Hi Deb, we must be cousins. I can't determine your last name, but perhaps we've met at one of the family reunions in Barronett?

My great-grandmother is Minda Annette Oleson Vang Sands Wilson (whew) born 1880 in Norway. Came to US in 1884 with her parents and newly born little sister Pauline. Settled in Warrens Wisconsin (very near to black river falls), then moved to Barronett, WI. She married Paul Sands and they moved to St. Paul, MN to raise their family. Paul died in the flu epidemic of 1918 and she remarried Laro Wilson. Mattie and Minda were sisters.

Hello - I'm from Norway, and Olaf Vang (Østvang) was born on the same farm as me, in Os i Østerdalen. Olaf had an older brother Peder Tollefsen, but they had not the same mother. Peders son, Toralf Pedersen Østvang, was my grandfather, so Olaf was Toralfs uncle. The farm has been in the family for eleven generations. Some information about Olafs life and family in Minnesota would be very interesting.

Any old history you have of Vang, on Bornholm island in Denmark I would like to hear about... We just returned from Bornholm and the town of Vang is so beautiful.. I had to laugh as when the bus driver was going down the hill into the town of Vang, I said every time we would go through this little town I pictured myself living in one of the house's overlooking the Baltic.......he said that he did the same thing, then we started a friendly argument as to which house was his and which one was mine... very beautiful there .. in the winter the buses can not go down to the bottom of the small village as it is so steep and icy... so it turns around at the top of the hill... fun to rething being there.... angela

LeonVanzan Vang

Hey there this LeonVanzan Vang from Stockton, CA. You got quite some weird reply there. Funny that I find myself here in this Forum alongside Hmong and European alike for their ancestry trace. It is very interesting to see a European with the surname Vang. I thought it was only us. But I think it's only a coincidence that we happen to have a same spelled Surname Vang. But below is a long review.

Lets put the surname aside here and review the history to how it may came to be. To all those who don't know Hmong Vang.....according to what I know, we resided in Laos and
Thailand for the last 2 century since the 1800s, due to the Chinese repression to convert us. We has always rebel against that since the time of our great forefathers, Chi-Yu. Migrating south for escape, we first arrived in North Vietnam and became more of a hill or mountainous people. Today the Black and Blue Hmongs in Northern Vietnam still maintain the original language- speak partly a Chinese accent and a tradition once fleeing from China. Then we migrated further south, hitting Laos, we are then mixed with them, although not genetically or through marriage because we're still quite primitive to them.

That being said, we may have picked many other tradition additional to our own. Despite that, we aren't native to any Southeast Asian countries, we originated in northern China and may be more so related to them. We are in looks and terms in tradition very similar to that of the Mongolian and Manchurian, as we still practice the millennium old ways of the Shamans....one that is true to the Tuvan & Yakuts people in north-eastern Siberia, perhaps the whole Mongoloid race of Siberia practice this and it's also very similar to the Native American here if you sutdy closely.

We are a race living in Diasporas, we are the Jews of Asia. We are a race that has in millennium in contact with the western peoples such as Persians, Arabic and European Russians, maybe even be that of the extincted Tocharians in early Western Xinjing, China. The Tocharians are the first blond/reddish haired, blue/green eyed people to ever set foot in early China about 3-5 thousand years ago. The Chinese recorded that they looked like true hairy monkeys. They practice a tradition similar to those of the Egyptian-- mummification.

They may have brought the first horse ridding into China and spur the great Caucasian-Mongoloid tribe of the north east such as the Goturk, Xiongnu and many other Turkic tribes. With that you can clearly see why the northern Asians speaks a different language not know or even related to the Chinese. They evolved into several tribe in time, the most critical tribe is the Barbarian Xiongnu that attacked China in the movie Mulan. Defeated, they turns toward west and invaded Europe, the Roman empire fought them, said they were savage barbarians. You may know them as the Huns, lead by Attila. That said, they can also be the ancestor of modern day Mongolia-- same way of life, same way of conquering. Somewhere in your reply a guy mentioned the possibility of the Viking influence. That can be also facts, whether or not it's directly, surely we did have connection with the West.

Due to that we can be a interracial mix in the beginning, because the Chinese has always referred to us in a way that is referred to the Westerners..." Miao", meaning barbarians or simply, a cat.

As you also know all the Northern Asian race mention above speaks a Turkic language, very or so all related. This language has a huge influence on the northern hemisphere of China to as far as Anatolia-Turkey, Bulgaria-Hungary to Tatar Russia...the European front of the east. That means that these Turkic race are hugely a moving nomadic people that had been interconnected with merchants or empire of the West. In 1206 Chingis Khan, a great Mongolian warrior united the whole Turkic tribe of the Steppes, he set out to conquer China and the Middle East. He destroyed the Islamic kingdom in Baghdad, Iraq and conquered Moscow, Russia. His army fought Knights in Poland and Hungary. Today these European country still have influence from the Mongol invasions....Hungary in term by most in culture and some word terms. The whole Silk Road is open to West & East. Later as his four Empire splits the west one converted to Muslims. They lead huge transportation and direct trading from the west, this leads to the influence to why we may have been descendant of these merchant or traders. If you look closely, in tradition we dress in ways similar to that of the Persian-Arabic styles. With tons of coin decorations, colorful designs and a head turban like in India and a vest & pants like that of Alladin of Arabia. We love rectangle, square and triangle design while the Chinese love Calligraphy and rounder designs.

All this may not even be the fact that we became who we are but indeed it's interesting to review. Most importantly is the fact that we Hmong Families have blond haired, blue/greenish eyed descendant. What is amazing is that it's a permanent gene and all Hmong family has it even with no direct contact with any Europeans since around some 500 hundreds years ago. Despite the French colonization in South East Asia no Hmong were ever reported to marry, have affairs or impregnated by any Europeans. Even if some Hmong guys/girl married a European, the chance of the kids with permanent blond hair, blue/green eyes is very slight.

Look at import models and interracial kids these days with the daddy being Asian, mom being White, they are mixed directly and none even came close to having blond hair or blue/green eyes like us. Thai have the most influences from French and the most in interracial mix and hardly any of them maintain the blond hair/blue eye features. We aren't even mix, we're full Hmong from northern China and some of us looked like true whites. I say that because I have five blood related, full blooded Hmong cousins and they have beautiful blond hairs, although with just brown eyes. The genes in my uncle's family only runs for the girls though, not the for boys. My Dad's sis in Thailand had to gal with full blond too.

So who is South East Asia has more of this feature then Hmongs?....none. Period. So that means that this genes is far more complicated then the interracially mixed kids today. It may just be the exact genes like that of the Northern Asian race. In Mongolia to Kazakhstan, Siberia to the Yakuts region, you'll find many Asians featured the normal look but having blond hair or blue/greenish eyes. I don't know for sure that we are their descendant but I do know that we aren't Chinese and we have a muti-cultured influence.

I'm full blooded hmong.Born in Xiengkhuang, Laos. I have orange redish mustache(strange).Hmong people don't have that irish trait. My grandfather tells us that our hmong people long ago had green, blue, and hazel eyes people. They were easily distinguishable by the Chin(now called Chinese)people and were marked for extermination. I still have a living proof cousing about 65 now that has hazel eyes and pure bleached color hair and very light skin. We Vangs must have originated from somewhere in the vicinity of Denmark and Norway. I believed that those migrated to the asian countries got mixed up in the genetic coding by mariage.

Ole Jensen Vang of Denmark

Is anyone who visits this message board related to Ole Jensen Vang? He probably lived in the Madum parish of Ringkøbing county in Denmark, and was likely born a short time before 1872. My great grandfather, Jens Nielsen (James Ball in America) of Ballehus, Madum parish, Ringkøbing county, Denmark, refered to Ole in a letter written by Jens back to his parents in Denmark in 1886 (see below):

"I received a letter from Ole Jensen Vang on Jan 2nd (1886). I was very surprised as I could not understand who the letter was from until I saw his name on the letter. I was quite surprised to hear from him. It is hard to believe that it has been 13 years since I last saw him, so he is not a young boy any more."

Jens had emigrated to America in Dec 1872. I'd be thrilled to hear from anyone who may be related to the Ole refered to above.

Kind regards,
Richard Ball (rdball@hotmail.com)
State of Oregon
USA

As a young boy in the 1930s, my family visited Mattis Vang and his wife at their small farm near Starbuck, MN. I understood that we were related to one of them somehow. I have searched the Stjørdal and Hegra bygdebooks without success for the connection. I would like to establish contact with one of their descendants or someone who could provide further information about them.

Arnt and Mattis (Mathias) Vang of Minnesota

My great-grandpa, Arnt, and his brother, Mattis, came from Norway from the Velvangsoldra farm in county Nord Tondelag in the late 1890's. Arnt settled in Yellow Medicine County and Mattis in Starbuck, MN. There are many "Vang" farms [Velvang, Velvangsoldra, Vangberg, and many more] in the Stordal area near Trondheim. There is a great book, Stjordalsboka, published by the historical society of the area which traces the history and genealogy of each farm. They have this book, and many more, at the Norwegian American Historical Society at St.Olaf College in Minnesota. Their web address is: www.naha.stolaf.edu . Check it out!

She moved away in the mid 50's somewhere in Minnesota. She lived by the Geneva lake and we used to have school picnics in the spring at her parents farm when we were in grade school. Would like to get in touch with her and invite her to our next reunion. I assume she has a married name now but don't know what it would be. NOR
b. 10/4/1831, NOR
m. 6/4/1857, NOR
d. Jan. 1916, Barronett,WI

his parents:
Ole Pedersen (b. NOR)
Mari Hjella (b. NOR)

('Hjella' doesn't come up anywhere as either a last
name or a farm name, but Hjelle does. Therefore,
I don't have anymore info about her.)

Mattie Vang's parents moved to Black River Falls, WI (?)
between 1860 1865.
Thanks for the detailed info.
I don't think our Vangs are the same ones, although
since I was unable to find my Vangs in the 1865 census
(they probably moved to Wisconsin by then) it is
good to have your information in case mine, some how,
ends up erroneous.
fyi on the geography. If I remember correctly, Trondheim
is on the west coast northwest of the Gubrandsdalen area.
Gubrandsdalen is I believe a river valley "area", not a
town. Most of my relatives are from Ringebu, which is in that
area.
Thanks for replying.

surname Vang

The surname Vang has significanse in Denmark. It means glade or garden and was used in the first translation of the Bible to Danish as the Garden "vang" of Eden. The town of Vang on the Island of Bornholm has a very colorful history. I guess the purpose of these ramblings is that you may want to look, geneologically, beyond Norway.
I would be interested in your results if you have time, or a question, please give me an e-mail.
Sincerly
Freddy Vang

Marianne Vang

There is a possibility that my
great-grandfather may have been an uncle or
a relative of Marianne Vang. His name in
the US was Elling Fredrickson Wang (born in
Inderoy, Norway on Feb 25, 1844). He went
to work on a farm called Vang. I believe his
name Wang is derived from that farm name.
There were five Vang farms in the Inderoy
parish area at that time located as follows:
ovre (upper) Vang, nedre (lower) Vang,
Vangshaugen (Vang's hilltop), Asvang (Vang
ridge), and Vangshylla (Vang's rock shelf)
which faced the Trondheim Fjord. There was
also another Vang farm located about 60 miles
farther north called Vangen. I do not know
on which of these farms my great-grandfather
worked. I do not have any other information
about his life in Norway other than the
names of his parents (Fredrick Peterson and
Elizabeth Andreasdatter). I do not know how
many brothers and sisters he had. I am just
in the beginning stages of researching my
Wang (or Vang) ancestors. If you think
there is a family connection to Marianne
Vang, please email me at: rjensen@manta.
library.colostate.edu. Thanks,

Rebecca Jensen
