Hello Julie
My sister Susan Davis (nee Unwin) came across your message when looking around on the internet. I realise your message was posted many years ago now, but Susan and I are interested in tracing our own Unwin forebears.

We were born in New Zealand in 1954 and 1956, respectively; our father was ALFRED GEORGE Unwin (b. London 24 September 1924) and our grandfather was ALFRED WILLIAM CHARLES Unwin who was married to ROSINA ALICE Smith.

It would be wonderful to know if any of our relatives are related to ours.

Kind regards
Loran Reid (nee Unwin)

Hi
I have traced some Unwins that I'm related to back to Chesterfield. They were living there in the 1840's but the family had moved to Liverpool by the 1850's.
I know that George Unwin was born around 1815/16 and was married to Maria who was born around the same time. I'm having a bit of trouble finding out more about them. But they did give their children some unusual names (Kendall and Cephus). Are they anything to do with your Unwin's of Chesterfield?
Thanks,
Kate

Hi Chris
Thanks for the offer.
Most of the information I have has come from C Michael a distant cousin of mine, I found this out from the family tree he has compiled. You can google his own Web site the information he has covers many Generations of Unwins some from the Malden and Purliegh areas and moves to London, as far as I am aware their are only recent additions to be made. I should have mentioned in my last post that I also had a Great Uncle John Richard Unwin District Officer in the London Fire Brigade awarded MBE in 1941 if we are not related the two Unwins Served at the same time. Let me know if we have a lead.
Best regards Roy.
Hello Roy,
It is possible there is a family connection way back. My earliest known ancestor is Robert Unwin born 1764, but I don't have his place of birth just that he was living in Purleigh, near Maldon with his family. There are no Joseph's amongst his sons, but there is a chance they were brothers or cousins. Your family seem to follow the same tradition ours did in naming children after parents and grandparents, and ours also sought their fortune in London. My grandfatherworked for the fire service during WW2.
Would you consider a dna test, as this would be the easiest way of establishing a connection, or ruling it out. If we matched then it would be worth checking to see if there are any paper records to tie it up.

hi kathryn, I am also an Unwin from Nottingham (Hucknall).I have hit a bit of a brick wall with my Unwins and am trying to work out if the Dronfield ones are related. The only things I am sure of is that my great grandfather was born in Harthill,Yorks in 1879.His mother was Harriett. There is no father on the birth certificate but I believe his name was Pressley as my g-grandfather was named George Pressley Unwin. As far as I can work out Harriett died in Harthill when George was a few months old and he was brought up in Wath on Dearne in Rotherham by the Pressley family. There is a Harriett in the Dronfiled Unwins I believe but I don't know if it is the Harriett I am after.Does any of this sound like your Dronfield Unwins?
Alison

Hi Jill,

I suppose the dna study might help identify your great g grandfathers surname if your father's dna is a close match to any particular surname from the Staffordshire area. Good luck with your research. We are quite a close match to someone (different surname) whose ancestors came from Ayrshire, but our paper trail goes back to the late 1700's in Essex. In our case the dna probably hints at our distant origins, my favourite theory being that the we arrived with one of the Irish/Viking incursions into the area. Pure speculation based on a visit to Maldon and seeing the statue of the Anglo Saxon warrier facing the river estuary.

We won't know until more Unwin men take part in the dna studies whether there is a predominant haplogroup connected to the name. I can say with certainty that my Essex Unwin line originated separately from the Derbyshire Unwin family listed on Y-base as we are different haplogroups. However, there is an old booklet about Unwin families that suggests the Yorkhire/Essex branches are related so maybe more research is needed.

Best wishes.

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your family illness, and hope your children escape any problems. Good luck with your search for relatives.
I was simply interested in using the y-chromosome dna test to see if the different branches of the Unwin family are related. My Unwin line comes from the Maldon (Essex) area, moving to London in the mid 1800's as I think may families did. I traced our direct line back to about 1760, but as far as I know we have no other living male relatives, although there is the possibility that there are connections between different Essex families, which would be revealed through the y-chromosome test. (Only men can take this test and they need to carry the Unwin surname). I have confirmed that we are not related to some of the Unwins from Yorkshire, as we are different haplogroups, but that is as far as it has got. There is a lot of information on the internet about using dna for family history research, and a number of companies offering to test at a price. The Sorenson database offer free tests, provided you accept their criteria, and it can take quite a long time (12 months +) for them to post the results.
My interest in this was sparked by reading the little booklets on the Unwins, which had a lot of detail about different families, but speculated on their origins and whether there were family connections between different geographical areas. It's possible to answer some of these queries with the tools that are available now.

Hello, As an Australian (Herts U.K. born) Unwin, I am having difficulty trying to find my ancestors after 1873. Would you believe I know the linage prior to this date but due to being the black sheep daughter of a black sheep father, my surviving relatives are silent.
My line are the Rivenhall, Essex branch who moved to London in the early 1900s. Is this your connection?
My main reason for asking is that there is a genetic fault in my line called Lipoid Storage Disease (film called "Lorenzos Oil" demonstrates its' effects). My brother Terence Christopher Unwin died at 16 from Lipoid Storage Disease Unwin Variety. Is this the fault shown in the DNA? Neither of my children have the disease (Thank goodness) but they must undergo genetic tests prior to having children (in the next 3-5 years).
That said, my fathers family moved to Beaconsfield and Amersham Bucks from London in 1930s. Anyway, good luck with your search and feel free to contact me if I can help. mrs.rolly@bigpond.com. I live in Melbourne Victoria Australia.
Kind regards
Norah Unwin aka Mrs Annie Norah Unwin-Rollinson born 02.04.60

Looking for Unwin's /Surman's from 1881/1891 Census Reports

We are the Canadian side of the Unwin/Surman family looking for our roots. We have traced roots to the following names on 1881 and 1891 Census Reports as well as birth and marriage certificates:
Ebenezer John Unwin born Jan. 1879 (my grandfather); his sister Jessie Alice Unwin born Spring 1877 or 78, their father Thomas Henry Unwin born 1850, his father Thomas Unwin. Thomas Henry Unwin married Jane Surman in August 1874. Her father was John Surman. Married in Luton; Unwin's born in Essex. 1881 UNWIN Census, Bow/Poplar dist., also showed an Ernest F. Unwin age 5, and Mabel A. Unwin, infant. Showed Jane Unwin (Surman) as a 31 year old widow and Jessie and Ebenezer JOHN living with her. 1891 Census showed Ebenezer JOHN Unwin (my grandfather) living with Jane's parents, John and Mary Surman, and a Emily Davis age 41. Thomas, and Jane and Mable appear to have deceased at this point. Jessie and Ernest are gone somewhere ??? What happened to them is a mystery we would like to solve. We have the Canadian side of the family tree from the time Jessie and John (Ebenzer John) came to Canada, married and started families here. I am the Grandaughter of Ebenezer John Unwin and Elizabeth Priscilla Shrubsall (Unwin) who was also here from England. Jessie Alice Unwin (Jacobs) was my great aunt. Both Ebenezer John and Jessie Alice Unwin lived in our household as my father, Jack Alfred Unwin, was their son and nephew. I have a brother, a sister, 2 daughters and several nieces and nephews that are all Unwin descendants. If anyone is linked or interested feel free to e-mail me or post back under the Unwin catagory.

Edwin T Unwin b. 1860?

I'm searching for information on my great grandfather Edwin Unwin. He was born in Oxfordshire about 1860 and married Esther. In the 1901 census he is living in Berkshire and has seven children: Phyllis, Angus, Hugh Thomas (my grandfather), Shadforth, Gwendoline, Robert, Gerald. Most of the children had the additional forename Haldane. Gwendonline married the actor Leslie Banks, and Shadforth married his sister Dorothy. Although I can find a marriage record for Edwin and Esther (but no surname for her), there is no sign of him in the 1861/71/81/91 censuses. Any help most welcome.

Hello Jim,

We had the results back from Dna Heritage for our Unwin branch, going back to the 1750s in Essex. They were intriguing as they came out as a Scottish/Irish variant of one of the less common haplotypes, and the three Unwin's published on Y-base are from completely different groups. By googling Y-base and typing in the surname in the search facility you can look at the results. In time it would be interesting if other Unwins would be prepared to get tested to see if there are any typical markers for the Unwins as has been found with many surnames.
