Hi,
with regards to the query about Eustace Vessey, born 1829 and his wife, Maria winfield. I think that Eustace had left Maria before their son, Eustace was born, he may even have been born in Chesterfield Workhouse, as in 1856, Maria was a resident there 4 times in 1856. Is this also the reason for Eustace later taking his Mothers surname.
There is also a Eustace Vessey as a passenger on the S.S. City of Baltimore to New York in 1861.
Yours Les

Hello,

Is it possible that when your Vessey Families went to NZ they could have had a teenage girl travelling with them , Evelina Vessey who came on to Austalia.

I cannot find how Evelina came out to Australia. Both her parents had died by 1862, Henry and Mary Ann Vessey, and the first information I have about Evelina in Australia is when Evelina married Jemmy Ah Foo in 1866 in Queensland Australia. Evelina was born in 1850 so she was only 16 when she married so she was abt. 15 years of age when she came out by ship.

Evelina's two sisters Ann Elizabeth and Hannah married in England before coming to Austrlia with their husbands.

I have always thought Evelina travelled to Australia with another family.

I have to try all avenues! It is driving me mad not being able to find the records.

Sandy L

I note in my research that two Vessey families came out to Auckland NZ in the 1860's. I wondered if you had any links to the London/Hull/Kent or NZ Vessey's?

Many thanks

Hi,
I think that the village you mention is Barnby in The Willows, near Newark in Nottinghamshire, at one time there was enough Vessey's to put out a full cricket team. There have been members of the Vessey family living there from the early 1700's to the present day. I doubt if it was Gervas and Mary's family that came to the US, we think that it was other branches of the family that came over.
Les

My grandfather George Vessey died in 1925 at Searby Top but I am unable to find any evidence through records (Searby church records were not available on a recent visit) and there is no record on Burials. He was married to Frances Mary Thornton and had two sons, Frderick Norman and (my father) Harold (b. 22/02/22) Does anybody have any further information?
Tony Vessey

Hi Mick

I have a copy of thier marriage certificate and Eustace was Eustace Vessy Wingfield with the 'g' either scrubbed out or very light so it didn't copy well! - bachelor aged 22 and although it does say both Eustace and Ellen Parket are Illegitimate - this appears incorrect and I don't know reasons for this.

Also the signature for Eustace also has the 'g' being rubbed out of Wingfield.

In April 1856 Eustace was born to Eustace Vessey and Maria Vessey formerly Wingfields - so he could not have been illegitimate. (mind you I have got to check the marriage of the two).

Where does Horace come into the family line? You said he was Walter Winfield's brother? Was he a brother -in-law?

I have a list of Eustace and Ellen's children - 8 of them but no mention of a Horace.

regards
Paul
