Clarissa, Rachel and Asenath Varney of Warren County, NY

Greetings,

I’m seeking information on the following Varneys of Warren County, New York whom I’ve come across in my research, but haven’t been able to place them in the family tree. Hopefully someone out there can help me figure out who they are.

Clarissa Varney – On 31 Jan 1822, she was disowned from the Queensbury Monthly Meeting for “unchaste conduct”. This is the only reference I’ve found of her. She was referred to by name in the women’s meeting minutes in the months leading up to the disownment. She’s not the daughter of Nathaniel Varney and Mary Southwick. Nathaniel was granted several certificates which listed the names of their children, but a Clarissa was never listed. Is it possible that she is the daughter of Josiah Varney and Lydia Brown? There are 2 unaccounted for female children living with Josiah and Lydia in the 1810 and 1820 censuses. Does anyone have evidence as to who she is or know any vital information (birth, death, marriage, etc)?

Rachel (Varney) Ball – (1782-1836). Married Marlboro Ball of Luzerne, NY. She was received by request (converted) at the Queensbury Monthly Meeting 1 Apr 1813. Her documented birth date (per her headstone in Hartman Hill Cemetery) is 4 years before Josiah’s arrival (reception on certificate) in Queensbury and his 1786 marriage to Lydia. Rachel was never listed on any of the certificates of Nathaniel, unlike all of his other children. If Josiah or Nathaniel aren’t her father, then who is she and where did she come from?

Asenath Varney – I found Asenath’s name in the Warren County index of deeds. She bought a piece of land circa 1832. That’s the only information I have at this point until I see the actual deed. The only Asenath Varney I can locate is the wife of Joseph Varney (son of Abner, grandson of Nathaniel), but she didn’t marry Joseph until 1841 and lived in Portville, Cattaraugus, NY. Is she a daughter of Josiah and Lydia?

Thanks for any help!

Tim
Albany, NY

My family is from Logan County and all through that area. And like the majority of the Varney's...digging up any family info is a real pain. I have always been told we were related to Jim, and people even tell me they can see the resemblance in me and my dad...I don't really see it...but it would be nice to trace my family's tree.

Thank you Sue. I do not have much information and have been watching the posts earnestly to see if I can pick up on something, no matter how small.

I did find the following; Joshua Brooks Varney b:31 Dec 1799 in Kittery/Eloit, York Co., ME. Father Elijah Varney--B; 28 Aug 1775 also in Kittery/Eliot. Mother Anne (or Anna) Brooks--b: 14 Apr 1778 in Kittery/Eliot, ME. Married 3 Dec 1799. Siblings: Lydia, William and Abigail (twins?)

It goes on with Elijah's father, Peter Varney, B: 11 Feb 1765 and married to Mehitable. Sibling is William

My mother-in-law was Marjorie Ortmann Haan. Her mother was Myrtle Leone Strong. Grandmother was Edna Varney Strong (Albert) and Edna's mother was Emma (Emogene) Crawford Varney (Sylvester). All resided their later years in South Dakota. Edna and Albert are buried in McCook County, SD. Maybe later on, more information will be forthcoming. Does this help or answer any questions? Keep in touch. Francine Haan

I have some information on the family after coming to South Dakota as far as descendants. My husbands mother has the Varney line in her background. Sadly, she died and any information I might have gotten from her is gone now too.
I would appreciate any and all information that might get me headed in the right direction. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

April I'm thinking that Papaw Ken died in the ARH hospital which would have made it Kentucky. I can ask Mom the next time I talk with her and I'll let you know. I've not heard anything about Vicie being divorced, but maybe that's why no one wants to talk about this. At one time, divorce was a terrible thing in our part of the world. Keep us posted what you learn. Geneva

Priscilla, I am Ken's youngest granddaughter, April. My father was William G (Buster) Varney, who was the oldest son of Ken's. On your grandfather's death certificate, Thomas is listed as his father and the information was provided by a Mrs. LT Copley. Do you know who Mrs. LT Copley is? I assumed that it was a family member, but wasn't able to confirm. I don't know any of Leonard's family (except you now), so really didn't know who to call. I did run across some information that showed Grandma Vicey as being divorced, so think there may be more to the story. I'm going to be in Pike County the week of Labor Day, so I'll go to the courthouse and see what I can find out. It may be Mingo County courthouse that I need to go to though, as both Paw Ken and Uncle Jim may have passed away in Mingo County. I remember when Paw Ken died, but cannot remember which state. I am excited to hear from you. Which one of Leonard's children is your parent? My personal email address is parrigin@comcast.net if you want to communicate. So good to hear from you!

I was referring to the post about Alex Varney and his children, my siblings. The author said he was married to one of the siblings' daughters. I can't figure out who that would be. Were you the author that named the 6 of us girls and my 3 brothers? If so, the girl younger than me is named Loretta, instead of Rhetta, that was a nickname.

Info Needed - Vicey Varney married to Thomas Varney (Pike County, KY)

I am looking for information on Thomas Varney possibly of Pike County, KY or Mingo County, WV. I am researching the possibility that Thomas was married to Vicey Varney (5/4/1869 - 6/2/1949), the youngest daughter of Artellias Madison Varney and Piety Staton Varney. Vicey Varney married Johnson McCoy (1860-1944) of Pike County, KY in 1896. Vicey had three sons prior to her marriage to Johnson McCoy that I am aware of: Leonard Jennings Varney (1888-1950), James Forest Varney (1889-1950) and Ken Lee Varney (1892-1969). Leonard Jennings Varney's death certificate shows father as Thomas Varney. I have not been able to locate a death certificate for James Forest Varney to x-reference the father information. Any information that you can pass onto me will be appreciated.

Hello - I would like to find the obituary of Fred L. Varney who died in Riverside, California. The death index lists only Riverside and I'm hoping it is Riverside, Riverside County, California.

Fred was born 10 Jul 1873 in Lowell, Maine and his parents were Jedidiah and Mary J. Cummings Varney.

He married in 1909 to Flora A. Gilbert. He may have married again in 1930 - unsure on this.
He was a Medical Doctor and he died 02 Jun 1961.

Any assistance with this obituary would be much appreciated. Thank you! Sue Manz Graham suemanz.graham@comcast.net
Thank you very much for the information. It actually explains an event that happened to my Aunt Michelle several years ago. She was visiting my great grandparents grave and a woman came up to her and asked who she was. She explained that she was Carroll and Marion Varney's granddaughter. The woman, who must have been Clara responded that she was the only real Varney. My Aunt didn't know what to say, no one had ever mentioned anything about Carroll being illegitimate, just that his mother dumped him with relatives. I know that Carrol Varney was my great grand father, but if what you say is true, I may never know anything about his paternal family. Thanks again, I may have more questions in the future. If I can help you in return don't hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Katie Treamer

Katie,
It is nice to hear from you! I always like to get to know new relations.
I'm going to tell you what I have been told about Nolan Varney. This comes from Clara Varney, Carroll and Robert's sister. She is still living in NH. Lucy and Nolan were both working for a man that was married. He got Lucy pregnant and paid Nolan to marry her. He did and they were married for a few years, during which time she had the three children. As far as Clara knows, she is the only child that was actually Nolan's. Robert was not raised with his mother's parents like Carroll and Clara were. He was born with medical problems and Lucy left him to be a ward of the state. He was taken in by the Remick family as a foster child. Robert never met Nolan, though he was pointed out to him at one time. He had some contact with Lucy but not much. As far as I know, he never met Carroll and only met Clara as an adult.
I hope this is some help to you. I know I was very disappointed that I couldn't confirm who my great grandfather was. I have thought about having DNA tests done, but I'm not even sure if that would help. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Deborah Salyers
