Re: Vail Family book

Levi Vail was born about 1765 in New York. We know this from the 1880 census where his daughter Elizabeth Liming, who is living in Mississippi, lists her father’s birthplace as New York.
In 1788 there was a Levi Vale as witness to a Montgomery County, Virginia marriage.
Sometime about 1795 Levi marries Elizabeth Williams in Virginia. Elizabeth was the
daughter of Jesse Williams who had moved to Culpepper/Orange County,
Virginia from Maryland. Unfortunately all the early census records of these
counties were destroyed in the Civil War. I feel that Levi Vale was living
in Culpepper or Orange County, Virginia when he met and married Elizabeth
Williams, but with no census records it is a brick wall. A book on the
Williams family talks about the marriage of Elizabeth to a Mr, Vail and says
they left for Kentucky and were never heard from again. It speculates that
they died enroute. However they did make it and have many descendants.
Levi shows on the Knox County, Kentucky tax records as Levi VALE from 1815
to 1818. In 1818 Levi was sued for slander in Knox County, Kentucky by Tabitha
Dowis, daughter of Jesse Dowis. After this, he disappears from Kentucky. The line between Know County KY and Greene County, TN changed several times back then cause family records to show both locations. His wife Elizabeth lived in Knox County until her death in 1878. Elizabeth raised a daughter Rachel Vale in Knox County Kentucky. Rachel was born in Virginia in 1797. No other children are to be found in Kentucky. Levi and his other 2 children, Daniel Williams Vail and Elizabeth Vail moved on to Madison County Alabama without his wife and daughter, taking his other children with him. Levi's daughter who remained in Kentucky was named Rachel after Elizabeth's mother.
In the 1830 census of Madison Co., AL, Daniel VAIL is on p. 117
(20001-00001) and Levi VAIL is on p. 137 (000100001-00000001) [Levi
b.1760-70.] Daniel b.1806/7. Daniel appears in the 1840 Jackson Co., AL
census (221001-010101) The 1850 Tippah Co., MS and the 1860 Polk Co., AR
censuses show Daniel W. born in VA. In Johnson Co., TX 1880 census, the parents of
Daniel's son Allison W. are shown born in KY. In 1900 Indian Territory census
(Choctaw Nation), the parents of Daniel's son, James W. VAIL, are shown born
in KY and AL.
William Orange Liming married Elizabeth Vail in Madison County, AL, in 1838. They along with Levi Vail and Daniel Vail had land in the northern part of the county. Elizabeth was born in KY and TN in different census records. Eventually, W. O. and Elizabeth settled in Tippah/ Benton County, MS. not far from Daniel Williams Vail. Elizabeth died in 1888.

So…The question is: Who were Levi’s parents in New Youk? From Naming conventions in this family there is a very strong possibility that his father was named Daniel. Did his parents move from New York to Virginia? Or did levi strike out on this own to Virginia?
Glenmcd@cox.net
Hello, I have a Benjamin T. Vail that married Mary Ann Crane.
I am currently researching my husbands family tree on his mothers side, his mother's maiden name was Vail.

I have Benjamin Townsend Vail born in June 1809 in Carmel, Putnam County, New York and died 14 January 1873 In Morrow County, Ohio he is buried in Bloomfield Cemetery in Morrow County, Ohio.

Benjamin married Mary Ann Crane in 1832. Mary Ann Crane was born in 1812 in Carmel, Putnam County, New York and died 23 July 1883 in Morrow County, Ohio and is also buried in Bloomfield Cemetery in Morrow County, Ohio. I have that they had 13 children.

This is where I am stuck I can't find any information on who was Benjamin Vail's parents. I am seen it on rootsweb and they have his parents as William Vail and Mary Sutton but I can't find any info on either one of them. Do you have any information on them?

On the basis of the original John Vail information, many people have simply added this to their Ancestry family trees. This is very problematic.

The above information attaches the Veles/Veales/Veeles of Longford (from whom the American Vails appear to claim descent) to the Veles of Tortworth, Over and Iron Acton. In particular it is claimed that Thomas Vele who settled in the City of Gloucester(founder of the Longford Veles)was the second son of William Veale of Iron Acton. The problem is pedigrees in the 1569 and 1623 Visitations of Gloucester (for both families) don't show this. Neither does the will of William Veele of Iron Acton (proved 1595) mention a son Thomas (in Gloucester or anywhere else). I don't have access to the original referred to in the above post, so don't know what sources were used.

I have a genuine interest in establishing whether there is a link between the Longford and Tortworth Veles, so if any body has further evidence, please post a note....otherwise we are just doing 'cut & paste', fictional genealogy.

Hello,
You and I corresponded back in 2007 and 2008 about Dr. Reuben Parker Vail. I was trying to get information about my GG grandmother at the time. I am continuing with my research and I now know that Dr. Ruben Parker Vail was my GG Grandfather. His fatherhood of his daughter Jones was out of wedlock with my GG Grandmother Lavinia. Through some recent research, I have discoverd that My G Grandmother, "Jones" got her first name from the maiden name of Dr. Vail's wife, "Sarah Jones".

At the time when we were corresponding, you sent me more information about Dr. Vail. Afer I received the information, my computer crashed and I never had an opportunity to read the information you sent to me entirely. I just wonder if you would send the additional information on the lineage of Dr. Vail to me again. I know it has been a long time, but I would truly appreciate it.

As a PS to an earlier message I posted, I visited the NJ Hist Soc in Newark where they have a copy of the Alfred Vail Files (I believe the other is on file in Washington DC at the Smithsonian). The documents were used as a reference by Wm Penn Vail in his book about Thomas Vail. The information supports the account in the book at least as it relates to Isaac Vail. It appears that Elizabeth Jennings died prior to Isaac's move to WV where he then married Winfred Crabbe about1793-4 and then died c 1805. From there my line goes through their daughter Susannah who married a Cornelius Van Aresdalen, eventually relocating to Ohio. I used Wm Penn Vail's book supported by Alfred Vail's files to prove my lineage back to Edward Fitz Randolph and to Thomas Vail for several hereditary societies and the information was accepted and approved as submitted. If anyone would like additional information, let me know.
Cheers,

Tom Chrisman
tomchrisman1@aol.com

I believe my 5th great grandfather, Nehemiah Vail/Veal, b. abt. 1719, might be an early born son of Moses Vail and Phebe Platt. No church records exist before 1725 in Hempstead, L.I. where Nehemiah would have been born, Does any one have a family Bible or any other documentation to confirm that Nehemiah was of that family. He had a close association with Joseph Vail of Fishkill, a known son of Moses and Phebe, Two of Joseph's daughters, Nancy and Susannah, married nephews of Nehemiah's wife, Mary Archer. They were John and James Archer.

James Vail (1819-1873)

I am looking for parents for James Vail (born 1819 in Ohio, died Feb 1873 in Boone County, Indiana). James married Selina Hampton, daughter of Michael Hampton and Mary Booher, in Montgomery County, Indiana on 28 Mar 1839. They had at least 15-16 children in Montgomery & Boone County, Indiana.

James appears in the 1840 Census (misspelled as Vale) in Montgomery County. There is another, older James Vail (also misspelled as Vale in the Census) in Montgomery County in the 1840 Census who fits the age of being James 1819's father.

I'd be interested in records linking the two, and showing where the Vail family came from before Indiana, in Ohio or beyond. This has been a nagging brick wall for me for years. James 1819 was my 4xgreat-grandfather.

Patrick Jones
pljones96@gmail.com

I would be interested to know if the book lists James Vail (born in Ohio 1819, died in Boone County, Indiana in February 1873). James married Selina Hampton, daughter of Michael Hampton & Mary Booher, in Montgomery County, Indiana on 28 Mar 1839. I've been at a brick wall trying to figure out where James came from in Ohio. There is an older James Vail in the 1840 US Census in Montgomery County, Indiana (born btw 1790-1800), could be James 1819's father.

James and Selina had a huge family, 15-16 children.

Patrick Jones
pljones96@gmail.com

Adrian - are you on Facebook? (Personally, I dislike that site, but... everyone seems to be on it, these days...) Anyway, if you ARE, then we could exchange e-mail addresses on that site, instead of putting that info online, here...

If so, just look me up (Victor Vail) - couldn't be easier...

Victor

Adrian - I only have 2 photos of your dad, but they are great photos (I've scanned them, and can send to you). One is his military photo (Navy???) - wow, is he handsome... Reminds me of a Cary Grant type. Full smile - incredibly handsome, close-up shot. The other photo is from 1938. The Columbus Dispatch (I think that was the name of the newspaper) ran a FULL-PAGE PHOTO(!) of that family: Walter Beebe family at Christmas. Walter & Dorothy, with my dad (who was 16), Barbara, Roger, and Walter. Your dad has to be about 12 yrs old, on the floor, opening a Christmas gift. Great photo. Would love to send these to you.

Victor

Victor-I am very glad that you got to experience Port Salerno at the age and year that you did. I live just north of that area, and am in Rocky Point quite often. Just about every day. I never had the chance to meet Dorothy or Fred (that I can remember), but I do have Fred's old case knife from when he was a child, it is one of my greatest treasures. In reply to my fathers' paintings I greatly appreciate the fact that you enjoyed them. I have quite a few of the paintings myself, and have no problem sending pictures of them for you to see. I had no clue that my dad came from the "farm life". I myself still live as close to the beach as possible so I can surf and fish. One thing I never picked up on was the love for a sailboat...must be a great experience traveling the world on one. Did grow up flower farming in the summers on a farm that my family owned...so I got some farm life in me.

I realize your post was made years ago, but I saw that you mentioned Samuel James Vail, Stephen Montfort Vail, and Louisa Cushman Vail. I am looking for a photo of Louisa. One of Samuel would be great, too. I have one of Stephen M. Vail if you would like it. I would really love a photo of Louisa. Being a prominent family, I feel like there must be photos of them and their children out there somewhere! Thanks for your help.

Adrian - My dad, Robert William Vail,("Bill" Vail), was your own dad's older brother. Only met "Uncle Roger" once, down in Port Salerno, FL (at their mother's home - Dorothy Brownlee, back then) - and it was my only chance to see his artwork. The man was a brilliant artist. I will never forget (even to this 12-year child back then!) how intense his paintings were. I'd only seen paintings like that in books - and wow... His work definitely made an impression on me. He was kind to my sister & me (spent a night on his boat), incredibly handsome - and seemed to me to be everything I wanted to grow up to be... He was as far away from living a life on the farm as anyone I'd met - and how I wanted to be him. Guess it's safe to say he was a powerful presence.

Keep wishing his artwork would turn up somewhere, but the only painting of his I know of belongs to another cousin of yours (Dan Scholl) who is Roger's sister's son. (Your aunt Barbara.)

Your cousin,
Victor Vail
