Michele,
Go into my tree and you will see what I have. I recently attached a scanned image of the marriage certificate for Philipp Jacob Urban and Catherine Gass. It says that they were from Morsbronn at that time 1828. They had three children: George (our direct ancestor), Henry and Jacob. I believe that this Jacob died in the Buffalo, NY area.

The Jacob that you are seeking must be a cousin.

I show that Philipp Jacob was the son of Johann Jean George Urban, born Mertzwiller 17 Aug 1750 and died in Morsbronn 1803. Mother was Marie Salome Reissner 3 Feb 1760 (unknown birthplace) and died 1 Jan 1835.

If you have trouble viewing my tree, let me know.

Regards,

Robert Constantine
Buffalo, NY

Re: Neffas, Maass, Fregin, Kirdulis, Nemchausky connection

All of these surnames are related. Brothers, Walter and Joseph Neffas. Their sisters were APOLONIA KULIKAUSKAS FREGIN, CLEMENTINA STUNGIS AND BARBARA LAPINSKAS. Martha and Joseph, daughter and son of Joseph NEFFAS,Sr. Genevieve NEFFAS MAAS and Benedict NEFFAS, children of Walter Neffas. WALTER NEFFAS,SR. married DOMICELE KULIKAUSKAS.

Marilyn NEBRENSKY married Joseph NEFFAS, JR.died in 2008 in Wisconsin.

As far as I know, there are no more living descendants. This is a very interesting family. Joseph NEFFAS, Sr. was my great uncle. His first wife from RAMYGALA was FRANCES URBONAS NEFAS from RAMYGALA. His second wife was Carolina Kulikauskas. The two original brothers, and their sisters came from RAMYGALA, Lithuania. Joseph (Bronislavas) NEFAS came over on the same boat as my grandpa ANTON URBAN.

As far as I can tell there is only one living descendant, a WALTER HANKINS, the grand-son of Joseph NEFFAS' first marriage in Lithuania. Neither of the NEFFAS boys had grand-children. The sisters, however, did. ELIZABETH NEFFAS LAPINSKAS had a large family. Clementina STUNGIS had two sons. All children born in Chicago.

I want to learn of the Neffas family in particular because they cut a wide swath in Chicago from 1900 to 1955 with the death of the last son. The NEFFAS HALL is mentioned in Lithuanian publications before 1910 in Cicero.

Walter NEFFAS ran a hotel and bar on OAKLEY.

Urban family from a town with a name similar to Neuendorf

Okay so I've been trying to research this family FOREVER. I've found an immigration record indicating that my 3x great grandpa Albert Urban arrived at New York via Hamburg and Le Havre on the Ship "Bohemia" in November 1881. He was a teenager at the time, and was traveling with his younger brother Joseph and widowed mother Theresia. St. Louis directories later list Theresia as the widow of Wenzel, though Albert's death certificate lists his father as also being named Albert. I believe Wenzel is much more likely since it is more contemporary and since the informant, Albert's wife, never would have known his father.

The Hamburg passenger list I've found appears to list the hometown as Naundorf. The larger political subdivision appears to start with an "L" and end with an "ien" (like Schlesien), but the rest of the word doesn't look like Schlesien to me at all. Without more hints, a town with a name similar to Naundorf narrows it down to...I don't know...several hundred, I imagine. The family was Catholic, which does sort of narrow it, I guess. I'm hoping that someone with knowledge of German naming patterns might be able to narrow it further. Wenzel and Theresia seem like somewhat uncommon names to me that might be mostly exclusive to a handful of regions.

US Census records uniformly identify him as Prussian, which would seem to eliminate Bavaria as a birthplace since Bavaria was never Prussian territory. Ditto with Baden. So that would, off the top of my head, seem to leave places like parts of Hessen, Niedersachsen, Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, and probably all of Schlesien. I'm sure I'm missing one or two.

This is probably of absolutely no help, but I have a picture I believe to be Albert in the late 1880s, and he appears to be slightly stocky and to have dark hair, eyes, and a bit darker than average skin for a German.

Anyway, I'm just hoping that someone can help me crack this case. I'm dying for new information on the Urbans and where exactly they came from.

I have a Jacob Urban born 1813 in Conestoga Township, Lancaster Co, PA. He does not have a son, John, that I have found so far. However, I am very curious about your Jacob Urban, born 7 Feb 1781, in Conestoga Township, Lancaster Co, PA. He may very well be the son of Ludwig Urban. I have a son, Jacob, for Ludwig but have not been able to find his exact birth date. It's not in the Trinity Lutheran Church Records, where most of his brother's and sister's are located. Where did you get the birth date of your Jacob Urban? This may solve a long time mystery for me. I do have a Jacob Urban and wife, Maria who show up for Communion in 1806 at Trinity Lutheran Church. And a marriage record for 24 May 1805. "Married on the 16th inst. in the town of Manheim, by the Rev. Dr. Ernst, Mr. Jacob Urban of the borough to Miss Maria Liverich of the former place." Also, the Jacob Urban I have born in 1813, had a daughter, Anna "Annie" who married and lived in the Borough of Manheim. My email address is Nanmell@ptd.net Regards, Nancy from Lancaster County, PA.

Hello,

Found a record for Alfred Urban in familysearch.org's Switzerland Baptisms, 1491-1940. Love that it provides Baptismal place and parents' names. The last name is spelled differently than our Alred Urben from Wisconsin, but the date seems very plausible. What do you think?

Cheers!

===============

Name: Alfred Urban
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 27 Sep 1874
Baptism/Christening Place: Seeberg, Bern, Switzerland
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Johann Urban
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Barbara Flückiger
Mother's Birthplace:
Mother's Age:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I02844-2
System Origin: Switzerland-EASy
Source Film Number: 2005707
Hi Pam, I would love to get a copy of that book too! If you will send me your email address I'll send you a .pdf file of what I have so far on my Landtroops/Lantrips. If you could send me what you have as well that would be great! It's always good to get new information. Thanks,

Michael Terry
michaelterry@comcast.net
Michael,

I'm just beginning to collect information. Apparently there is a book, The American Genealogy of the Lantrip Family, by James and Ivolue Lantrip that contains an exhaustive history. I do not have access to it, and it's apparently out of print. I am told the Landtroops are in it since that is just one of many spellings of the name. I am told it traces the family to John Lantthorpe, born around 1647, who came to the colonies from England as an indentured servant. Is this information you already have? If not, I'm happy to share what I've gathered.

Pam
