Hi Vancils.

Carrie passed away last year. Im Carl Macy Jr., her son, I'm an attorney in San Francisco; and would love to get in contact with any of the Vancil Family that I have not seen in many years. Our family has had quite a bit of tragedy in the recent past, and it would be a joy to meet so many of the people I grew up hearing wonderful stories about.

Hi all,

This is an announcement and not an ad. It has just been that so many have e-mailed me about a paper copy of the book that I wanted to notify that the book is now available in paper format at this web site:
https://www.createspace.com/3717030
It is a nice paperback book that is about 300 pages long. It looks like a regular book. They are selling it for $20.
I hope to have an index to this book on my web site shortly. Also a copy of all the colorized maps. I had the book printed in B&W because the color version would have cost 2.5 times as much.
I have edited it and "cleaned" it up from the last printing and I have numbered all the generations for ease of cross-referencing.

MaryAnn Doty Rizzo (John's daughter)

My father was one of 7 born according to the birth records I copied at the Union county court house. Per the records She was born in TN. I do not know it that helps. I also noticed that there were other Vancils that married into the Coleman family. Per the records at the court house. For more info you can call the court house the people are very nice there.

The 1860 Montgomery Co., MO census shows Rhoda E. as a 1 year old. I have been unable to find this family in 1870. I believe that by 1880 Rhoda has married for the first time, but I do not know who she married. I find her father, John D. Vancil with his family in Pike County, Illinois with children John, Carrie, Nancy, Edward and Arthur.

About 1893 Rhoda is married to George Albert Turnbough. In 1900 they are living in Lincoln County, MO with 2 children. Rhoda is shown as Emiline on this census record and gives her birth date as Oct. 1861. In 1910 they are living in Jefferson County, Oklahoma, and Rhoda states on this census record that she has been married 2 times.

I haven't found Rhoda and George Turnbough in the 1920 census but I believe they were still living in Oklahoma. I found an entry in "The Ringling Eagle", the newspaper in Ringling Oklahoma, August 1922, that tells us "G.A. Turnbough and family left for New Mexico and other western points in an effort to improve Mrs. Turnbough's health". Rhoda died November 28, 1923 in Clovis, Curry County, NM. She is buried in Clovis Cemetery but I don't know if there is a tombstone or not.

Albert Lester Turnbough, a son of Rhoda and George, is in Chaves County, NM in 1930. On this record he states he is Indian, 1/4 mixed, Cherokee. I haven't found any census record for Rhoda with this information.

I have followed Effie Elizabeth Turnbough, a daughter of Rhoda and George. Effie married Cleveland Columbus Lyle. They lived in Oklahoma and at some point in time moved to Polk County, Arkansas. Effie is buried in Baker Cemetery in Wickes, Pope County, Arkansas along with other members of this family.

Shirley Lyle, a daughter of Effie, was married to Jimmy Lon Longbine and Charles Powell. Christy Tuck, a granddaughter of Shirley, is married to my grandson. They have 2 young daughters.

I just came across your message with reference to John Vansill and Susan King, and would like to discuss this relationship. According to my records John Vansill was John Dawson (Cherokee Indian). He married and changed his name. There are several things I am trying to connect with this name. Please contact me at MO1@citlink.net. Tom W. Sisson

Hi Alva Lee:
I shall post info on the Rizzo book separately to make it easier for others to find. Here, I am interested in what documents you have to support the connection between Johann Willhm Wenzel and Jonas Vancil. There is a problem in assuming that a Wenzel on the Snow Two Sisters ship is an ancestor for the Vancils in this country. There was a goodly number of Wenzels who came to America in the 18th century, and the question is which of these was the father of John Vancil, who lived in what is now Somerset County, PA from about 1770 to 1790 before moving on to Virginia to be near his brother, Edmund. John was married to Mary Penrod, and they were the parents of ALL the children whose descendants are the Vancils in this country, including Jonas. The evidence for John and Mary is presented in Doty's book, which his daughter MaryAnn is making available, and I have confirmed his research by looking at the probate, land, and marriage documents. Doty says that Johan Adam Wentzel was the father of John,Suzanna, and Mary--all of whom were beneficiaries of their brother, Edmund, who died childless in Montgomery Co, VA in 1815. However, Doty did not include EVIDENCE on the connection between these siblings and Johan Adam Wentzel. Doty may be right, but proof is needed. Do you have any evidence to prove Johan Willhm Wenzel is an ancestor? It is not enough that some other researcher says he was an ancestor.

Thank you and I agree. That is one of the reasons I started my own research. A family member wrote a so called family history and it had many mistakes in it. I decided to do my own research and try to get documentation to back up every thing.

Re: Confused about Johann Adam Wentzell line

The problematic birth date for Maria Brerathin is just one of many difficulties about her, and there is another set of problems about Johan Adam Wentzell. John Hubert Doty makes the case for this Wentzell in his book, Vancel and Lyerly Families in America, published in 1991, as the ancestor who immigrated to America in 1750. Doty indicated that he had evidence to document the link between this Wentzell and John Vancil (Vancel, or many other spellings), who is the well-documented ancestor of all the Vancils in America. However, Doty did not include the evidence, and it is also not included in the now-available edition of his book by his daughter, MaryAnn Doty Rizzo. Perhaps there is no evidence, but merely the fact that Johan Adam Wentzell arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship Patience in 1750, and this is a plausible arrival time for John Vancil's father, given Doty's reasoning that John was born around 1744. I have devoted many hours to this investigation, and I have found no evidence that directly links John Vancil to ANY ancestor. If anyone else has found any documents that link John Vancil or his brother Edmund or his sisters to Johan Adam Wentzell or Maria Brerathin, I would be grateful to know of it. However, if the best any of us can do is to speculate about a merely plausible candidate, then we should say so and not pretend to know that Johan Adam Wentzell is a documented ancestor. Family history should not be confused with family mythology.

I am researching my Vancil line. I have found that Susanna is said to be the daughter of Issac Vancil and Katherine Putmaster. Still trying to validate all this and ran into a puzzlement.

Issac is said to be the son of Jonathan Vancil and Mary Penrod. Jonathan is said to be the son of Johann Adam Wentzell and Maria Brerathin. She is supposed to have been born 1743 yet their son Jonathan Vancil, is said to have been born 1747. That would mean that Maria was only 4 years old when Jonathan was born.

Does anyone have this line with validation?

My great-great grandfather was Edward Otis Vancil- Vansel. His parents were James Daniel Vancil, he was born in Illinois around 1845, he married Mary Elizabeth Pruitt, they had 3 children , Edward, Anna, And Louis. My grandfathers name was changed when he was in elementary school. The 3 spellings in my immediate family are Vancil, Vansel, and Vansell. My e-mail address is sctiger92@yahoo. com.
