You know that is interesting. Of course, back in those days, as in these days, if you have a relative you like, you might name a child after them. So could be that. But I agree with you, merits some more research. I will keep this email and see what I can find, in the way of proof for Dinah and James and share with you should I find anything. Of course, women weren't well documented in those days. Happy hunting. Dev

Edward Davidson's Will was written in 1793, as I recall, and it was probated in 1794 (in Campbell Co., VA). The referenced slaves, however, were not divided among those five men (sons-in-law) until around 1800 (after Edward Davidson's wife Mrs. Agnes (Mosby) Davidson had also died).

One of the sons of Edward Davidson named Charles Davidson took Mrs. Agnes (Mosby) Davidson to court to try to obtain some of the family's slaves in the late-1790s, but Agnes died before that case could be settled. Charles Davidson decided to leave VA for GA around 1799, and as far as I can tell, Charles never did obtain any of his father's slaves (and they all went instead to the sons-in-law). I would not be surprised if Agnes Mosby was the second wife of Edward Davidson (per a couple of clues), and she was perhaps not the mother of Charles Davidson.

I wonder why James Vest and Dinah Chastain would have also named a son "Littleberry" Vest (just like John Vest and Agnes Davidson did), if the wife of that James Vest was not a descendant of the Mosby family (there was a Littleberry Mosby who was prominent that Mosby family)? I don't recall, but perhaps that Chastain family had also married into the Mosby family.

Ok, I follow you now. The James Vest that married Dinah Chastain (I have no documentation for the marriage as yet)died in 1795, so I would think the James Vest referred to in 1800 was another James Vest. Do you have the date the will was made? As in other families, given names repeated even in the same generation with the Vests, so the possibility of more than one James is high. I'm sorry I haven't documented or followed every Vest - only those in my direct line. Perhaps someone else will step forward and claim this James as their ancestor.

Another thought: do you have a daughter of Edward's whose spouse is unaccounted for? Goodluck.
Merry Webb is one of the five known sons-in-laws of Edward Davidson. We know that Merry's wife's name was Elizabeth Davidson. The father of that Merry Webb was also namesd Merry Webb (two of several people in that Webb family over the years whose given name was "Merry").

I have that James Vest, son of John Daniel Vest of Chesterfield County, Virginia died in 1795. I don't have documentation on this because he is not my direct line but many other trees support this. So if it's true, perhaps the James mentioned in the Edward Davidson's will in 1800 is a different James. A son? Sorry I cannot be of more help.

John Vest and Agnes Mosby....and his brother James Vest-VA

John Vest (supposedly a son of the John D. Vest of Chesterfield Co., VA who was born around 1705) married Agnes Davidson, a daughter of Edward (born circa-1715) and Agnes (Mosby) Davidson. Some show that the brother of that John Vest named James Vest married a Dinah Chastain. I note, however, that around 1800, the slaves who remained in the estate of Edward Davidson (he had died, and so had his wife Agnes) were divided among Edward's sons-in-law, and their names were: John Vest (married Agnes Davidson), James Vest, Merry Webb (married Elizabeth Davidson), Abraham Jones (there was a later man in that family who was named Davidson Jones) and John Kitchen. This would imply that James Vest married a Miss Davidson versus a Miss Chastain....unless these were actually two different James Vests. I have seen some posts on the internet where researchers were not so sure that Dinah was truly a Miss Chastain....but maybe she was a Miss Chastain after all, and maybe there were simply two different James Vests in this overall "mix" (and perhaps the other potential James Vest married a Miss Davidson). Comments?

Note: Agnes Mosby had a Littleberry Mosby in her family (he is credited with the establishment of what is today Powhatan Co., VA), and I suspect that is why there were some later Littleberry Vests in the Vest family.

Re: Elizabeth W. Davis (Wife of Francis Pledge VEST) who was her mother?

I have today obtained some supporting evidence for the mother of Elizabeth DAVIS (wife of Francis Pledge VEST) being Anne Frances HILL.
After corresponding with another descendant of Thomas Locke DAVIS and Anne Frances HILL, and reading a excerpt from "The History of Yadkin County" published by the Yadkin County Historical Society in 1981 it reads:

THOMAS LOCKE DAVIS
41-8-A
Thomas Locke Davis was born September 2, 1789. He was of 'English descent. He was first married July 25, 1809, to Ann Frances Hill (born 1789). They had ten children, one of them being Thomas Davis, (II).
After the death of his first wife, he married a secondtimeandtheyhadfourchildren. Heleft East Bend about 1840 and with his second family, went ot live in Tennessee, about forty- five miles north east of .chattanooga.	He died in 1862 and was buried at Old Fort, Ten- nessee.	.
- Margaret Miller Conrad

THOMAS LOCKE DAVIS FAMILY
418-B
Thomas Locke Davis married Anne Frances Hill, date unknown. Their children were: Patsy Miller, Sallie Tate, Nancy Joyner, Frances Joyner, Susan Edwards, Betsy Vest, Julia Hauser, Joseph Davis, Issac Davis, and Thom- as Davis.
It is known that the first family that has been traced to our kin came from Pennsylvania, date unknown. However, the earlier records can be found in an old Welch Bible.
As time went by, we find some of the Penn- sylvania Davises came to Virginia, then on into North Carolina. Thomas Locke Davis being a part of them, was a successful farmer. He and Anne Frances settled near Shore, Yadkin County, North Carolina, which is now known as Flint Hill community.
Thomas Locke Davis married again, his second wife's name is unknown. They had four children: John, Hence, Bill, and Mary Jane. Hesettled this time near Cleveland, Ten- nessee. The three sons were in the Civil War, two were killed, but the younger son returned home. He died later in the harvest field from a heat stroke. None of the sons married.
The daughter, Mary Jane, married a lawyer. They lived in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her father had several slaves and a large farm in Cleve- land, Tennessee, which was wrecked by the war. The daughter disposed of the farm and its contents. This family was buried in the Boar- nerges Baptist Church Cemetery at Old Fort, Tennessee.
Anne Frances Hill Davis was buried in the Shore Cemetery, Shore, North Carolina, date unknown.
- Louise Davis Poindexter

There is also a North Carolina Marriage Record Collection on Ancestry.com that lists a marriage between Thomas DAVIS and Francis HILL on 25 July 1809 in Stokes County, NC.

I would be interested to hear thoughts or opposing information to the fact that Anne Frances HILL was not the mother of Elizabeth "Betsy" DAVIS VEST.

-Carri

Actually on Ancestry.com, if a search is done on Thomas Locke DAVIS, many trees can be viewed that show both wives, and there are in fact sources cited and shown for the marriage between Thomas and Francis Anne HILL.
I am hoping someone who has the definitive answer as too wether Elizabeth's mother was a PETTIT or HILL. Based on the time HILL died, it would make sense that Elizabeth was her daughter, but even those dates are in question without proof.

Almost every public tree on Ancestry.com also shows her mother as Elizabeth Pettit b 1817 in Surry Co., NC and d 1865 in Polk Co., TN.. But NO one has any sources listed for verification.

This topic is a bit sideways from the VEST line but very relative:

I have always seen Elizabeth Pettit listed as the mother of Elizabeth W. DAVIS (1809-1865) - but recently I have seen a different first wife listed as the husband of Thomas Locke DAVIS (1789-1862) . Her name was Ann Francis HILL (1787-1833) and she is listed as the mother of Elizabeth and many other children in that marriage.
Can anyone confirm this fact for me? Or shed new light on this for me?

If you are really serious, contact me at my regular email address: lynnstokes@yahoo.com

My Vest family went from Virginia to Georgia to Alabama to Arkansas and then spread out west in many directions.

John Baugh died in Chesterfield Co., Va., but lived in Prince Edward Co., Va. He left 10 children, four or five under age, also several referred to as infants. His wife must have died earlier as she is never mentioned in the court records. The children are referred to as "John Baughs' orphans. Thomas Gibson had sold 100 acres on the Appomattox river Buckingham Co. side to Gabriel Vest. Thomas Gibson's wife was in court releasing her dower rites of this land as her husband was dec'd. She stated that her husband had also sold 196 acres joining the above mentioned land in P.E. recorded 17 June 1793. The P.E. court orderd that the land be offered for sale to the highest bidder for "the care of John Baugh's orphans." Gabriel Vest was the highest bidder for the two tracts of land. He then sold them to William Webb. Martha Gibson made this declaration in April 1808. Gabriel Vest marrying Tabitha Baugh in Chesterfirld in 1794 appears to be the daughter of another John Baigh with will 1784. It is possible that he might be the father of the John Baugh above. In the will of 1784 John names Tabitha while the two married daughters he gives their married names. Other Vest-Baugh marriages are1797 Phillip m. Polly Baugh, 10 Dec.1810 Henry Vest m Elizabeth Baugh sur. Phillip Vest ( this could be daughter of John P.E. Co. inv. 1794. This may not answer your questions but the dates might help.
Both of these Johns had daughters named Tabitha. The P.E. Tabitha is probably the youngest of the two.

Hello Kristine,

I sent you an email to the address you had listed...klpaters@uncg.edu I'm not sure if you'll get it. Just in case you don't, email me at dale.vest@bayer.com
Maybe we can help each other out with information that we might have. Thanks!

Dale

Hello,

This book does in fact exist. However and unfortunately, the author, Erma Sowers, passed away some time ago. I did receive a message when I was inquiring where I could get a copy of it from Erma's gdaughter that she and Erma's daughter, were working on updating it and would let me know when it's available.

Dale
