Not sure if I can help. Some of the info that I got came from the census of different years, One of the best things that I found was to research property holdings such as where they lived. Sometimes it would give a different spelling of the name of the owner of the house and that helped me to get to trace back further. Another thing I found helpful was to find old marriage records. Alot of them are on line or a historical society sometimes will help locate records for a county that your are looking to find them. If I find anything on any of the Van's I will forward it to you and see if it fits.

Katie, as much as I would love for this to be my grandmother, I'm afraid it isn't. The little bit of information I have on her is a marriage license and date of death from a family records book. It is said that she ran away from home to marry my grandpa and though was porported to be 16, her age on the marriage license was smudged. We think she probably was 14 at time of marriage. I do not know who her parents were. Apparently they did not approve of the marriage and cut off contact with her. The Pulaski County I referred to is in Arkansas. Thank you for your reply to this query.
Linda Stevens
Willie VAN - Gilliss Orphan's Home - Kansas City, MO - 1903

"The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Friday, December 25, 1903

AT THE GILLISS HOME.

The eighty-six inmates of the Gilliss Orphan's Home at
Twenty-second street and Tracy had a delightful Christmas
at the home yesterday afternoon. In the parlor was a
Christmas tree and Santa Claus came down the big
chimney into the fireplace. As Dr. Frank NEFF, who
represented St. Nicholas, stepped out into the room, the
children jumped and clapped their hands and shouted,
"Ha, we have caught you at last!"

"Sure enough you have," returned Santa Claus as he began
filling the stockings which had been hung up around the
fireplace. There were dolls, toys, fruits, nuts and candy
for all.

The entertainment was arranged by a committee headed by
Mrs. J. R. MERCER. This committee had decorated the
parlor with festoons of evergreen and with holly wreathes.

Each year Mrs. MERCER presents a watch to the boy
whose general deportment for the year has been the highest;
and the best behaved girl each Christmas gets a fully
equipped work box. The prize winners yesterday were
Willie VAN and Bertha WARREN.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo4
Re: Looking for Van family in CO.

Tahn,

Though the name you mention have no meaning to me as I don't know the families of my G-Uncles, I do know that my Grandmother had a brother that moved to Colorado.

Recently I found part of a newpaper article that had my Uncle escorting a Mrs. Harold Van Schaeffer to something in 1930?

My Grandmother's maiden name known to me was Shafer, Shaffer, and yet on the back of a picture of her parents yet another spelling Shaefer. So many spellings.

I know my Uncle didn't marry a Van Schaeffer, but it noted a Juen (June was the name of my Uncle's wife) in attentance at this gathering. Thus first clue I could be looking for Van Schaeffer. I believe this gathering was in Lima, Allan Co., Ohio or nearby.

Could this have been a descendant connection of the Shaffer family that went to Colorado? Don't know at this point if he returned to Ohio or not.

Any help would be appreciated.

Meaning of Van

In a partial article of a newspaper, I found my Uncle from Lima, Allen Co., Ohio to be escorting a Mrs. Harold Van Schaeffer probably 1930's to something. And I think a misprint of a name of a girl in attendance Juen (June) being in attendance. Now I know he married someone of the name June, and his Mother's maiden name was Shafer, Shaffer, and on the back of a picture of her parents the name was written Shaefer. So all of this may be in the same family.

I have not found a listing for a Van Scheaffer board but am requesting one. Perhaps this is why I have found the Shaffer, etc family so difficult to trace.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Jayne,
Sorry but I have no other info at this point. I am just beginning my search on this line of my husbands family. The only info that I have at this time is from Fannie Vann Buxton's death certificate and obit, which only lists her parents and children, no siblings. I will definetly share any info that I may come across in the future. If you should be interested in Fannies family, email me and I will be glad to give you what I have.
Good Luck on your search,
Vicki
