My grandfather was William Clarence Wolfe, son of Sherman and Emma Rosella Vangilder Wolfe. My mother was Dorothy May Wolfe, Williams daughter.
Renceliar was Elias Dann Wolf's stepson by way of his marriage to Hattie Johnson Vangilder. Renceliar's father was Jeremiah Vangilder.
I hadn't heard the story of him dieing in Panama of Malaria.
I would love to have copies of the Family Bible info! Could you please send them to me?
I have the census verifying Sarah and Hattie were sisters.
I also have Hattie being the second wife to both Jeremiah Vangilder and Elias...meaning half siblings everywhere. No, I don't have a death date for Jeremiah or Sarah Johnson. But looking at the census' and doing some comparisons you can figure out when he dissappeared. The same with Sarah.
In/re the Vangilders being instrumental in the starting of Ashton Ohio, I don't have any info regarding that.
Elias Dann Wolf was the son of William Wolf and Sarah Dann. William was the son of Michael Wolf.
In/re Your grandmother thinking we are related to General James Wolfe of the battle of Quebec, My mother said that too. I really don't think so....but I could be wrong.

Diane was a member of Van Gilder Cousins Research Club back in 2007. Maybe it's time to give all the cousins an update.

Jackie Harrington

My grandmother is the youngest daughter of Emma Rosella and Sherman...who are you related too? I have Renceliar in a census showing him Elias D. Wolfe's step-son. My grandmother said that he died from malaria building the Panama Canal...haven't been able to verify that yet. Never heard the shipwreck story though.

I have Emma Rosella's family Bible which lists all the kids and their death dates if you need them. My grandmother also said that Emma Rosella and Sherman were first cousins (which confirms your info). How did you verify Sarah and Hattie were sisters? I can only find info on Hatties folks and that's sketchy.

I also have Hattie being the second wife to both Jeremiah Vangilder and Elias...meaning half siblings everywhere. I don't even have a death date for Jeremiah or Sarah Johnson. Do you have any of those?

Have you been able to go any farther then Jeremiah/Hattie/Elias/Sarah (what a family saga :) )? I'm stuck on them... I saw something that said the Vangilders were instrument in the starting of Ashton Ohio, but haven't followed that lead yet...and I have no leads on the Johnsons, or Wolfe. My grandmother thinks we are related to General James Wolfe of the battle of Quebec but it would be distant because I don't believe General Wolfe had any kids (legitmate ones anyway). Any leads would be helpful!!

It's nice to find relatives. It really is a small world sometimes. Thank you for the info. Hopefully we can research this further.

Adelitia

Hi Adelita....I have your family! My great grandpa was Sherman Wolfe. He married Emma Rosella Vanguilder. His mother was Sarah(Johnson)Wolf, his father Elias Dann Wolf. Emma Rosella's mother was Hattie(Johnson)Vanguilder (and later Wolf). Hattie and Sarah were sisters. After Hattie's husband Jeremiah died and after Sarah died, Elias and she were married and had even more children! I've seen Rensalars name spelled several different ways. I can't find him in any census after he was a child. I was told that either he or his dad was killed in a shipwreck, but can't find any record of that either.....just the family story.

Hi,

I am currently researching my Grandmother’s genealogy and here’s what I have. My Grandmother's parents are Rosella Emma Vanguilder and Sherman Wolfe, Rosella’s parents are (as far as I can tell) Jeremiah Vanguilder and Hattie Johnson. Rosella also had a brother, Renssalaer (might be spelled wrong). According to my research, Hattie later married Elias D Wolfe.

Could anyone provide additional information regarding any of their parents? I'm completely stuck.

Thank you in advance!
Adelitia

John Van Guilder's father was a Wappinger chief named Awansous. His mother was a member of the Catskill band of Mohican Indians. His sister married Nimham, a Wappinger chief, which made him uncle to Daniel Nimham, the last Wappinger sachem and Patriot martyr killed during the American Revolution.
I have never found anything regarding a trial and sentence for hanging for John Van Gilder. The land dispute was not between a Mohican and the English. It was between Livingston's tenants and the Sheriff, who happened to be Livingston's brother-in-law. As a matter of fact, I suspect the charges were fabricated so that Livingston could get a hold of John's land rights for most of Putnam County. I wonder if white people are so eager to believe he was a murderer because he was Indian.
This was during the Seven Years' War, not the American Revolution. Sir William Johnson was trying to stop the Indians on the western frontier from attacking the European settlements. Nicholas Van Gilder went to that location to see if he could get help from the tribes there to get his father out of jail. This is documented in the Papers of Sir William Johnson.

I'm not sure if this is the Jacob Van Guilder you're looking for information on....but I am a descendant of Jacob Van Guilder, son of Andrew and Eleanor (Taylor) Van Guilder. Jacob was born in Egremont,Bekshire,Mass.abt. 1741 jacob's father Andrew may have had a brother named Jacob. Andrew was born abt. 1721 in Egremont. He married Maria Koerner/ Karner there. In 1791 Andrew moved his family to Georgia,Vermont and later to Milton,Vermont.Andrew was the son of John Van Guilder aka Toanunck and Maria Koerner/ Karner.John was half Dutch & half Mohican. His Dutch father may have been a fur trader and his Native American mother is believed to have been the daughter of a Mohican sachem (medicine man) and possibly he was a minor chief.Maria ,her brother Andrew and her parents were Palatine immigrants ( which later became part of Germany. Her parents were Nicholas Johann Koerner/ Karner ( spelled either way in records but clearly are the same individuals) and Anna Magdalena.
An interesting story concerning John aka Toanunck.....he was sent to jail in Albany,NY for shooting one of the sherriff's men during a land dispute between a fellow Mohican & the English. John was held in jail for a year and had been sentenced to be hung. However, the Revolutionary War was starting and the English wanted the Mohicans to side with them against the American patriots.....so they released John from prison.Ironically John & his sons joined the patriots not the English.
If this is the Jacob & his family you are seeking let me know and I can give you more information.
Noreen Maloney LaTour
Burlington,Vermont

I only know he was born in NY.

Curiously, I also have a shirt-tail link to the Orcutt name. My great grandfather's sister Mary Augusta Smith (1847-1883) married Sheldon Reid Orcutt (1842-1926). They had no children. Sheldon was born 1842 in NY, father Isaac Orcutt born 1806, MA. Do you know if your Orcutt's were Seventh Day Baptists?

Solomon had a daughter Annis b abt 1797, she married Daniel VanGuilder b abt 1792 (my ancestor's first wife, I descend from his second wife Mariah Orcutt). They stayed in Granville, NY area. As for the other children of Solomon, I do not yet have the names, but there was a daughter b abt 1799, another daughter b abt 1801, a son b abt 1803, and a son b abt 1805. One of the last two sons married Ruth Orcutt 1807-1895 and died about 1862. I have not researched the family as extensively as others, but know there is more to discover. I have not looked in the other VanGuilders of Ohio as of yet. There should be a connection.

I strongly suspect Solomon is the son of Solomon VanGilder born about 1770. He had six children by 1810 in Granville, NY at the time. One of them was Almira, born about 1797.

I am searching for the parents of Solomon Van Gilder who was born 1796 in NY, migrated to Ohio, married Eliza Vantine on 20 Sep 1818 in Huron OH. They had 5 daughters: Sarah Ann, b 1819, Jane D b 1828 and Clarinda b 1832 plus two who apparently died young. Eliza died 19 June 1841 in Peru, OH and Solomon died 14 Jan 1883 and is buried in Scotch Ridge, Wood Co, OH. Daughter Sarah Ann married Crandall Lovelace Hodges and their children were Edward, Augusta, Franklin, Ella and Florence. Jane married Alanson Stevens. Their children were Ann, Orpha, Fannie, Charles, Alanson and Grant. Clarinda (my 2nd great grandmother) married Adam Hinds. Their children were Frank and Charles. I would love to hear from descendants of this family.

Hi!
I have done a little work on my husband's family which includes your Vangilders. John Franklin & Sarah Masterson Vangilder's children were Mary, William J., Eleanor Ellen, Margaret, Elizabeth, James,Francis Marion, Sarah Ann, & John Francis. Francis Marion (our direct link) married Susan Lape 28 Jul 1861. I find a death certificate & cemetery for Susan but can find no date of death, cemetery, etc. for Francis Marion. Would you by chance have any info on him? Any help appreciated. Contact me at dot.plumb@yahoo.com if you have more on him.

Thanks Dale! I am trying to put together the VanGilder family in Granville. I am descended from Stephen VanGilder and I am trying to put together his family with real records like wills etc. I have lots of info, but want some proof. Do you have any idea who the wife of Stephen VanGilder (b.abt 1763) is? I have that it could be Rhoda Taylor, yet in the 1850 census there is an Esther Taylor living with him. Perhaps she is his sister in law....
One interesting thing that I didn't realize was significant until you responded- John's wife in the will is named as Patty (the letter T's are clearly written) first and then later in the document as Polly (definitely not the letter T). Strange, huh?
Thanks again!

This John VanGilder married Patty (Polly) VanGilder 16 December 1819 in Pawlet VT, she was the daughter of Daniel VanGilder and Ruth Youngs. John was the son of Rueben Farnsworth VanGilder, grandson of Jacob VanGilder. John and Polly may have had a daughter that died as a teenager. John's sister was Nancy VanGilder who married James VanGilder.
Dale McKinley

The will mentions wife Polly, nephew Lorenzo son of James and Nancy, brother David and brother Reuben. Anyone know where this John fits in the VanGilder family?

Hmm, the only wife I was aquainted with was Mary Ann Van Gilder Fraker and she died in 1919. Marion Fraker died 1921. They were married for 64 years. And even in death are still together as both are resideing beside each other in the quiet grounds of the Evergreen Cemetery at Colorado Springs, Colorado.,,,parcial quote from Anderson County Kansas Family Stories and History.
