Not sure if they are related, but my father's family came over from Catania, Sicily in the late 1890's Their name was changed from Vasta to West. I am working on the family tree and am interested to see what I can find anything on their family in Sicily. All of the siblings have passed on so this will be a difficult task.

Vasta family - English connection?

I have a will of my great great aunt Rosa Blanche Adams (nee Marchant)who died in England in 1941. Her will mentions 7 children of Millicent Vasta her sister - including Eva Miller, Louis Vasta, Lilian Porter, Fedora Vasta, Bertha Vasta and Kenneth Evans (the latter called a child of Rosa's, so perhaps adopted by Millicent?) Also mentioned are Guy and Athol Vasta, sons of Ivan Vasta. Family tradition says the Vastas went to New Zealand, but I know nothing else, apart from finding a couple of passenger records. Would love to find out more, make contact wih relatives or discover photographs. I presume the name is Italian in origin?

David Marchant

Monica, I may be your cousin. My mother was Lena Vasta. my grandparents were Gregorio and Maria Vasta (Cantafio) they came to America from southern Italy. Maria was from Nicastro and Gregorio from Sicily. There oldest son Michael had been left in Italy. A son Anthony was born in Italy and came to America - New York City with them. My mother was born in 1914, then there was Frank, Isidore, Gloria, Michael (was killed in a truck accident as a youngster), Conchetta (Connie) and Josephine was the youngest. I will be in Cantania Sicily from March 5 thru 12th, 2009 and would certainly like to speak with you. What a coincidence. How can I reach you? dbaresich@att.net

Hi Angelo,

I am looking for anyone who might be my relative. My father's name was George Gusto Vasta-child of Anthony Vasta
and Margaret Schmidt born in 417 east 103 st New York City on 7/21/1928. He was baptized 8/6/28 at St. Lucy's Church 344 East 104th street New York, New York. The sponsors of his baptism were Carl Schmidt and Providence Vasta. Are you or Michele and Bernadetta Vasta related to Anthony or Providence Vasta? My father later changed his name to George Christman after his step father Walter Christman.

Hi - I am Rita and your message had information that might help us both. My dad's mom Giuseppina (Josephine) Vasta was born in 1885 in Catania Sicily. She came to the USA about 1900's when she married her second husband Giuseppe (Joseph) Spano. Her father's name is Matthew Vasta and her mother's name is Santa Scionti. I believe her mother had aleast one sister and not sure about her dad's side. I have some more information but not much but if this helps and you can fit the pieces together that you have, please let me know so we can compare the rest of the information. My dad's stepsister's are all gone from his dad's side and his two half brothers on his mothers side have passed as well but they did not have any information. Keep in touch would like to see if we can connect. Thank you for what you did have. Later.

Vasta family

One portion of the Vasta family moved from Catania, Sicily and after coming through Ellis Island, settled in Harlem. They eventually migrated to North Arlington, NJ. Somewhere along the line, the name was changed to Vasto for this branch.

Details on this are sketchy. One surviving brother of the man who made the name change said the name was changed either because 1.) it was changed at Ellis Island due to clerical error 2.) the name was repeatedly mispelled on bills and the such and finally they just changed the name to Vasto or 3.) to sound more "American."

Most of that part of the Vasta family still lives in the North Arlington, NJ area.

My great grandfather was named Joesph (Giuseppe) Vasta. I know very little about this side of my family and would be intereted in locating any possible relatives that may be out there. My Great Grandfather and his wife Liboria Cacciatura Vasta had 9 Children my Paternal Grandmother being the oldest ( I believe). My Great Grandmother died in 1917. My paternal Grandmother was already married, but my Great Granfather took the rest of the children and moved to Trenton, New Jersey. That is the extent of my knowledge other then I have met some of my Grandmother siblings over the years, but they have all passed on and so I do not have that resourse to use in my search. Some of the childrens names were Sarah, Millie, Joe, Louise and my Grandmother Minnie.
vasta & vastag is there any connection

My research into the vasta name is showing me there are links to the former Yugoslavia and Hungry. I know that my family comes from Foggia & Casserta in Italy, and they moved to Sicily later. I am finding the spelling of the surname Vastag to be of Hungarian origin. Can anyone tell me if they have found some evidence or ideas as to if these surnames are connected.

When in Eastern Sicily in 1968 on a family vacation, visting the old family town of San Alfio in the Province of Catania, I distinctly remeber being very impressed by the fact that roughly 1/3 of all the names on the gravestones in the town cemetary were Vasta, a very memorable fact when you're 17 years old! My grandfather's first name was also Alfio, named after the Patron Saint of his hometown.
