Thank you! I'm glad you like our NHA website. I hope it's a help to researchers.

The Veeder question is still up in the air. We found a log in another repository that stated that he was terminated and married a local Tahitian woman, so we were hoping for more information about his death or issue.

Have you checked the Nantucket Historical Association website? nha.org It has quite a bit about the Veeder family including portraits of Capt. Charles Veeder. If this is your Charles Veeder, his parents were Peter P. Veeder and Rachael Allen. When you go to the site, click on Search All Collections, but also check the Barney Record and the Audio History Collection. Hope this is a help. AMNORC

I have a connection to this Veeder. His brother, David Veeder, is my ancestor. Their father, Peter P Veeder, moved the family to Greece, NY. Peter's children were all grown at the time of the move, but all chose to accompany, except Charles. I have articles on Peter Veeder in Rochester, NY but nothing about Charles.

I have found many sources that say Peter Veeder was born 2 Feb 1780 on Nantucket, but have been unable to locate his parents. I would appreciate any help that anyone might have on this branch of the Veeder family. I was also wondering if they were perhaps related to the Simon Volkertse Veeder family.

found your listing as a fellow DeWitt researcher and this is the only way I could find to contact you. My Dewitts are from the Marbletown area. Do you have any information you could share on an Andries, b. ~1800, married Jannetje, son Cornelius Hardenburg DeWitt, b.1839 in Marbletown.

Charles Veeder, Nantucket Whaling Captain, death in Tahiti, 1872

I am trying to solve a mystery. We (the Nantucket Historical Association) have a log kept by Susan Veeder on the Nauticon; we all love her story, and when someone asked when her husband, whaling Capt. Charles Veeder, died, we investigated. We have found that he left his ship (the William Gifford) in Tahiti (probably Papeete, since the US consul came on board), in May 1872. The consul wrote that Veeder "will remain at one of these islands with the native woman whom he had on board the vessel as his mistress." Since the ship's log records Veeder as "doing her laundry," he must have been in love.

But what happened to Veeder? We know he died in 1878 in the "Society Islands."

Would anyone have information or leads on other places to search? He's not mentioned in the Whalemen's shipping list. Is there a historical society or cemetery inscription project down there? I keep thinking there's probably more information someplace, if I just knew who to ask.

Thanks!

Local Family Gave Name to Calif. Mount
The Veeder family name which came to Schenectady County with the Dutch settlers has also made Its way across the country to California.

Mt. Veeder, a mountain rising above the lowlands, of California's Nape valley received, its name from Peter Vrooman Veeder, a Schenectady native and Union College graduate, class of 1846.
Veeder was born in the Woestina, "the wilderness" of Schenectady County, in 1824. Ordained a minister, he made his way to California in the wake of Gold Rush emigrants and eventually became a Presbyterian minister in Napa.
The young minister spent much time climbing on the valley's favorite mountain, which had no name and was generally' referred to as "the one, next to Mt. St. Helena.

Veeder became, the first white man to ascend the top of the mountain which the valley people then began calling Veeder's mountain or Mt. Veeder. In time the name was given official recognition.

Taken from Schenectady Newspaper no date but should be around 1910 - 1930

Sarah CHILDS m. Gerrit VEEDER - resided Lyons, Wayne Co., NY

Sarah Childs Veeder raised my g-grandfather (Dr. Major Alber Veeder) and then lived with him and his family after her husband died. M A Veeder was a physician in Lyons NY, and Sarah was technicially his great-aunt. After M A Veeder was born in 1848 his mother died shortly thereafter and M A was moved to his great-uncle's (Gerrit Veeder's) house. In the 1850 census Gerrit Veeder, 58, is head of the household with his wife Mary, 50, and Major A Veeder age 2 and Sarah Childs age 24 in residence. She might have been a nurse or nanny. Mary Veeder died 2 years later and Gerrit married Sarah Childs. In the 1860 census Gerrit is 68 and Sarah Veeder is 34 and M A Veeder is 11. Gerrit is spelled incorrectly in that census, so search on Major Veeder to find it. I am not aware of any children of Gerrit and Sarah. In the 1900 census Sarah Veeder is 73 and living in Lyons, NY with Major A Veeder and his family, including my grandfather. Feel free to e-mail at tveeder@rochester.rr.com.
