I am responding to a query about descendants of Eric and Evelyn.
Eric is my husband's great uncle from mother's side. My understanding is that he died last year and would have been over 100 years old. He did not have any children. He died in Sutherland, NSW, Australia.

Try TROVE. There are references to Bacchus marsh Vallances.
you may find birth death and marriage entries. There are oother entries..references to livestock and so on so you may find information there. If you are using TROVE for the first time it can be frustrating.

It would seem a little difficult to make any Vallence connection to Aymer de Valence. He was married to Marie de Valence also known as Marie de la Pole (who founded Pembroke College in Cambridge). Unfortunately Aymer died without issue so that would be the end of that line of enquiry. There is an interesting biography of him by JRS Phillips, OUP 1972. I am interested in any information on the Vallences in Bacchus Marsh that anyone might have. Can anyone help?

I am researching William Vallance born 1832 in cumnock. He married Mary Ferguson in 1852 in Bute. William's father was Robert Vallance born 1790 and mother was catherine smith. I have two of Williams sibling Agnes Vallance & Grace Vallance.
Agnes married Alexander Ferguson & Grace married James Kerr. I know that William, Agnes & Grace all came to Victoria Australia and was wondering if anyone had details on other siblings. I can be contacted on mekarin at hotmail dot com.
with thanks,
Karin

One owned the Caladonia Hotel in Melbourne and another was a ships captain.
I do know that William and his convict brother where shopkeeper at the Eureka Diggings. David (William's brother) later on had a sly grog shop and got himself in and out of trouble but I cannot find anything about him after 1853. I think he may have changed his name.
Or maybe he was behind the possible ripping off William.
Will have to do a bit more digging on this matter.

First of all, I must apologise for not replying sooner. My husband asked me to look into the family of a woman at work, her grt grandmother had suddenly disappeared in 1920 leaving about 8 children. Unfortunately I discovered that she had died suddenly at 36 and the children had all been farmed out or adopted. Amazingly I did find her grave not far from here, and the grandfather's grave with his third wife up in the mountains of South Carolina. I cannot seem to find any connection between your George born in 1838 in Kent. He and Emma were lving in Clerkenwell, London in 1871 and as "my" Vallances, originally from Coventry, were also in London shortly after, maybe there is a link there. We'll just keep plodding away. I'm so glad to be back looking at English Census' the US ones were driving me crazy, no addresses and haphazard spelling of names.
Merry Christmas, Marion

Hi, looking for any info on these two. Their daughter Mary was born in Chatham, Kent, UK in 1822 but I cannot find her birth record. Thomas was a ship's captain so not sure if they were based in Chatham. Cannot find a marriage record for Annie and Thos, though I presume they were married. Daughter Mary ended up in Ballarat, Australia married to William Neil WARREN of London.
Many thanks if anyone can help :)

Hi Hugh,
The Earl of Pembroke was Henry 111's half brother and he was a right scoundrel according to the English. He was also called William De Lusignan but he is generally known (according to English history.. Sharon Penman) as William De Valence as that is where he came from. Of interest is the monotonous way the Vallances use the names including William, Hugh and Agnes and these were all Lusignan names.
There are references to the De Valences in Scotland in literature..not complimentary either.
PS Did you see that Thomas Vallance came out in the second fleet..he'd had his death sentence commuted to life. Later came Agnes and Mary. Thomas came from Middlesex Assizes and his relos look like they are in NSW.
Anyway thought you might be interested in that possible very early link.

William may well have had a relationship with his housekeeper - or married her - I've never see proof of either. If there was a marriage, surely someone would have found it, so the most likely scenario is a "relationship".

As for ancestors in France, William's line is proven only as far back as his grandparents, Alexander Vallance and Grace Dickie in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, but the Ayrshire Vallances as a group can be traced back to a couple of families in Auchinleck, near Cumnock, in the early 1500s. Before that is guesswork, but there might be a link with the east coast (Fife), via Thomas Boswell who got Auchinleck from King James IV in the late 1400s/early 1500s. Boswells' family and the early Vallances around Fife had family links. At the moment I can see no hard evidence, however - it's a work in progress. The "we came from France" story is common in families with Vallance ancestry, usually linked to the Huguenots or the French Revolution, but both of these occurred too late to have been the source of the Scottish Vallances.

Hugh VS McIntyre.

The story was that William's third partner was his housekeeper. They are reported to have had a child. William refused to marry his housekeeper and so his daughter grew up with the stigma of being illegitimate. This stigma caused deep hurt and on William's death this daughter burnt documents pertaining to the family history.
She was reported to have not married or to have had any offspring.
Sunday, 3 October 2010

Hello Dorothy! I don't believe I have ever contacted you before. Just found your message to me on the VALLANCE Ancestry Board.
Judging from your message, your mother, Jean was a sister-in-law to my father's cousin, Margaret MacMorland, who was married to Robert Vallance.
Would love to hear from you.
Cheers, Diana in British Columbia, Canada

Emily b. 1886 d.1976 (did not marry)
A story always floated around that Eleanor was a mistress, not a wife, and "took off with the family fortune", which was reputed to have been very large (money made during the Ballarat gold rush). When I was born my father wanted to call me Eleanor (after a friend in Sydney. But my grandmother (Wilmet Vallance) was 'so horrified' at the prospect of having a 'legitimate' Eleanor Vallance in the family, insisted that she be able to choose the spelling of my name, hence my name was spelt Ellenor, not the conventional Eleanor. Have you ever heard of this so-called 'mistress'? If so, what do you know about her?

3rd Marriage to ?????? children??????

Both William and Mary are burried at Learmonth Victoria.

Eric & Evelyn were married 1934 in Sydney, Australia. Evelyn was born 1908 in London, England and immigrated to Australia with her family somewhere between 1911 and 1930. Eric was born around 1905 and I think born in Sutherland, Australia. He worked as an assistant shop keeper. His father was Ernest William Vallance who died in 1963. Ernest owned the shop.

Eric & Evelyn were living at 99 Princes Highway in Sutherland. I am looking for any children or grandchildren for them.

Thanks!

Re: Vallance Family of Croil's Island, Louisville Landing, Ontario

William Finney, farmer, age 32, born Scotland, is listed in the 1870 US census at Louisville, St Lawrence County, with wife, Isabelle Finney, age 31, ditto, and 4 children - William (13) b Canada, Robert (11) b NY, John (5) b NY and Alexander (3) b NY. William and Robert were listed as Valance [sic] and the name scored through, evidently sons of James Vallance, Isabelle’s first husband.

The ages against William Vallance and Marion Nimmo in the 1841 Scotland (Paisley) census can be taken with a grain of salt. Marion’s is ridiculously low given the age of the son, James, so they are wrong, and this William and Marion must be the pair who moved to Canada in 1842. There are no other candidates, none whatever. In a letter written in 1842 from Croil's Island to Scotland. George Cross wrote - "Alexander Nimmos son in law, William Vallance is coming here direct." So Marion’s family were already there. George Cross’s daughter, Agnes, married Alexander Vallance. This Alexander Vallance was born on 21 August 1834 in Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Though it’s not strictly relevant, I should point out that Avondale is a long, narrow county, and Alexander was born at the Ayrshire end, virtually in Ayrshire. He died in 1900 in Ontario. As far as my records show me, he was no close kin of William. These letters and much else are in a website devoted to the Cross family in Canada/USA. http://home.ix.netcom.com/~drcross/index.htm

Was there a link between Alexander and William Vallance? At the moment, the only useful answer is - don’t know. You surmise William had brothers James, Robert and maybe Hugh, and that Robert may have emigrated to Canada. Alexander’s younger brother, Robert, went to Canada and married Margery Steen there. His father, also Robert, went to Canada c1841. Alexander had an uncle James Vallance who didn’t go to Canada, and an uncle Hugh Vallance who didn’t go to Canada. One thing he didn’t have, or which I have never found, is a relation called William. William Vallance was from Ayrshire, according to an article in the St Lawrence Republican, June 20th, 1900, which wouldn’t clash with the preceding. Based on his year of birth, William could technically have been a brother of Robert, James and Hugh hence an uncle of Alexander, but there is, as yet, not a scrap of evidence to support that.

All for now.

Hugh VS McIntyre.
Re: Vallance Family of Croil's Island, Louisville Landing, Ontario

Hi: Unfortunately, I don't have any connection to the Vallance family so can't help in that respect, but maybe I can shed some light on the border issues. Before 1818, Croil's Island (AKA Ile au Chamailles, Baxter's Island, Stacey's Island) belonged to Canada (a British colony). After the War of 1812, they redrew the boundaries in the St. Lawrence River and it became US territory (part of Louisville, NY). Nevertheless, many of the island residents maintained their ties to their Stormont County roots. They attended churches on the Canadian side, carried on business there, and many were buried on Canadian soil. For example, quite a few Croils were buried in the Woodlands West Cemetery located near Farran's Point (now flooded by the Seaway). Some of their stones were saved and are now embedded in the walls of the Pioneer Memorial (located at Upper Canada Village). If you go to www.cornwallroots.com you can see photos of the stones of the Croils. Maybe something on that site could help with your Vallances.

Vallance Family of Croil's Island, Louisville Landing, Ontario

I am trying to trace back my Vallance side of the family. I have gotten to James Vallance (b. 1836 Scotland and drowned in the St Lawrence River in 1863). His wife Isabel (Isabella, Isabelle) Vallance Finnie(b.1838 in Avondale Lanarkshire Scotland and d. 1904 on Croil's Island.) My trail stops except that I know Isabel married William Hamilton Finnie.
1) I can't go back any further on Isabel and would like to.
2) I think James is the son of William Vallance (b.1812 d. 1884) and Marion Nimmo (b. 1814 d. 1900), but I am not sure.
I have seen 1850 Census where it seems to jive - James is born in Scotland, but I have seen a Scotland 1841 Census where his age jives but William and Marion Nimmo's ages do not.
3) I keep feeling like there are (2) sets of William Vallance and Marion Nimmo families out there that are the same age (sounds crazy, I know). There are either 2 families or they are bouncing around between Croil's Island (which I think also is synonymous with Louisville) and The Lost Villages in Canada. At times I get confused and think they are in both the US census AND the canadian census at almost the same time even though there are clear immigration dates.
I have been using the NNY newspapers online, which I find are helpful, but not 100% and have found two big errors in their narratives.
4) If William is James' father who are William's brothers and sisters? I think he has a brother Robert and brother James and maybe a Hugh. I am guessing Robert came to Canada. I don't know about James and suspect Hugh ended up in Austraila. I do know that William came from Scotland to Canada/Croil's Island in 1842.

Sorry - for the long post! and Thanks if anyone can offer any help.
Re: Valance/Vallance bible records found in Michigan

I am not sure of where my relatives Vallance/valance
connection ends and begins exactly.
There are relatives that had spelled the name both ways on as seen on headstones. In Potiox region of france in 1800's is a court decree allowing the surname Vallance to change spelling to Valance. Not sure why.
Does this family have any other information?
Thank you. This is my Grandfather, son of George Vallance a.k.a Henry Green Vallance b. in Greenup, KY, son of Carter Vallance of Greenup, Kentucky, son of Samuel Vallance of KY and wife Deliah Horsley. Samuel Vallance was b. 1781 in NY. My Grandmother Ruby Dell Vallance descends from the Southard family of Dutchess County, NY (well back in the 1600's) Her father John Southard changed his name to John Thomas when he moved from Oklahoma to Texas in 1899. Currently searching for the parents of Samuel Vallance b. 1781 in New York. He also lived in PA in 1800-1810 and may have had a family and children then went to KY and served in the War of 1812 and stayed the rest of his long life in Greenup, KY. Bledsaw@verizon.net

Laura, James K. Vallance has a brother David Vallance. Is this the David Vallance that was perished in the Johnstown, PA flood? Also if anyone can help with sooo many spellings of the name in PA if I knew how you pronouced the name? VA-LANCE OR VAL-LANCE? What about checking religious denominations in seperating the PA Vallances from 1750-1820. Also seperating those connected from NY to PA? And last, their founded occupations since I have found many to be seamen from NY to PA. Please help if you can. Bledsaw@verizon.net
