Info on James William Vassar from New York

I am trying to find any info I can on my Grandfather, James William Vassar, Sr. I am told he was from or at some time lived in Jericho, NY and was born about 1916. He was supposed to have at some point been a jockey and was in Charles Town WV racing when he met my Grandmother Louise Lawson. We are unsure if my Grandfather ever knew he had a son, as my father was not raised by his biological parents and never met his father. Any info anyone out there could provide would help me a great deal.

Michelle

Re: Maude Vassar

My great Aunt was Annie Maude Vassar born to Ella and Samuel Vassar/Vassor, her brother.. my grandfather was Samuel VassarIII.. there were four children all together Amie, Maude, Mary and Samuel III.... although she was from NC, and we are primarily considered African American I keep finding Native American reference of Vassars in Oklahoma and strecthing across the country through the Carolinas from the trail of tears and the french Indian wars... I am branching out of NC because so little info could be found regarding the Vassars in NC I can only assume they were not from there but with very few surviving members left in my family... history is sparse. Might your family have Native American roots that you can recall? I am focusing on Native American roots because I have noticed that far too little actual genetic links can be found outside of the native American lines because of the slave trade and the adoption of surnames based solely on plantation owner names and not on blood line... however my historic family plantation name is not Vassar, I still find more leads sticking to the Native American vassars only due to poor record keeping and lack of plantations owners to claim their mulatto children. bear in mind that your current race is not an indication. Native Americans especially in the South were labelled as everything from Non-free whites, to mulattos, to blacks to savages... and many were slaves on plantations and did marry and mix. and others did not so much. I think that Maude is an unusual name and I did hear once that my Annie Maude was indeed named for someone else in her family.... Maybe there is a link... I'd be interested to find out. thanks

Hello James.. I was wondering if you could help... My family has three samuel T vassars... the III being my grandfather.. He was born in North Carolina.. he died a while ago.. however I have not found much info on the ANY Vassars living in NC past or present before my Grandfather.. but I know they must have... I have heard several accounts.. and I know we have Native American heritage but whether this is through the Vassar line.. (Often written Vassor) or another line in my family is unclear because apparently there were Vassars in the Native Americans who survived the trail of tears. Hope you can help... who is your Samuel Vassar related to? If he or your family is not my relative and of either Native/Mulatto or mixed heritage, is it possible that your Samuel Vassar or his kin owned plantations? In North Carolina, Native Americans and Blacks were slaves and took the names of plantation owners. Thanks Hope to hear from you soon.

Just curious if any one of you have any family roots in North Carolina??? I have been told I have Cherokee heritage however it has also been said Lumbee, and because records referred to native Americans in many incorrect distinctions I have not set the origin in stone But it is good to see that there are other Vassars with Native American heritage because Vassar is not a very common name let alone amongst Native Americans. My Grandfather was Samuel T Vassar III.. but before him, little else is known of the Vassars which indicates to me that they must not have been from North Carolina since most families can trace their lines back futher and noone mentions or recalls Vassars in their families before then and being a III there were obviously other Samuel Vassars. Ransom is a name that links with my family and they also have native American roots from North carolina.. but no info on the Vassars. I believe there has to be a connection because Vassar is not a traditional Native name for certain but especially in the Southern region of the USA Native Americans were placed as slaves on plantations and labelled as either Mulattoes, or non free whites. They weer even listed as Black in some records even the ones who were not of mixed heritage though man did mix. I would appreciate any information anyone may have.

Hi Lisa... Would you happen to know if any of the Vassars in your family ever moved to North Carolina? There are three Samuel T. Vassars in my family (No nestors)... but for some reason no information could be found on any other Vassar before my Grandfather... (who was the III)... So i can only assume they were not originally from NC because that area and county were so rural that many and most families trace their lines back almost 200 years with no problems in the same area but in my case there is literally no history prior to my Grandfather except that he is the III Samuel Vassar and His mother's name was Ella and she married Samuel Vassar II I assume.

My Grandfather was Samuel T. VassarIII.. brother of Mary and Emma Vassar... children of Ella Wyche Vassar/Vassor and Samuel T, Vassar.

"Mary Wyche , never married but she had three children: Ella (Wyche) Vassor (whose father is said to be her mother's cousin, Samuel Ransom), Willis "Buddy" Wyche (whose father is unknown to us) and Amie (Wyche) Mitchell - Grandma ! Grandma's father is Dr. Lewis. Mary's son, Willis died at a young age on a train that ran between Seaboard and Gumberry, NC. Mary's daughter, Ella, married Samuel Thomas Vassor and had four children: Mary (Vassor) Bowser Green, Emma B. (Vassor) Peebles (born on September 1, 1915), Maude (Vassor) Belfield and Dr. Samuel T. Vassor, III. Emma married Allen Major Peebles and had two sons: Allen Jr. and Frederick B. Peebles). Ella's daughter, Mary married Samuel Bowser and had at least two children: Samuel (Sam) and Vivian (Bowser) Floyd. Mary's daughter, Amie married Charlie Robert Mitchell and had 13 children"

Of the four children born to Ella and Samuel Vassar only Mary is still alive I believe... She resides in NC still.. and she is a lovely woman I personally was raised by Maude... it is uncanny how much they look alike. I have found little about the Vassars. however the wyche (their mother's family line has more info which I found on http://www.mitchellplace.org/wyche_history.htm Hope this helps. I do not know a Virginia or janet... but I'm young... so I don't know many names from my family. If these are the Vassars you seek well I cant tell you much about the past but the present line is doing well with my two brothers and their beautiful sons.

Adopted in June 1961 by a wonderful family, Stan and Hazel Clark, in the Spokane valley, I lived at 11121 E. Boone. The proceedings were held in secret in the chambers of Judge Willard J. Roe in Spokane. I was born "Edward Gladeau" Dec. 18, 1958. My name is Alan N. Clark. Hazel spoke once of a sister that died from a car accident. There's not much else I know or asked about. I would like to find out more about my biological parents.

Hey there,

If you haven't found him already, there was a William H. Vasser who lived in Aberdeen, MS. HE had a plantation and was considered a "gentleman" farmer. He was also state treasurer for a while and busy in politics after the Civil War.

There is also an EJ Vasser in Monroe County on the 1860 census that was listed as a lawyer and a Elijah H. Vasser who was born in Halifax Cty, Va, moved to Limestone Cty., AL in the year 1839 and then to Monroe County, MS in the Winter of 1845. He is buried in Old Aberdeen cemetery. Here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/findagrave-Elijah-H-Vasser
Hope that helps you guys.

If you guys know of any Allens or Faulkners in your family trees would you let me know? I am looking for a connection that happened in either AL or VA.

Thanks,
Shannon
Nicholas Donald Vassar

For over 25 years my mother and I have been trying to find information about my grandfather. My father never knew his father but according to the marriage certificate my father's parent's, Nicholas Donald Vassar and Florence Emmeline Jarvis were married on 24 June 1925 in Flushing, NY. Two witnesses to the marriage were Mabel E. Vassar and Mabel Vassar. My father was born the following year. Sometime after June 1926, Nicholas left, and in March of 1930, Florence got a divorce. One of my father's aunt's thought that Mabel Vassar might have been Nicholas' sister, and the Mabel E. Vassar was his mother. I have confirmed through old church records where the marriage took place that Mabel E. was his mother and John was his father. My fathers birth record says that Nicholas was born in Delaware. Otherwise I have been unable to locate any other information about my grandfather and his family. My father is elderly now and would love to know something about his family, so if anyone working on a Vassar family, has run across any of these names, I would really love to hear from you.

Thanks, Karen
We have not been able to trace further back and I am looking for links. I believe they went to canada from England but not sure. I DO KNOW THAT YOUR DAD, DIED IN NEW YORK CITY, BECAUSE MY FATHER, BENJAMIN F. VASSAR, WENT TO TO IDENTIFY HIS BODY, I BELIEVE HE HAD BEEN KILLED. I WAS TO YOUNG TO REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. I WAS ADOPTED SO THAT IS WHY MY NAME IS NOT VASSAR ANY MORE. I NEVER KNEW THAT MY UNCLE EDWARD HAD ANY CHILDREN. HE DID HOWEVER HAVE SEVERAL BROTHERS, JAMES, JOHN, RAYMOND, BENJAMIN, AND A COUPLE OF SISTERS AS WELL, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER THIER NAMES.

Let me see if I have this correct. Levi, John and Joshua were brothers, right? Also, was there father the same Joshua Vassar listed in the 1850 census as being born in 1773\77 in the state of North Carolina?

The above is the conclusion that I have.

Question, who is the father of Joshua Vassar B. 1777 in North Carolina? From what I can determine, the Vassars in North Carolina descend from the Amelia County, Va. Vassars who descend from John Vassar of 1675. Am I correct in this conclusion and if so, how does Joshua 0f 1777 connect?

This seems to be my missing link. Can anyone help?

Gene Key

Elbert census for Nancy placed her as 4 y/o- page/line 375/178 (I may have page and line reversed). If you have any other info regarding Nancy's parents I would appreciate your sharing it with me.
Hi Shannon - would love the pictures. Just send them to kesjg@yahoo.com. (you are welcome to contact me at any time).

I do have a question on Charles Vassar -known to us as "Old Drag". (never married) He was born about 1871 to Peter Jackson and Matilda(?)Vassar and is a brother to George W. Vassar. In fact he was raised by George and Bess after his parents died. I know he lived in the Walthill area in later years but so far have not found a death date or place. Probably died in late 1950's or early 6o's. May have been buried in the Walthill, NE cemetery.

Also, would you happen to know Matilda's last name? I have her born about 1835 in Ohio and died after 1870. Peter b. Mar 1829, Pulaski, KY, d. after 1880. (Richardson Co., NE) I do not know where they were buried. The 1880 NE. census has Peter married to "Elizabeth" - second wife.

Thanks for your help.
Janice

Hi Janice,

Thank you for sending some more info on the Vassars. Alot of it was very similar to the history I have. I only found only a few differences. Truth Vassar, my great grandma, married 3 times. Alvin Ring, my great grandpa, with whom she had Oma <-she is my gr-aunt, Connie (my grandma), Stanley, Joan, and Don. Truth also married Carl Palmer with whom she had Rick, and she also married a man named Art Bratt.

Also, you mentioned an Evergreen Cementary in Lyons. I know there is also an Evergreen Cementary in Walthill in Thurston County, where the Rings settled. I only know this, cause I lived there for alot of my life.

I will look into the Sarah Davis thing in my files and see if I have anything on that, and I'll let you know.

My connection to the Vassar family is through my great great grandfather James W. Kessinger. He married Elizabeth (Bess) Vassar (b. 22 Mar 1859-daughter of Nicholas Sherman and Sarah (Burgess) Vassar). They married in Holt County, MO. abt 1874. Moved to Richardson Co., NE in late 1870's. Elizabeth and James divorced 10 May 1883. Elizabeth married her cousin George W. (son of Peter Jackson and Matilda (?) Vassar) 2 Jul 1883, Richardson Co., NE. George and Elizabeth moved to Abline, KS area about 1906 where they remained and are buried in the Abiline Cemetery. George d. 8 Feb 1930 and Elizabeth d. 7 Mar 1938.

Elizabeth's sister Fanny married her cousin(and brother of George W.) Samuel (Sam) Vassar 16 May 1881, Falls Ciy, Richardson Co., NE. Samuel d.20 Mar 1938 and Fanny 9 Feb. 1945. They lived in Thurston Co. NE in the Walthill area but are buried in the Lyons Ne. -Evergreen Cemetery.

Nicholas Sherman Vassar b. abt 1828 in MO., d. 3 May 1906, Thurston Co., buried Everygreen Cemetery, Lyons, NE. Sarah (Burgess) b.6 Jul 1823, OH., d.16 Mar 1905, bu. Harris Cemetery, Richardson Co., Barada, NE.

Chilldren of Nicholas and Sarah:
Melvina b.abt 1848
Sarah Ellen b.abt 1852
Lizzie J. b.abt 1856
Fanny Jeanette b.abt 25 Feb 1866
William b.abt 1870

I have a question - I have proof that Nicholas married Sarah Burgess 13 April 1848 in Wapello Co., IA. But on his daughter Elizabeth's (Bess) death certificate it list Sarah DAVIS not Burgess as her mother. Can anyone clear that up?

As for Truth R Vassar (b. 12 Apr 1902). She married Alvin Ring, they had children: Joan, Omar, Stanley and Connie. She then married Carl Pratt Palmer and they had a son Rick. All I know abt Truth at this time.

Hope this helps.
Janice

Re: Linzel Noel Vassar

I was just going through Ancestry.com and saw your post about Linzel Noel Vassar. He was my Great Uncle and first married I believe to Beulah but I have only known his second wife (Aunt)Etta of Ponca City Oklahoma (still a vibrant active woman well into her 80's! Linzel was brother to my grandfather Oroville Edward Vassar. They used their middle names to make my father's name Edward Noel Vassar, and I am Edward Noel Vassar II. I noticed their was a reply from Phil Jobe, he is my cousin, my second cousin, the grandson of my father's sister Norma Vassar Jobe who now lives in Butler , Mossouri. By the way there were four kids from Ethel and Oroville: Norma-Kenneth-Ronnie and Edward. Ronnie is deceased but had 3 kids:Robin, Kimberly(Kim) and Anthony(Tony).
Linzel and Orville also had a sister Lorraine who lived most if her life in Reno I believe and a younger brother brother named Arthur who lived in north-central California. I don't know that Lorraine was married but Arthur married a German woman named Gert.
Anyway, I know it was a long time you posted that request, but I just stumbled accrossed it.
If you're still curious, I have the entire Vassar history and what I don't know, My dad certainly does.
Hope that helps.
Eddie Vassar
