Re: Willie (William E)...I believe his wife Lydia M. Harper died in Terre Haute, Ind (Vigo County) on 2-9-1896. They had at least one daughter Gladys who ended up in California. I will contact some family out there when time allows. My father was the son of Willie from his second wife. Margarette (also Margaret) Hinck Korte. Margaret is listed as coming from Germany (Hamburg?)born 1875. I am unsure when Willie and Margaret were married. Do have the 1920 census records from William E. Vermillion Douglas County, IL. Showing William E age 54, Margarett age 44, Lewis E Vermillion age 19 (called Dutch, he married a Mary, had 5 daughters and lived in Pekin,IL). William H Vermillion age 15 (Married Dorothy Harter, had 3 sons and a daughter, lived in Brookfield, Ill), Henry Gordon Vermillion age 13 (my father, married Ruth Harter (Dorothy mentioned above sister) and had 2 sons and a daughter (me) and lived in Oak Forest, IL.) Henry Gordon changed his name to Gordon Henry at some point. Geneva Vermillion age 9 married a William Nicholson and had 3 or 4 children in Indiana, and Clause W. Vermillion (went by Pete) married and moved to California. I think he had a son and a daughter. All of this generation is now deceased. Some of Willie's grandchildren have passed, there are many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. Margaret and William's gravestones are part of the gravestone photography project, Arthur, IL.

Hi Linda,
I'm not familiar with the book published by the Ramsey family but would love a copy if its available. My mom and her siblings are the only other decendants of Oliver that I know of. I don't know Cleveland's daughter or grandchildren if he had any. James Leonard (Oliver and Mary Jane's son) is my great grandfather. I've posted most of the pictures I have but have a few pictures that I can't identify the people in them and have sent copies to Doug Vermillion and he was unable to identify them also. Anyone specifically you are looking for photos of?

Hi,
My name is Denise Summit, Oliver Hess was my Great Great Grandfather. I have some pictures that I believe to be of Oliver Hess and Mary Jane or they could be of his brother Charles and his wife Samantha. I'm having trouble figuring out who they may be since they are not labeled. My great grandfather is James L. Vermillion and my grandfather is William Vermillion, my mother Margaret Ellen Vermillion (Ruehrmund). I've read some of your info on Giles Vermillion, very interesting! Any info you have to share would be greatly appreciated! I'm new to ancestry.com so I just came across your post.
What was the name of Maggie & Frost's son....was it Wendell? I was related to her while she was married to Herb Heavin. I remember visiting her and enjoyed being around her..she was great. She married Herb after his wife, Loda May Hurst Heavin, died. We are trying to figure out if Frost and Loda May were brother & sister (which would have made Maggie Herb's sister-in-law by marriage)? Loda May's parents were Pleasant & Ellen Woods Hurst. Loda May Hurst Heavin (my Great Grandmother)died in 1939 and we know nothing about her and have never seen a picture of her. She died of the hereditary Polycystic Kidney Disease of which their only child, Pleasent Elijah Heavin (my Grandfather) died of and my father, Bill Heavin (an only child) died of, but it runs thru the Hurst side of the family. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. ehchambers@yahoo.com

I am sorry but I do not know much about this family or the marriage between Maggie and Herb. I believe you need to re-post this query under jammarble's posting as that is the person with apparent knowledge of your Maggie Hill Hurst. I wish I could be more helpful, but my focus is Vermillion genealogy and I have yet to document a connection between Maggie Hill Hurst and an "Oat Vermillion."

I know this isn't kosher but here goes anyway.
My father was Gary Vermillion. He was likely born sometime between 1950 and 1960. He would have lived in or around Quincy, IL in the mid-1980s and during that time would have dated my mother, Suzi Hancox.
I have no idea where he is now, or if he is even alive, and I post this here out of desperation with no other ideas. I have scoured the Internet and cannot afford a private detective. I have no other information on him, though his middle initial might be L.
I posted something similar to this in 2004 and got a reply from an individual whose email address was not functional when I attempted to contact him. I never heard anything else.
I want desperately to meet my father and any siblings I may have.
Please contact me via messaging or through email at skiefangor[at]gmail[dot]com (replacing symbols as necessary) if you know him, are him, or know someone who may be him who is willing to contact me.
Thank you.

I have updated information on this line of Benjamin Neale Vermillion that connects. Esther and Tabitha apparently were different people, and data suggests BNV had two separate families, one of which remains untraceable. I haven't been able to gather what I consider adequate documentation, but I did find a descendant in this line who has verified several of our suspected connections as accurate. Contact me if you are still interested.

Dear Doug, I am posting here, because it is a recent thread and I hope a good way to reach you. I have tried to email you in the past, but I did not succeed in reaching you. You seem to be the person who knows the most about the Vermillion family. I have been searching for information on my grandfather, James Omar Vermillion and his family. I can find next to nothing.

He was born in Texas in 1889 and married my grandmother Ruby Gray (now, I am not sure they were married) they had 5 children. It is a sad story and he was so secretive that no one knows anything about him. He disappeared from my mother's life when she was 8. She discovered he was gone and packed her little suitcase and ran down the railroad tracks to go after him. ...she never saw him again.

I found that he married a Clara Belle Murdock in 1930 in Greer Co. Ok on April 11. then I found a registration for draft. I couldn't believe I was actually looking at my grandfather's hand writing. What a strange feeling. This illusive man did exist. It said he lived in Grayson Co. TX and he was also born in Grayson Co. TX on November 5, 1889. He named a Billie Joe Vermillion as living with him. I don't know who that is.

I know you are a busy man, I see from your posts that you are asked alot of questions. I was hoping you could steer me to something helpful. His father was James Durit Vermillion or James McDurit Vermillon and I just saw something with the spelling with one L. His mother was Matilda.

My mom has no memory left, but she really didn't know much about her father...just the loss. Her mother, Ruby Gray, was one of 12 born to John McDougal Gray. He was a strict man and mean. Omar met my grandmother when she was a girl of 18 at a summer fair. Her brothers left her there and Omar said he would take her home. Actually, the rest of this story I would rather tell just you. my email address is tjmcfarlin@yahoo.com I deleted a bit because I know this is public. Can you help me search? Thank you, Tina

I would like to know who they found is the real John Vermillion known as Texas Jack Vermillion. As John Wilson was found not to be the one. I am trying to find the new article that is coming out on the one they found to be the real one as it has been pointed to my husband's family. Looking at all the info written on Texas Jack you can see the need to ck all the sources to make sure you have it right. Now all that fake stuff will be out there and will still be used. It is a good info for his personal life but would like to know what they found to point to John O. Vermillion. I understand this John is related to my husband as well through the Gile Vermillion family down the line.

An article will be published by author Peter Brand within the next six months or so that will detail what our research has uncovered about the identity and the life of the real Texas Jack. Until that time, I am bound by my research agreement with Mr. Brand and our team to not release or share our information. Once the article has been published, I will be most happy to share with any and all family members what I know about the real TJV, which may possibly be only a little more than the content of the article depending on the degree of editing it undergoes. If you haven't read Mr. Brand's first article offering proof that John Wilson Vermillion was not TJV, the article was published in the August-September issue of the Wild West History Assocation's journal.

I had a feeling that the 1910 c wasn't him as things didn't match up. The only one I can say was him was the 1880 as it matches to a tee. I will tell Jerry as I have been in communication with him from the start he was the one who told me about this and I just took it from there. I have added to his research and he has added to mine. I have a photo of the William Vermillion family minus John and his older half brother William. If you sent me an e-mail I will send them to you. I think it is the only photo taken with the family before William Sr. died. Did he tell them anything on his life before

I can and will eventually give you all of the info you want, and I would really like to hear back from Jerry (who I called several years ago) to see if he ever found any photos of John or William's family. I have several of John, but they are photos of him after he returned to Ohio in 1919.

To answer your question about his return to Ohio, John returned to Ohio in 1919 after being gone for 53 years. During that time, he had no communication with any of his family back in Ohio. If you have his pension files, then you know how his siblings were at first skeptical when he showed up at Oliver's doorstep in 1919. John told them many stories from their childhood and young adulthood, including the story that he had left Ohio in 1866 to deliver a team of horses sold by a neighbor to a farmer in Delavan, IL. John was gone for 53 years. I don't know if the neighbor ever got his money for the horses, either. Oliver and Mary were the first to finally realize he was their brother, and as you probably know from reading the pension file Mary cared for him during his final two years. John told the pension investigators that he never married.

I wish we knew when John came home as there is not census that we can find him in except the 1880. Have not found a 1870 either. We thought we had a 1910 but it can't be him as nothing matches. Jerry sent it to me and I just looked it over and compared it with his death certificate and pension records. He could not write so he more than likely could not read. My husband is descended from William Vermillion and Mary McClain's daughter Lucinda Purdum who married William Van Buren Wells. There are alot of stand outs in my husbands lines so this is not surprising if true. But it appears that he disappears from Ohio for some time. I hope to see the whole article. I don't get the magazine so hope to get the article some how. Interesting that it appears that John O. and John Wilson are related to the same lines. John had an interesting life although sad too. Can't wait to see it.

Hi, Linda . . .

I do have it already, but thanks very much for being so kind as to send it.

You mentioned in another post about Texas Jack and the new discoveries. I am very mcuh aware of what has been written as I have been a part of the research team. If you have access to the Wild West History Associaiton Journal, the August-September issue contained an article by Peter Brand entitled "Duty Bound: The Story of John Wilson Vermillion and The Myth of Tombstone's Texas Jack." It is NOT available online, but one can order a copy of the journal from the WWHA by emailing royyoung@pldi.net. You can visit Peter's online site for an overview of the article at www.tombstonevendetta.com.

The next article should appear late this year, if the research goes well and the documentation proves authentic. Email me and I will provide you with a bit more info that I am sharing with Vermillion cousins, but there is much I cannot in good conscience divulge yet as the documentation isn't completely authenticated and the timeline isn't completed.

Three children George Washington McKinny B. 1831, John Wesley McKinny B.1835, Mary Ann Maria McKinny B. 1836. All three children born in Ohio.I believe her fathers name was George Vermillion. I have seen George Washington Vermillion and John Wesley Vermillion, could there be a connection between my John Wesley McKinny and George Washington McKinny to the George Washington Vermillion and John Wesley Vermillion?

Sallie Vermillion

I have a tin print, written on it "Miss Sallie Vermillion" Urbana Ohio. Written on the sleeve "When you see, please think of me dear Auntie, your neice Sallie". It was found in my GGGrandmothers Mary Ann (Maria) McKinny (b. 1836 in Ohio) photo album. Mary Anns mothers maiden name was Dorcus Tabitha Vermillion b. 1808 in West Virginia and she married Joseph McKinny b.1809 in Virginia. Mary Ann came to Oregon with her father Joseph, mother Dorcus, brothers John Wesley, and George Washington McKinny about 1852. Mary Ann married my GGGrandfather W R Chenoweth in Oregon about 1853.

Re: VERMILLION Family Ancestry

Doug, I just wanted to thank you for being so painstaking in your research. I'm related to Jesse Vermillion, Russell County, Virginia m. Mary Scott. I just recently got back into genealogy after a long absence and am a little appalled at the amount of misinformation out there. Seems somebody puts a fact out there and everyone accepts it and multiplies it. Anyway, I am collecting primary source support for my Vermillion family but, of course, cannot really go much further than Jesse although he does say in his pension application that his father was also named Jesse. I see that in the trees in various forms -- but primarily with William as his father. I have Ira's book -- have some cousins who have been woring on checking it out but haven't heard from them recently. (The Doughertys intermarried quite frequently with Vermillions in Scott County, VA -- My ggrandfather Samuel Dougherty and ggrandmother Ellen Vermillion were actually second cousins.) Keep up the good work, and I will let you know what I find out! Thanks, Anne Dougherty
