Actually, you found a post from several years ago. I have the information, and was not really looking for Christina, but for information on her sister, Margaret, who was also born in Bonnytown. One of the Steven researchers neglected to list Margaret, but she she still existed. Thanks for posting. I had posted to find information on Christina, because I'd hit a dead end. I guess that the Verts are much more into family history than the Hilliers. If you'd like more information on Margaret, I can send it to complete your information on that "first" family of Alexander Steven.

Do you want information for Christina Stevens or Christina Stephen Vert. Her father was Alexander Stephen born in Scotland in 1810. He married Ellen Inglis about 1835 in Scotland. They had James b.1837, Ellen b.1839 & Christena b.1841 in Bonnytown, Rayne Co, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

I for got to say that my first husband was Calvin Clifford Vert 1922 - 1974. His line came from Calvin, Calvin,John,John,John,John to ?. My in-law's where Calvin Vert & Mary Ann Butler.

Celina, Yes, that is the family. There was another daughter born in Scotland, Margaret, who was my great, great grandmother and who married William Hillier. I also believe that the son who was born in Scotland was George. There was another family with younger children who were born after Alexander moved the older children to Canada and re-married.

Several people have sent me much more information and put me in touch with other researchers since my original post in 2004. Thanks to all who responded.

My grandfather was the 4th child of Christina Stephen and John Vert. He had 9 siblings, Emma, Calvin, Dorinda, Luther (my grandfather), Caroline, Christina, John, Jerome, Mary, and George. Sence no one has answerd you I will try to! Please do not take this at face value. You'll need to research it for yourself. Christena Stephen's was the daghter of Alexander Stephen, born 1810 in Bonnytown, Rayne Co, Aberdeenshire, Scotlacd. He married Ellen Inglis about1835 at Bonnytown, Scotland. They had 3 children James b.1837, Ellen 1839 and Christena. The family moved to Canada after the death of Alex's first wife Ellen.

Looking for any descendants of this Francis Vert.
"Frank" married Jane Harper in 1861 probably in Ontario Canada.
Jane was born 1835 in England.
They immigrated to Michigan after the Civil War.
Children are, Catherine, Mary, Eliza, Henry, Martha, William, Francis, Robert.
The last four born in Michigan.

My ggg grandfather, Robert Lock's second wife was Mary Vert. They married in McLean County on 4/26/1872. Mary died on 11/4/1903 and is buried in Gridley Cemetery in McLean Co. Her tombstone indicates that she was born on 11/26/1819. If this is the same Mary, I would love to hear what you know about her. Judi

What were Robert Lock and Mary Vert's children's names? Do you have either of their parent's names? Do you have any other dates besides marriage for these two?

Robert's second marriage came late in his life. His first wife who was my ggg grandmother died in 1870. Robert and Mary had no children as far as I can tell. However, I believe that Mary had children from a prior marriage as her tombstone says "Mother." It also says "Wife of J. F Vert." (I'm not 100% positive about the first initial of her husband's name, but it looked like a "J". I'm on vacation right now, but I can send you a picture of the photo when I return home if you are interested.) There was a small tombstone right next to Mary's tombstone for a Ruth Kinney. I think that the two women are somehow related. Neither of Mary's husbands were buried next to her. I do not know that names of either Robert's or Mary's parents. Robert was born in Mercer Co, KY on 12/6/1798 and removed to McLean Co. with his first wife and family in 1852. He died in 1877.

I just took another look at your original note and noticed that Jacob's middle name was Felix. Perhaps J. F. Vert and your Jacob are the same person and Mary was his wife? I also noticed that you have a Kinney in you note. Sounds like we are talking about the same family.

Hi Kathy,

I believe that is the same Christina. In the meantime since that message was posted, another person contacted me, who had a tremendous amount of information. What little I had filled in some gaps in her line.

It gets confusing because they seemed to use the same names over and over in each generation so we end up with a lot of Georges and so forth.

However, I believe that my Margaret Steven Hillier was a sister of your Christina Vert.

Their father was Alexander Steven, who had two wives in Scotland; the first wife died. There were four children born in Scotland to the second wife, but when she also died, he moved his children, who were fairly well grown by then, to Proton, Ontario. The two wives are buried side-by-side in Bonnytown, Aberdeen, Scotland. In Ontario he met and married a third wife and had a whole new family.

If your Christina is the same Christina Vert I'm talking about, and if you are interested, I can put you in touch with the family who lives in Alberta, Canada, and who could most likely tell you fairly quickly if these are the same people. They are super knowledgable about the family, having even traveled to Scotland several times.

Although I realize this question was posted years ago, I am hoping you are still in need of information. I have found through a family tree in my posession that Christina Stephens was born in Aberdeen Scotland and moved to Ontario Canada. She married John Vert. John had four siblings- Helen, Sarah , Aquilla and George. John and Christina's son Calvin was my great grandfather. Some of the family eventually settled in Sault, MI.

I believe I descend from Jacob Vert through John Felix Vert's daughter Julia. Julia married Henry Kinney in McLean Co. IL had at least one son, Charles. She later married Edward Hampton and had at least five more children. Her daughter, Ada, marrid John Raney in Pulaski Co. KY in 1908. They had four children, which only my grandmother Beverly Ruth survived. I also have a photograph of a Mr. and Mrs. John Irwin (of whom I believe to be Mary Elizabeth Vert and John Wesley Irwin), whom my grandmother said were cousins to her family. I also have other family photos that may or may not be Verts and Irwins and would be glad to share with others who descend from these same people.

Am seeking information on the parents of Christina Stevens Vert, whose father was George Stevens. Chrisina was born in Scotland in 1843; the family moved to Ontario, Canada when she was a child. I believe they settled in or near Hamilton, Ontario.

My gggrandmother, Margaret Stevens Hillier, was Christina's older sister. Other siblings were Nellie and George.

I've knocked my head against a wall on the Stevens line for several years. Any information would be appreciated.

We are definately distant cousins of some sort!! Your John Vert married to Eliza Burton was brother to my Frances Vert who married David Kinghorn. John and Frances parents were Francis Vert (1752-1826) and Catherine Heggie (1760-1834) and were married in 1780 Haddington East Lothian scotland.

VERT''s in Arkansas

In my quest to find my great grandparents, the VERT name popped into my family tree.
In 1900, my Great grandparents William Thomas ROWDEN Palmyra WHEAT ROWDEN were living in Sevier Co., AR. In the same household were their 2 grandchildren, Monroe and Martha J. VERT.
On the same census page is a Charles VERT married to Matie (unknown) VERT and a son Oscar VERT born Mar 1, 1900.
The 2 grandchildren are probably children of their daughter Nancy ROWDEN.
Later, I found Oscar VERT's grave in Johnston Co., OK in the same cemetery with some more of my ROWDEN family.
Charles VERT (could be the grandchildrens father) was born in Indiana in 1866.
Does anyone have any information on the VERTs that migrated from Indiana to Arkansas before the turn of the century?

Since this was posted, I have found that Matie TEVIS VERT was the wife of N.Charles Vert. (Charles was a middle name). Matie VERT was the sister of John Thomas Jefferson TEVIS who married my grandfathers sister Elsie ROWDEN. Was the Charles VERT you mentioned born about 1866?(date was determined by his age in the 1900 census)

In researching, a distant relative wrote down some history of my Vert relatives.

John Vert born before 1800. His wife was Eliza Burton. They had two children. Francis and Eliza.

Francis married Mary Smith Dods. They had 9 children.

With the exception of John and MacRae, the other 7 children remained in Scotland. John and MacRae Vert immigrated to Oregon. John remained in Pendleton, OR for the remainder of his life. MacRae moved to Portland, OR and later to Milwaukie, Or.

I have been working on the Virtue name.

When I have searched the Family History center I have seen the name Vert and wondered if there could have been any relationship.

We believe that many Virtues left France, probably as French Huguenots and then lived in Scotland and Ireland.

Have you ever seen any connection between the 2 names?

My research into the Finlay family genealogy ties into the Vert Family in the following manner:Mary Vert born Abt. 1741 in Haddington, East Lothian, married William Steele on June 13, 1762 in Tranent, Haddington, EL SCT. One of their daughters, Mary Steele (b. 1771) married James Finlay on March 24, 1798 in Tranent. You should know that Haddington was back then, an area name as well as a town name.

My Mary was the daughter of William Steel and Mary Vert. I found out on a recent search of an LDS film that: "John Vert, father-in-law of William Steel died of decay at age 75 on Nov. 28, 1782." Also Mar Steele died of decline on November 21, 1847 at age 76. I hope this somehow ties in with your info.

From LDS film: Mary Vert (widow of the late Wm. Steele labourer) died February 19, 1813 age 75. Also William Steel and Mary Vert had Agnes 1763, William 1764, John 1767, Mary 1772, Janet 1774, Jean 1776, Anne Fordyce 1779 and Charles 1781. If this is of interest, I have a few more details.
