Bill's on the road with his main squeeze ;) His site is not operational as he does not have the time just now. Hopefully, he will have it up and running again in the future. In the meantime, give it a visit, to download what items are available.

I will not be mounting an Upper site with downloadable data bases, or links, or anything other than a cursory review to encourage other Upper researchers to contact me for a more indepth study of our past. I will leave that to someone else. It is something that I do not encourage. It is too much work to just scatter it to the wind. I hope you will understand.

Contact me...Kindest regards, Al

Hi,
I was trying to see if I could find anything on the Upper family on the web and I came across your message.
Although the dates and locations are somewhat different I think I may have the information you are looking for.

I believe the O. Upper you are looking for may have been my great grandfather Osborn Upper. He was born in 1870 in Ontario and married a Jane Anne Walker (although my records indicate she was born in 1874 in Joplin, Missouri). They were married in Bemiji, Minnesota in 1892. They had two sons - Oscar Walker Upper born Jun 21, 1912 in Leask, Saskatchewan, Canada & George Osborn Upper born Jan 12, 1917 at Leask, Saskatchewan, Canada.

George was my grandfather.

I hope this may be of some use.
I've posted tombstone pictures of the Upper Family (Private ) Cemetery, Allanburg, Welland Co. Ontario. to my site.

<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clemens/>

(I aplogogize for the poor condition of some of the pictures but I hadn't planned to be cemetery hunting and definitley was not dressed for Ontario's cold Oct! Lots of shivering)

So far I haven't been able to connect my Upper family with any of these families, but my GGGrandmother was Ememline 'Emma' Mosier and there are a couple of Mosiers buried here so I'm hoping to find that connection.

My line so far:
Father: John Walter Upper Clemens b. Nov 18, 1928.

Grandmother: Marcella McGillis Upper b. abt 1905. (I'm waiting for her birth registration papers) She married Walter Clemens.

G.Grandfather: Charles Mosier Upper b. May 2 1873, Thorold Twp. Welland Co. He m. Mary Ann Mc Gillis.

G.G. Grandfather: Joseph Upper. He married Emeline Mosier. In son Charles' birth registration he is listed as a carpenter from Allanburg.

Karen
N.S.

Tim: a long time coming but I have not done anything on the Uppers in a long time.

I am sorry to say that I have not researched any lines off the main Upper surname. That has been tedious enough. I am also involved in about 20 other surname searches up and down the matriarchical and patriarchical lines on both sides of my family. Even though Upper is a direct link it is also fairly easy to do as it is the only Upper in Canada that started out in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada; following the trip out of Northern New Jersey.

Stangely enough, dear George Upper of Allanburg, Ontario has just this past few weeks passed away. He was the direct nephew of Anthony and he still lived in the Old Stone House in Allanburg following his brother's death some years ago. His nephew, Robert, late of Thorold, thankfully bought the house from the estate and now lives there--since Dec. of 2001.

Contact me at b1caez01@cogeco.ca

Hi Al. I am wondering if in your records you have information about a missing fragment of my Wright family of Stamford, Ontario. George Hutt Wright Jnr. married Melissa Jane Upper, daughter of Andrew Upper and Mary Lampman, and had a family of mostly daughters. This family is said to have settled in New York State, and Melissa is thought to have died in Gowanda about 1910. I have checked the Verne Simons notes at the St.Catharines Public Library, but this branch of the Upper family is incomplete. Also, their youngest daughter, Carrie Alberta Wright married a distant cousin, Charles Oscar Upper of Buffalo and is said to have had two or three children. My own information about these Upper families is incomplete, but what information I have I would willingly share with other Upper researchers. Thanks, Tim L. P.S. On another side of my family I am a direct descendent of Elizabeth Upper, daughter of George and Anna of Beaverdams.

Uppers

The Uppers first came into Canada in 1788 and
spread out from the Allanburg, Thorold area.
Any and all Uppers after that time may be from
a different line. There were some that went
south into the States but they are not neces-
sarily connected. It is thought that the name
Upper was derived from Opfer. The Opfers came
out of the Palantine region of Germany in the
mid 1700's and in 1767 came to the Americas.

Along with Robert Upper of Thorold, I am the
only other known repository of Upper info.
available. If there are any others, I would
like to have you contact me. The St. Cath. and
Thorold libraries have data, but it is either
out of date or very incomplete.

As much time, effort and expense has been put
into this data, it would be very helpful if
a trading arrangement could be made rather
than just handing over information. Unfortunately,
sources will not be exchanged becasue they are
not all in my hands and I do not have permissionto share them.

You must be able to prove a direct kinship to
avail yourself of this service.

Uppers

Firstly, I would very much like to have a
copy of the GEDCOM for your line only and any
other Upper material you may have to add to
our general data base. I am still transcribing
many pages of data along with numerous other
family lines. A GEDCOM would assist me greatly
in loading data quickly.

The Uppers came out of the Palatine region of
in the late 1760's following many years of
very unpleasant living conditions, illness and
deaths in the family and war. They were given the chance
to go to Russia, but chose North America.

They set out for Philadelphia [1767], on the Minerva
from Rotterdam, to Cowes-England, and then
ended up in the north-east of New Jersey, in
what was called the Angle. This was a juncture
of the Pappacotting River and the Delaware. The
Upper name is a misnomer, it is now believed
that it was Opfer. And George's name was Johannes
Jerj Opfer--an educated man who could read and
write--not many could. He arrived with his wife
Elwyn Simons, son John and daughter Catherine.

Any rellie that contributes a significant portion
of their Upper history via GEDCOM will get a
full copy of the whole family tree of Uppers
only, at some point in the near future--meaning
as soon as I can get the dang thing finished.

Al Dempster...b1caez01@home.com

I do not know who you think you were
talking to, but, your source is wrong. Maybe
you should check with "him" again.

George had two wives, and until I get your bona
fides cleared that is as much of a hint that
I shall release.
Elwyn paid to have much of his father's work
substantiated. Elwyn has
taken up his dad's work.

To get your facts straight, you will need the
three of us to concur with whatever you think
you may have to contribute...and we would be
happy to share our efforts accordingly.

I am also researching UPPERs. I find most of them so far in Ontario, Canada - in the counties of Welland, Haldimand Wellington back to the mid-1700's. Many of them migrated to the Niagara County/Lockport, NY area. I find a lot of UPPERs listed in the phone books for these areas. I seem to be the only one doing any family research, however. So far my own family list is small. See my tree at: http://hometown.aol.com/CaptBilly/Index.htm
Good luck,
Bill
