Vito Valletta was my great-grandfather. He was actually born in America (to Antonio Valletta), but raised in Valva which he was sent back to when he was like 2. He came back to America at 19-ish, sent for by Antonio Spiotta to marry his sister.
He originally lived at 125 High St., Brooklyn (an address that no longer exists, as it was demolished so the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway could be plowed through) and had a tailor shop in Newark, NJ (where he probably had another family: http://geoffchaucer.diaryland.com/Vito.html).
Email me if you want to know more!

Vincent,

Thank you for sharing the obituary. Actually, I did see it in the Waterbury paper. I believe that the Santopietro listed in the obituary (Orazio) was my late grandfather's godfather. I've yet to establish any connection.

Regards...
Louis

Me again....

Have you ever been to Pontelandolfo?? It is quite a small village and everyone speaks Italian only except for the local police..Pietro and an employer of the town office and his wife..Genero and Marilena...that we met. We spent only 2 days there but had the best food and cappicinos ever. We visited the local cemetary....and a Rocco Valletta. ??..a family member is burried there. Since I thought this would be the only time I would ever find myself in Italy...I just had to go visit my mom's family's roots.
I was able to show my mom photos when I got back before she passed away. That was very special to me. Sally

Hi Louis,
No I do not speak Italian. I visited Pontelandolfo 2 years ago and met my grandfathers half brother.Giovanni and his wife Falicia Valletta.. While in the village, there was a monument to "Bridgeport"..and a few people who had died in an accident. My Uncle ...Tony (Anthony Valletta) used to live in Waterbury until he died a few years ago. I used to visit Waterbury as a child ...my grandparents lived there...Salvatore and Angelina Valletta who are also both passed away.My Mom was Livia Gilchrest (Valetta). She passed away in 2003 and there were some Valletta's at he funeral. So as you can see...all of the Valletta's that I know have passed away. My brother and sisters still live in the Conn, NY, Mass. area...Edward, Linda and Sharon...and my dad still lives in Connecticut...Ed Gilchrest..not a Valletta...but was married to my mom for 50 some odd years and knew many Valletta' from Waterbury. I now live in Canada...Hope this is helpful. Let me know and I can hook you up with their email addresses. They may be able to assist you in your task.
