Wesley Underwood and Julia Frances Hollingsworth of Greene and Pickens Counties Ala, lived with us for several years until his death in 1960. He talked a lot about both his and my grandmother's families, and I asked questions. I should have asked more, but I was only 13. What I learned from him provided many clues for more research when I finally was adult enough to follow up on them. I have spent many, many hours in Greene County AL courthouse, Pickens and Union Co SC courthouses, and Fauquier Co VA courthouse as well as all three state archives. I have read all these messages with great interest, and have been happy to see that the errors in some messages have been corrected in others. The story that I read on another site and that was mentioned here that I found most interesting, was the one about Reuben's wife from another plantation. That is a story that has been passed down in my family also. My grandfather, who would have known Reuben and probably all the other slaves well, told us that one of the slaves had a wife who lived on an adjoining plantation. His grandparents would give the slave a pass regularly so that he could visit her. If he told us the slave's name, I have forgotten it, so I was happy to learn that it was Reuben. I have followed him through the census records. I would be happy to hear from any of you (Deloris, we have corresponded before, and I see that you have made great progress.) My private email is jmurphy2@knology.net.
Vicki Underwood Murphy

Mary Underwood

I am looking for a Mary Underwood who married Albert (Unknown) 1872 or before in England. She would have been born between 1840-1855. They had a son Frank or Francis born Jan. 1873. Frank changed his last name to Lawrence when he moved to the states due to a disagreement with Albert and whomever Albert's father was. According to my uncle, this family was wealthy.

I know I'm very vague here, but that's all I have. I've been searching everything I can think of. I am hoping someone on this board has Mary on their family tree and can assist.

Thank you!!

Re: William UNDERWOOD

William Davis Underwood
The following is the history of William Davis Underwood as recorded by Betsy McCann.

William Davis Underwood married Bethsaida Louisa Phelps in 1841 in Alabama. His father gave them some slaves-a negro man and his wife and children-which he kept until the negroes were freed. However, when William Davis and his family moved to Texas he tried to set his slaves free before he left Mississippi. His slaves cried so hard and begged continually to go with them saying “if you leave us we will be captured and sold away from each other and our family will be no more”. Then they cried so pitifully until they could not refuse them but told them he might have to set them free in Texas for he had heard that Texas frowned on slavery. The slaves thought they would be safer free in Texas than in Mississippi.
Soon after William Davis Underwood and Bethsaida Phelps were married they moved to Mississippi with her parents, the Spruill Phelps and family. The Lawler family moved to Mississippi too. They all engaged in cotton farming until the year 1858 when they decided to go to Texas.
While living in Mississippi eight of William Davis and Bethsaida Louisa Phelps the Underwood’s children were born:

In 1858, William Davis Underwood, his wife and family moved to Texas settling in Jasper County. They had chills and fever so badly while living here they began moving west. By September 15, 1860 they had reached the Cannon Ball Ferry across the Trinity River in Trinity County but had to camp here for Levi Bean Underwood was born. That remained here two months and continued their journey to Prairie Dell, Bell County, Texas where they lived in the Bonner House. Thence they moved to Cedar Valley, Bell County to live. Levi Bean was four years old when they moved to Stillman Valley near Youngsport, Texas to live----settling on the Samuel F. Brown survey. (Many, many years later ’1920” we knew it as the’ W M McDonald home’) (Bessie McCann) Present owner’ Clyde Ford-1979.
Our research indicates a somewhat different journey of William Underwood to Texas. The following is what we believe happened and where the family went in the journey to Texas.

William Davis Underwood, the next in line in our geological tree, was somewhat a man of mystery in his younger life. We know that he was born in Illinois on December 7th 1820. The next reference we can find of him is his marriage to Bethsaida Lorren Phelps on the 18 Apr 1841 in Newton County Mississippi.
Bethsaida Lorren Phelps was the daughter of Enoch Spruill Phelps and Cornelia Johnson. She was born 23 Nov 1826 in Walkers Beat, Dallas, Alabama. She was the oldest of twelve children. The Phelps family moved to Lowndes County Alabama in the early 1830’s and continued their migration west in the late 1830’s (probably 1839) to Newton County Mississippi.
William was twenty-one when he married Bethsaida. She would have been fifteen years old at the time of their marriage. Our conclusion is that the Underwood and the Phelps families were either neighbors or friends in Newton Mississippi and in Alabama and further solidifies our position on the location of John Underwood. We also believe that the Lawler family, the father that went with John to Texas in the 1830’s and the son that went with William Davis later on to Texas lived in the areas during this time.

Newton Miss 1840 Lowndes Ala 1830 Dallas Ala 1825
William and Bethsaida’s first child, Mary, was born in Newton Mississippi 15 Sep 1842. Contrary to the records of previous research, John Henry Underwood was born in Many Sabine Pass Louisiana in 1843.

Many is situated in the heart of what was the Neutral Strip. Louisiana was owned by France, Spain, then France again and at last purchased by the United States when Thomas Jefferson was president. But there was a strip of land that was not defined in the sale that both the United States and Mexico claimed. Here was the land of no law and many renegades and outlaws came to escape the law.
A group of Belgians first settled the present site of Many in 1837. Six years later the town actually was founded. In 1843 Sabine Parish (we have Parishes instead of Counties in Louisiana, and our law is based upon the old Code of Napoleon instead of the Common Law of England) was created out of Natchitoches Parish, which was settled in 1717 by the French. Baldwin's Store was selected as the site for Many, and the town was named for Col. Many who was then commander of nearby Fort Jesup. Baldwin's Store was selected as it was a crossroads of the old El Camino Real (the Spanish King's Highway, built by the early Spanish settlers and which ran to Mexico) and several crossroads that ran north and south. At Baldwin's Store, Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett stopped to water their horses and "have a drink" before going to Fort Jesup and on to t he Alamo and Texas.

Many Sabine Pass La 1843-1850
The trek westward towards Texas continued in 1843 after their first child was born. There are no records to indicate that the Underwood’s, Spruill’s, or Lawler’s received land grants or bought land when they moved to Many Louisiana; however, the historical and land records available from the state of Louisiana are extremely sketchy.
What we do know is that William Davis lived in this area until approximately 1850 when his family and his wife’s parents and their family moved to Newton Texas. This time frame is corroborated by the birth year of Jeremiah Spruill Underwood being born in Many Sabine Pass Louisiana in 1849 and James Edward Underwood being born Newton Texas in 1852.

Newton County Texas Newton County Courthouse
1852-1859

Newton County was a supply and military center in the Civil War. It was a target area for Federals trying to move up the Sabine or across Louisiana and take Texas. Confederates built breastworks and maintained arsenal at Burkeville.
Major supply route, "The old beef trail", begun 1823 through area later known as Newton County, was road taken by thousands of cattle being sent from Texas to feed armies and civilians as far eastward as Mobile, AL. Sabine ferries were equipped with cattle pens. Also, ferrymen kept oxen trained to lead herds swimming across the river. Some local beef went eastward, too.
Farrsville, a town founded about 1850 on Cow Creek, had a military campground and corrals furnishing fresh stagecoach teams. Its tanning vats and shops made boots and shoes for the Confederacy. Its water mills ground corn for bread, sawed lumber, ginned cotton; all products used in supplying the South.
The Commissioners' Court made appropriations to outfit military units such as buying horses for men unable to furnish their own, aid dependent families, and supply the people with cotton cards to turn the lint into batts for spinning, weaving, and knitting.
The county, which had voted 178 to 3 for secession, sent about 400 soldiers to the Confederate army.

Land records indicate that both William and his father in law, Enoch Phelps received land grants in 1858 in the district of Jasper in Newton County Texas. The records indicate that Enoch Phelps received a land grant of 308 acres on 14 Jan 1858 whereas William Underwood received a grant of 320 acres on the 2nd of December 1858.
While living in Newton County Texas, William and Bethsaida had the following children: James Edward Underwood, born April 20th 1852, Baby Underwood born in 1853 and died an infant, Enoch Robert Underwood born October 10 1855, and Dorcas Martha Underwood born March 3rd 1857.

It is important to note that their oldest child, Mary A Underwood met and married Pleasant West in Newton Texas on 24 Sep 1857. Pleasant was born in Newton Texas in 1836.
There must have been a reason for them to continue to move as they had just received their land grants. Therefore, it is logical that they moved because of health concerns. There must have been some type of epidemic as they had lived here since approximately 1852.

Trinity County Texas Bell County Texas Williamson County
1860 late 1860-1864 1864-1867

In the summer of 1860 the families began moving west again. By September 15 they had reached the Trinity River when Levi Bean Underwood was born. They stayed in this location until the mother and child were able to travel. The families then continued their journey to Prairie Dell Texas. In approximately 1864, the family moved to Stillman Valley near Youngsport, Texas. Louisa Bethsaida Underwood, the youngest child of William Davis and Bethsaida Underwood, was born in Stillman Valley on 29 Jan 1866.

The Civil War is disrupted the lives of millions of people both in the North and the South. The Underwood family supported the Confederate States of America and William Davis and his son in law both fought in the war. The following is another excerpt from Betsy McCann’s family story

William Davis Underwood and is son-in-law “Pleasant West” entered the Civil War in 1862 to fight in the “Confederate Army” in Mississippi. During the conflict, William Davis Underwood became very sick with “dropsy”. Late in the year of 1864, his son-in-law, “Ples West”, put him upon an old poor horse which a confederate woman gave him to take his father in law home. The “Northern Army” was coming and they would not leave him in a deserted house to die alone. “Ples West” walked and held him (wrapped in an old horse hair blanket) upon the old horse. They slept upon the ground by campfire at night while the old horse grazed and rested. Finally, Ples got him to his home in Stillman Valley, Texas. Then the old horse died within a few days.

“Ples West” rested a few days and returned to fight in the Civil War, Confederate side in Mississippi. As he walked away, his two little daughters, Sena and Signe, and his little four year old brother in law, Levi Underwood, walked about a quarter of a mile with him. He stopped and picked up all three together in his arms and hugged and kissed them and cried. He told them “run back to the house, I must go fight the Yankees.” He was never heard of again.

Our research indicates that William Davis Underwood and Pleasant West both entered the Texas Calvary of the Confederate Army. The 30th Texas Calvary division would include the soldiers living in Bell County whereas the 29th Calvary division would include those living in Williamson County.
Florence is in Williamson County, but it is on the very edge of Bell County, so this would explain why they were in two separate units.

Our research indicates that the 29th and 30th Calvary divisions of the Texas confederate forces were assigned to the Army of the West, Trans-Mississippi Dept from December 1862 until January 1863, and the District of Arkansas, Trans-Mississippi Dept from January-October 1863. Battles that they engaged in probably were the Battle at Fort Gibson (Cabin Creek) on May 20, 1863 and battle near Honey Springs on July 17, 1863. Both of these battles were in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. In all probability, the Calvary was then moved to help in the campaigns in the Deep South states of Alabama and Mississippi.

This is within the timeframe that William Davis Underwood became ill and was brought back to his home by his son in law, Pleasant West.

Our research concludes that Pleasant West was captured by the Union Forces, probably in 1865, placed in a prisoner of war camp, and probably died while in the camp from unknown causes.

William Davis Underwood lived for nearly three years before he passed away. His wife, Bethsaida, cared for him in this time frame. Family folklore indicates that she had worked as an intern with a doctor in Mississippi and was considered a medical doctor of her time. If William Davis had ‘dropsy’, which is known in today’s medical terms as edema, it probably affected his heart and or lungs and contributed to his death in this short time. William Davis died March 10, 1867. He was buried in the Florence Cemetery, Florence, Texas.

Bethsaida Underwood worked the rest of her life rearing her children against somewhat difficult obstacles. After William Davis died, she continued to practice medicine and farm to provide for her children. Weather conditions forced her to move the family in 1869. She moved to be near her parents in Jasper County Texas, but floods in an area forced her to move back to Stillman Valley. Bethsaida married F C Wilmeth 27 Oct 1870 in Bell County Texas. He was born 03 Feb 1825 in Walkers Beat Alabama. They lived in Bell County until their death 08 Nov 1901. (Records indicate that both died the same day)

William Davis and Bethsaida Underwood were the parents and the first large family in our family tree. There were ten children born to them and each of them that lived to adulthood continued to expand the tree in large numbers.

It is apparent that if one viewed all of the children, the project would be beyond comprehension; therefore, we shall examine only the pertinent individuals of this family, i.e. James Edward Underwood, our paternal great grandfather.

James Edward Underwood was a prolific individual. He fathered 21 children. Our particular group came from his first marriage to Amanda Wells.
