Just recently came across a file of old obituaries which I have been meaning to post. This may be your family:
Versailles Leader-Statesman (Missouri), Thursday, Jan. 25, 1996, p. 2
Ramon Valdez, 72, Versailles, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 1996, at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles where he had been a patient for six weeks.
He was born in Reynosa Tamps, Mexico, on May 15, 1923, a son of Juan and Estephania Garza Valdez.
On Dec. 3, 1963, at Troy, he married Bernice Martin, who survives at their home near Versailles.
Mr. Valdez was employed for several years as a butcher with the Schneider Packing Company in St. Louis. Ramon and Bernice had lived in the Troy/Wentzville area until moving to Stockton, Calif., where they lived for four years. In 1991, they moved to a farm west of Versailles.
He was a member of the United Pentacostal Church in Columbia.
In addition to his wife Bernice, he is survived by four sons, Jeff Ray and his wife, Kathy, St. Charles; Mark Ray and his wife, Rhonda, Lake Sherwood; Martin Ray and his wife Brenda, St. Charles; and Ramon Valdez Jr., Tucson Ariz.; five daughters, Elizabeth Denny and her husband Ron, Warrenton; Victoria Cook and her husband Jason, Versailles; Elvira Molina and San Junaita Bravo, both of Tucson, AZ, and Anna Maria Bravo, McAllen, Texas; one brother, Jose Valdez, Fort Worth, Texas; 22 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Felipe, Juan, Baldomero, and Jesus Valdez.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at the Scrivner Chapel in Versailles. Interment was in the Oak grove Cemetery near Versailles with Jeff Ray, Mark Ray, Martin Ray, Ramon Valdez Jr., Ron Denny and Jason Cook serving as casketbearers. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Scrivner Funeral Home in Versailles.
Meteo Valdez

Am hoping to connect with anybody that might have information about my grandfather Meteo Valdez. He was born about 1870, and he lived in the Mendez Tamaulipas, Mexico area in 1892 when my father Felipe Aguilar Valdez was born and he was married to my grandmother Sotera Aguilar. I'm told that after he and my grandmother separated he remarried and started a second family. His new wife's maiden name was Leal, so my father Felipe has half-brothers that go by the surname Leal Valdez or Valdez Leal. And I've been told that they still reside somewhere in the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico. So if anybody has any information on this person, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank You in advance for your time.

Interesting Question!

Interesting that the name “Valdez” (Son of Boldo) came out of Austuria, Spain which was the only place in Spain that never became part of the Moorish Invasion of Spain in the of beginning of the 8th century primarily because as with the Romans and Visigoths, the Moors also found the mountainous territory of the Austurias which is the land along Spain's northern coast a hard land to conquer, and therefore never fully became part of Islamic Spain.

I also found interesting that this region became a sanctuary and refuge for Christian nobles during the Moorish occupation and perhaps also a sanctuary for Spanish Jews until Spain expelled the Spanish Jews in 1492 under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Many travelled with the Spanish Conquistadores during that time and many fled to other countries.

A former state historian of New Mexico has done extensive research on this subject. Also have found an interesting article sometime back titled “New Mexico Sephardim: Uncovering Jewish Roots” in the magazine “La Herencia Del Norte” Issue 12, winter 1996. My father who has been studying Hebrew and I have always found this to be a fascinating subject. Any information anyone else has I am sure would be interesting to follow. My email address is gjv420@gmail.

Sincerely,

Gerald John Valdez

Hi Elsie,
I'm M. Ursula Salas (Valdez) de Tristan.
I just found this wedsite. My 8th greatgrandfather was Jose Luis Valdez de Ruiz he was born in Olviedo Spain in in 1164. He was a Sargent in the Conquista and died in New Mexico, was killed by the Zunis. His father and mother stayed in Spain.
I moved back just 10 years ago from living in Spain for 13 years. I met my husband in Spain, he is a Spaniard-therefore I was living there. I wish I had found the above information while I was living there in Spain.

Anyway, if possible I would really appreciate if you could also send your links. I will also buy the book mentioned. Thanks again. If I can help in anyway, please let me know.
Ursula

Hi. My ex-husband was born in Monte Vista in 1945 and his family is from the same Del Norte/Monte Vista area (in particular, a section called Plaza de los Valdeses that sits in between the two). I was directed to a new database that is in its infancy on FamilySearch.org that is loaded with transcribed information from original records (of course, only as good as the transcribers, but still.....) I have found SO MUCH information on my ex's family (which is also my kids' family) that I was unable to find anywhere else! Birth records, death records, marriages, etc. When you get to the home page of FamilySearch.org look for a link halfway down and slightly to the left that has the word "prototype" in it. That is the database. It is all FREE and you don't need to register - although you can if you want. I have found information on my Anglo family having been researched by others on the main page database, but on this new prototype database, I have FINALLY found the Valdezes, Arellanos and even the Census record showing my FIL's first wife's family! Nowhere else have I been able to find them! So, check out that as soon as you can. I think you might just have a bit of success there. From there, you should pick up leads for where else to look. Good luck!!!
