Hi Christina,
The familysearch.org website of the Latter Day Saints has a historical records collections that includes Argentina. I was able to locate some Argentine ancestors that way; you might want to search these sources also if haven't already done so. Good luck! Cyn

Vidal in Argentina

I'm trying to find information on my maternal grandfather. His name is Ramon Martin Vidal and he was born 16 March 1928 in Zarate I believe. I'm not sure if he changed his name at all after coming, but friends would sometimes call him Mario.

I know that he came over to NY with the Argentine Navy in 1946 where he abandoned his ship while on shore leave to stay with my grandmother. I have pictures of his family in Argentina with the nicknames "Chichin" (his nephew) "Negra" (his niece) and "Macho" (his brother.) A photo dedicated to his sister has the name Julia on the back. His mother was either called Juana or Juanita De Luca (not sure on the spelling of the last name, possibly D'Lucca.) Supposedly, she came to Argentina from Sicily.

If anyone has pointers as far as where to go from here or has information on the family, I would truly appreciate it.

Christina

hi,
Thank you for your reply. I have been in touch with Rainbo77 and he was such a big help tracing back my father's entry to Ellis Island. I am now searching for a Tia Ana's family who immigrated to Argentina through Ellis island two years after my father in 1914 but so far nothing. Back to Spain, the trail has gone cold. I guess I must really go back there and search myself to get anywhere. It is not a priority for them to search for their family tree since they all have theirs around them unlike me who are scattered everywhere. Anyway, thank you for reaching out.

Hello rainbo77,
Sorry I didn't answer your question about where my father lived after he entered New York. My father went to earn his degree in commerce, now business administration I guess, from New York University, I am sure of this since we still have his diploma. He was then employed by McWay-Norris Company of New Jersy, an auto spare parts company and became their manufacturer's representative in Asia/Europe, his area of responsibilities were Japan, Formosa, now Taiwan, Philippines and Spain and Germany. He established his own import/export business home based in the Philippines, married his first wife there, had four daughters with her. Then when his last daughter married and he was a widower, this is when I am a bit foggy, he married my mother, Ana, had four children with her, me, being the youngest. I would like to share more but not in such a public space. Thank you so much again. Let's chat more again. What part of the USA are you in?

Virginia: El gusto es mio! I am only too happy to have been some help. But I really did nothing but direct you to Ellis Island. It is very important to read everything on those manifest pages of all the Vidal's or Carbo's that were from Barcelona, because that is how you may find names of additional relatives. And the Family Search Centers at the Mormon Church still have all those microfilms that I know will lead you to more family information. You may have to work backward, and it may take some time....but well worth it. Since I am clear across the country, I don't think I'll be coming to Virginia any time soon...although I would love to see it...so rich in American history! Yes, cousin, please keep in touch. I will try to find the names of my ancestors that lived in Barcelona. Rainbo

You are officially a relative of mine, even if you don't want to be(smile). If you were anywhere close to Virginia I would love to have you meet my family. I am going to telephone my sister with this fabulous news and ask her to go through my papa's records again. This is truly a happy, happy news for me, thanks to you, I feel so encouraged by this, just maybe, I still have have a few more relatives alive even if they are very distant relatives. Thank you very much again. I really have no desire to establish any relation with my half sister's children as they have not shown any wish to do so since my papa's death, well and done. No relations are better, look how kind and helpful you have been to me. I was so emotional to read the manifest with my papa's name, I owe that to you. If ever you come to Virginia, you got the Vidal family here to meet. Please let us not lose touch, if I find anymore names to connectus or not, I will let you know. Thank you again and again!!!!

I really want to know more about my father's family just to pass them on to my children. My youngest daughter is getting married in April and I would love to have my father's part of family represented in her life. We were raise in such a strong Spanish influence and I miss it so much.
I wonder if you read my past posting about all I knew and remember about everything about the stories and documentation I have on my father. I guess as I grow older the more I miss him and the Spanish in me.

This is becoming more intersting and hopeful for me. In my research I also came across that during the defeat of the Moors in Spain, when Queen Isabel united Spain and began baptizing Spaniards into Catholics, the Vidal surname once belong to Jews? There were really no strong documentations except few ancient surviving church baptisimal records showing Jews with Vidal surname baptized into Catholics. Reading the Reina Isabel history, it touched on it briefly that it was one of the conditions that in order for the Jews to kept their wealth/business/citizenship in Spain, they have to embrace and be baptized Catholic. What it must have felt for those people to have to choose, I cannnot imagine having to give up my religion now. To think that our foreparents could have been one of those people.
Anyway, I beg to differ about Spain keeping great records, maybe during and after Franco's era, but not before esp. if a Spaniard have been out of the country like my father was even if he had property still in his name in Barcelona, it was like ne never existed. At least my half sister's children are enjoying my father's childhood home in Barcelona.
Anyway. like I said, this is all my father's fault, except for his stories, we never really had much to go on. And really I never paid much attention except now that I am so much older and passing my heritage to my children has become so much more urgent. This is good, you could be my new found Argentine family,I always wanted to go to Argentina anyway.
Let's introduce each other better, we could be related somehow, anyway. Thank you very much again.

Hi again, Virginia:
I checked the Ellis Island records and found two Ernesto Vidals. One came to the US on the Laurentic on Dec 15, 1911. He was 27 and had lived in London, before coming to America. The records indicate a mother (I think) that was still in Barcelona, and gave an address. Then I looked up Carbo...found Birgiuia (Virginia), Carlos and Leopaldina Carbo, who had last resided in Barcelona, but were natives of Ecuador. There were several other Carbos listed from Barcelona, Spain. If you can read the manifest, look to see the names of any relatives still in Barcelona, or who they are coming to see in America, and you may find a connection. Also remember that the Spanish pronunciation of V is heard as B...I had a very hard time finding my grandmother until I looked under Bibir, and Bibit, instead of Vived. Probably should look up Bidal, also. And of course, the transcribers couldn't always read the script handwriting (or didn't want to look really closely), to transcribe it right. And to add to this mix...there are Vidals in Chili, too! Let me know if you find anything.
