My fiance' is a Vickroy and we found a George Beary Vickroy born 1892 in Union Furnace, Ohio, son of Eli Vickroy and Susan Burgoon Vickroy. There may be some connection, Eli seems to be a very common name amoung the Vickroy's. I know of an Eli Vickroy that exsists today, I think it's my fiance's cousin.

Hello,

I can tell you I have photocopies of the church baptismal records for the children of Hugh Viccary & Margaret Phillips. They are a bit difficult to read, but I do have them & have deciphered them. Also I have this from a fellow Viccary/Vickroy/Vicroy researcher:

from research commissioned by Eric Vickroy from a researcher in England:

Western Circuit, including Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Hampshire and Wiltshire;
Code, Class and Piece #:
ASSI 24/25 Transportation orders for Mar 1743-1770
ASSI 23/6 Gaol Books Winter Assizes 1743-4: Puse [?] Guilty 4s 10d [value of the goods stolen?]
"To be transported 7 yrs Housebr Hugh Viccary for breaking the dwelling House of Joan Webber in the day time and stealing therout a Gold Ring and other Goods of the sd Webber and a fustian waistcoat of Richd Beedle."
----------------------
Hope that helps. I have never seen ANY evidence of the clan Mac Gregor story.

Sincerely,
Sally Huntley
(photogskh@aol.com)

John T Vickroy b.1820 Bedford PA d.1901 Macon Co MO

Descendants of John T Vickroy

The Descendants of Hugh Viccory b.1726 Bishops Nympton Parish, Devon, England and his family born St Luke's Parish, Queen Ann Co., MD has widely been reported in many locations. However some of Hugh Viccory’s Grandchildren seem to be widely absent from the public domain. One of Hugh’s son was William Vickroy b.1768 and went to Bedford Co PA and was married to Elizabeth Cessna. One of his sons was William T Vickroy b.abt.1799 in Bedford Co PA. He had a son John T Vickroy b.abt.July1820 in Bedford Co PA who went to Hampshire VA then on to Shelby MO then Macon MO. I can find no question asked in any Vickroy Forum about this line. The following info might give some future researcher some guidance. The research has been based on public records of Ancestry as well as MO Death Certificates (See Note):
1 John T Vickroy 1820 - 1901 b: Abt. However it seems unusual that the returned to Hampshire Co PA after her family migrated to MO about 1832 or that she got married in MO and returned to VA for the birth of her first 2 children.
Margaret Phillips, born 1733 in Cecil Co., MD; died 1772 in Cecil Co., MD.

Notes for Hugh Viccary:
Hugh Viccory/Viccary was allegedly convicted of a felony in Devon, England circa 1744-1745. He was sent to the Brittish owned American Colony of Maryland to serve a 7 year sentence. Hugh remained in the Colonies after completion of his sentence. He learned to be a Ship's Captain & made regular voyages from Baltimore, MD to Glasgow & Brittish ports. No record has been found of the crime Hugh was accussed of committing. He settled in Queen Anne's County, MD, married & raised a family. Accounts of his children & grandchildren recall Hugh having a heavy Scottish accent. The surname apparently was changed to Vickroy/Vicroy/Vick Roy (et al) & many of Hugh's children moved to western PA.

Family "history" has it that the surname Viccory/Viccary (et al) were septs of Clan MacGregor of Scotland. The MacGregor surname having been proscribed by Brittish law from the early 1600s to the early 1800s caused the name Viccory/Viccary (et al) to be used in its place.

Children of Hugh Viccary and Margaret Phillips are:
i.	Thomas Vickroy11, born 19 Oct 1754 in St Luke's Parish, Queen Ann Co., MD11
ii.	Fanney Vickroy11, born 22 Sep 1756 in MD11
iii.
This is many years after your first posting, but I know a fair amount about Thomas Vickroy of Bedford County, PA. Not only was he one of the first two men to survey the city of Pittsburgh, but he was a prominent member of my 3rd great aunt's Swedenborgian Reading Circle in Bedford, PA - she being Hester Barclay b. 1757 Lancaster, PA d. 1796 Bedford, PA. Hester was the first female convert to the Swedenborgian faith in America - in Philadelphia in 1784.

I have absolutely no doubt at all that the woman mentioned in your message of 2002 - Hester Augusta Vickroy was named for my aunt Hester - who converted Thomas, and much of his family (and others who converted Johnny Appleseed).

If you are interested in learning more, do get in touch. A cousin recently found Vickroy graves in Dunnings Creek, PA, north of Bedford. Thomas lived in Alum Bank, PA.

I have just spoken to the Somerset County PA Historical Society and it would seem they have all of Thomas Vickroy's papers on microfilm (he owned an iron forge in Somerset County). I hope to go and review that sometime soon. I have a strong hunch that Vickroy knew John Chapman and had a hand in introducing him to Judge John Young 1762-1841, who converted him.

Arthur in Miami

Dear Sally,

Thank you for the information...I am most grateful. I, too, have looked at all of the census records and cannot find Mr. Wallen. I always try to verify records before I put them in my tree because there is so much wrong information out there that I want to try to stop perpetuating the wrong information. Since I know you have the best information on the Vickroy family...and you cannot connect Mr. Wallen to this particular Mary Vickroy...I am going to leave him out...If it later appears that he was a first husband...then I will put him back in.

Again, thank you for all of your help.

Susan

Hi,

I have Mary "Polly" Vickroy [d/o William & Elizabeth (Cessna) Vickroy] as being married to Thomas H. Chaney. I cannot say if she was at one time married to David Wallen, but in 1924 she would have only been about 16 years old (possible, but who knows). In her father's will written in 1850 & probated in 1851, she is listed as Polly Chaney. Perhaps the parents had the first marriage annulled(?sp)?

In checking census for the era, I find her as Chaney/Cheney in nearly all from 1850 to 1880. However, in many she is listed by herself...where was Thomas (maybe out of town)? In 1880, he & she are both listed together in the census & he lists his occupation as "teacher-retired".

Here are the 2 clippings I have for their marriage:

Democratic Enquirer newspaper, June 27, 1833:

"Thomas M. Cheny, merchant, and Miss Vickroy were married on Thursday, June 13, 1833 by George McCoy, Esq.; all are of Bedford Co."
----------------
Bedford Gazette, June 28, 1833:

"Married on Thursday, the 13th inst., by George McCoy, Esq. Thomas H. Cheney, Merchant, to Miss Mary Vickroy, all of this county."
--------------
I could find NO David Wallen in PA at all in the census during the same eras...wish I could have been of more help.

I will check with my Vickroy research group & see if they have any answers.

Sincerely,
Sally Huntley

Mary Vickroy d/o William Vickroy married to Thomas Cheney or David Wallen? - HELP!!

I am again perplexed by confusing information and would appreciate any help from anyone who can shed any light on the subject. Here is what I know (or think I know):

I have a notice that was posted in the Democratic Inquirer in Bedford County, PA on October 15, 1824 which states the following:

"David Wallen of Cumberland, Md., and Mary, daughter of William Vickroy, Cumberland Valley Twp., were married by Rev. Zigler."

I attributed this notice to Mary (aka Polly) Vickroy daughter of William Vickroy b. 1768 in Maryland.

I recently came across the following record listed in the Bedford Gazette on June 28, 1833:

"Married on Thursday, the 13th inst., by George McCoy, Esq. Thomas H. Cheney, Merchant, to Miss Mary Vickroy, all of this county."

A similar notice appeared in the Democratic Inquirer on June 27, 1833.

In an attempt to figure out WHICH Mary Vickroy this 2nd notice might belong to, I started to search ancestry.com...and it appears that the Mary Vickroy that I attributed the first notice to, showing the marriage between Mary Vickroy and David Whalen...is also the Mary that is shown as being married to this Thomas Cheney. Thus my confusion!!

Is there anyone who can clear up the discrepancy? Does anyone know WHICH Mary Vickroy married Thomas Cheney? Or did the same Mary marry both men?

Thank you for any help!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!I have hit a brick wall that seems I will never break through.I am seeking info on Charles Vickroy it is said that he was born 8-15-1832 in Schellsburg,PA.Now this I am not sure is correct I have found nothing to back this up.I do however know the year is accurate.5-28-1857 in Cambria county,Pa he married Matilda May Albaugh d/o Peter and Eve (Murphy)Albaugh. After there Marriage it appears that they lived in Cambria county for a few years before moving on to Burton,Geauga county,Ohio. In 1869 they had a son peter whom either died at birth or soon after. In 1873 they adopted a child through Geauga county court his name was William Augustus(Wood)Reeder and in 1880 they not only had William but a female by the name of Cora Bennett I have found no indication that they legally adopted this girl.On 1-22-1916 Charles died followed by Matilida 12-7-1918.They are buried along with their infant son Peter in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Burton,Ohio. What I am looking for is any info on Charles prior to his marriage.Who and where did he come from????Is the dob I have correct and which Vickroy family does he belong to????I have info to present day on most of this couples decendants by the adoption of William whom died in 1955 he was my gggrandfather.I also live in Ohio in portage county and I am willing to help anyone out my way that I can .Thanks for your time.

Thomas Vickroy Sr. information needed

I am researching the people who adjoined my ancestors land in Quemahoning Township, Bedford County (now Somerset) Pennsylvania.
I'm doing this in hopes that I may be able to break through my brickwall and hope someone can give me some answers.

In a deed dated 1804 my ancestor Isaac Bennett sells land to Christian Leman. The 200 acre tract of land adjoins Thomas Vickroy.
In looking at the information for Thomas Vickroy Sr. I am a bit confused as to where he is actually buried. Some say Spring Meadow Quaker Cemetery others state something completely different, I cannot find any listing or index for a Spring Meadow Cemetery in Bedford, PA...does it still exsist? or was the name changed?
I'm hoping that perhaps Thomas Vickroy & my Isaac Bennett might have ties beyond being neighbors. I see Thomas is a Quaker, I am currently speculating that perhaps Isaac Bennett or maybe his wife may have also been Quakers. I have no leads for Isaac any further back than 1793 Bedford County, and wonder if he may have come from Maryland as it seems many of the settlers in that area did.
If you would like to see the land deed with Thomas Vickroy's name included you can access my homepage at:
http://www.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bennett1.htm

Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me.
Lisa

Sally,
Thank you for responding so quickly to my post. First let me give you that link again, if it still doesn't work it is listed in the Rootsweb Freepages Database under "Bennett Family of Bedford & Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania" or you can find the link on the Somerset County Genweb page also.
http://www.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bennett1/index....

I am interested in Thomas Vickroy's movements prior to 1810, where did he live? where did he have most of his land holdings, did he move from town to town or live in one place for the most part, ect... I wonder if my ancestor Isaac Bennett may have known him prior to Beford/Somerset Co, PA. Also, would you know when he acquired the land that adjoins the land Isaac Bennett had in Quemahoning township? All this could hopefully help me in finding out where Isaac came from prior to 1792, which is the earliest date I have for him.
I know that Christian Leman in the deed is probably Christian Lehman, I've noticed the variations in the spelling of that surname and haven't ruled out that even Lehman could possibly be linked to Isaac in some way other than just this land transaction. As of yet I have found nothing though, and Isaac is my brickwall.
Hope you can get to my page and see what I have for Isaac, perhaps it might jog your memory of coming across something that may be of help to me...
Again, Thank you for replying!
Warmly,
Lisa

A Thomas Vickroy was a surveyor in early Western PA. He bought or invested in lands for iron, especially in Bedford County that became Somerset and Cambria Counties. I do not know if this Thomas Vickroy is the same person who was a silversmith-clock maker in Bedford town, Bedford County, PA. The surveyor, Thomas Vickroy surveyed Pittsburgh, PA. I have read the Surveyor was from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and I've read a Thomas Vickroy was from Kent, Delaware(which may have been Maryland at some point.) I have an ancestor, Henry Wise, a silversmith listed in the 1790 census of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pa. He warranted land for a Vickroy and had the deed for the land stipulate that he did not sell the land to Mr. Vickroy. I am interested in any information on Thomas Vickroy, the silversmith of Bedford town.
Shirley

Re: Thomas Vickroy Sr. information needed

<<In a deed dated 1804 my ancestor Isaac Bennett sells land to Christian Leman. The 200 acre tract of land adjoins Thomas Vickroy. >>

Hi Lisa,

I will TRY to be of some help. I am a direct descendant of Thomas VICKROY. It appears he was once a Quaker & later became affiliated with the Swedborgian religion. I have been to Thomas' grave. From what I understand, the name of the cemetery is "Springmeadow Quaker Cemetery", it is located on Rt. 56, East St. Clair Twp., Bedford Co., PA but I could not locate a sign indicating the actual name. His grave is marked by a monument which was placed there by his descendants some time after his death (& contains some errors).

As for Christian LEMAN...you may want to try to check Christian LEHMAN or LAYMAN as well. I do have a Christian LEHMAN, Jr. in my files, born 1803, your Christian may or may not be his father, I don't know.

I do know that Thomas VICKROY owned a great deal of land in Bedford, Somerset & Cambria Counties, PA as well as some in other states. Seems he was a rather enterprising gent.

Also, can you check the link you provided for your website? I keep getting an "error" message that the page does not exist.

Thanks much, wish I could have been of more help.

Sally Huntley

We have corresponded about the Clawson geneology for at least a year now. One of these days I would love to get to a Clawson reunion, if they still have them in PA. If I can come from Alaska, she can come from Maryland (I think that's where she lives.)

I'll check my other mail today to see if I got your other mail.
