That original message was posted on the Viele surname board in 2007, and the gift certificates expired within a few weeks.

I was interested in recruiting some Viele men. Unless you have some reason to think your paternal line is really Viele instead of Bell, you wouldn't want to join the Viele project anyway. The surname is essential when doing Y-DNA testing.

Family Tree DNA usually does a holiday sale, but it's usually for new kits. They had an upgrade sale back in June.

It is very likely that there is a Bell surname project at FTDNA. You can check their website for that information.

Hannah C. Viele, Second wife of Truman Alvah Viele

Desire to conclusively identify the following individual who married into the Viele family of Saratoga County, New York.

Hannah C. Viele, second wife of Truman A. Viele, died 9 August 1892, aged 66y 10da, buried Harris Cemetery, Saratoga County, New York; parent: John Rowland, no mother recorded.

Source: Leddick, Grace. Births, Marriages and Deaths from Town of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York, Deaths 1882-1901, p. 115-182, November 1954, FHL microfilm 1,316,156, item 4 (microfilmed typescript). Ms. Leddick, as Saratoga County Historian, copied these entries from records in the Town Clerk's office, November 1954.

Several public trees on Ancestry.com indicate that Truman Alvah Viele married first Mary A. Montgomery; and second Hannah Harris. These trees show Truman and wife, Hannah, both died in 1910; she at Sand Hill, NY. Also, he and Mary A. are the parents of Alvah Truman Viele. Could this son possibly be the husband of Hannah C. Viele (1826-1892) rather than the elder Viele who died in 1910?

A search of the online cemetery transcription for Harris Cemetery did not show an entry for Hannah C. Viele (1826-1892).

I would like to document the maiden surname of Hannah C. Viele, second wife of Truman A. Viele---Is she a Harris or a Rowland. If she is a Rowland, I would like to identify her mother and siblings.

Any information and assistance in solving this will be greatly appreciated.

Betty Hellums Rowland
bhrowland@aol.com

Hi Samantha: My name is Melodie Viele. My father was Homer, brother of Marvin. I knew Uncle Marvin when I was little - he used to come over to our house. There are four brothers, George, Donald, Homer and Marvin (although I think on the 1930 census they show him as Morgan). We lived just north of Chestertown, NY at Loon Lake with all the brothers in pretty close proximity. He did serve in WWII, as did all the brothers except George and was a POW.
DNA project for the Viele surname

I have established a surname DNA project for the Viele family, at FamilyTreeDNA, which you will find on the web at
http://www.familytreedna.com
The project won't show up on the alphabetical listings under surname projects until the first person joins, but you can find the page for the project by using the search box in the upper right-hand corner.

Establishing the project allows someone to get the group rates for the test. I would recommend that any male consider the 37 Y-marker test, but you may start with 12 markers and order further testing from there. The results of 12 markers are not conclusive, but the results from 37 are. For instance, my brother had several hundred matches on 12 markers, on a different surname project, but none of those people matched on 25 or 37 markers. We will need other participants' results to compare, in order to construct family groups, so please consider joining.

Since this is a Y-DNA project, only males carrying the Viele surname may order the Y testing. If a man is a male-line descendant, but his surname was changed by adoption, etc., this test would be appropriate for him, also. What is important is the straight male-line descent from a man with the surname. A female can ask a brother or other male relative with the surname to participate on her behalf. And a female may also order her own mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) testing, to get her maternal origin results. This mtDNA testing can be added to the Y-DNA testing on a male, to get both series done at the same time, by ordering the DNAPlus test. There are a number of options, depending on what kind of information you want. More information on these tests and their uses can be found on the FamilyTreeDNA website.

Katherine Dick Benbow

discounts available for DNA project

I am looking for participants to join the Viele surname DNA project. FamilyTreeDNA has issued two $30 gift certificates which can be applied towards Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37 tests (these are the only two tests eligible; the Y-DNA12 is not eligible), but the order must be placed and paid for by December 31st, 2005. At this point, I will not apply this to a test that is ordered by the invoice method; it must be ordered and paid for by credit/debit card.

A woman can ask a brother or other male relative to participate, provided that man descends from the Viele family with an unbroken male line (father's father's father....). If you are interested, please send me an e-mail with the details on your line of descent. You will find my e-mail address linked to my name above.

This is first come, first served. The first two Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37 orders placed and paid for as stipulated, by December 31st, can receive this gift certificate as a refund against their charge, by notifying me, so that I can tell FTDNA to use the gift certificate and issue the $30 refund. I do not have access to your payment information, other than the method. And I do not receive any commission or money from this project.

You will find the page to use to join the project at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=A21736&am...

Katherine Benbow
Viele surname DNA project administrator (FamilyTreeDNA)

Family legend has it that he came with two other brothers. We have his father as Jacob Vealey b. 12 Mar 1808 in Onondaga, NY and d. 30 Jan 1876 in Monroe, MI. Jacob married Polly Brenningstall in 1828. I have more info on those people but nothing farther back. Could these be related to yours?

If you'd like, email me at lavinland@copper.net as I don't check the boards very often.

Thanks!

Jacob is the 3rd great-grandson of Cornelis Volkertszer Viele who married Maria du Trieux. I am really in search of his wife Elizabeth Groesbeck. She was probably born mid 1780s. I have a feeling that she may have been his 2nd marriage and at least 10 years younger than he. Their daughter Sarah Jane was born somewhere between 1825 to 1827, when he was 51/53 years old. Anywho, if anyone has any info on the elusive Elizabeth it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Leslie

That's the guy. Thank you very much for the information. I didn't have all of Stephen's children and did not know that he was in the Revolution. I'm still looking for the parents of Jacob's wife, Elizabeth Groesbeck. Jacob Viele and Elizabeth lived in S. Butler, Wayne Co., NY, where he owned and operated a saw mill. Their daughter Sarah Jane married Orrin Gardner Farrington, who was from Bellingham, Norfolk Co., MA. He worked in a pulp mill in his later years so I have to assume that he went to S. Butler NY because of the saw mill business. They lived in MA and NH and produced my g grandmother Emma Jane Farrington.

At the moment I am having PC problems, so can not answer by private messages.

I am not sure where you have the question, but above Cornelius Viele/Veley of Bath, NY is a combinatation of Kathleen Viele's three works (post is on the Viele boards with exact titles) and I have checked out baptismal records, found some wills, ect.

Below Cornelius, but including him; we started with a list of names, who they married. It did leave out a second and third marriage for Peter Veley, Jr., the second having two children.
The list left off a comma so a Margaret (not sure of the second name) was actually two women. I have a copy of Cornelius's will which sets that straight.

Who is our last common ancestor?

Margaret Viele/Eldert Ament--Schenectady, NY

Margaret Viele, daughter of Jan Viele and Debora Glenn, born about April 29, 1753 in Schenectady, NY, married Eldert Ament about 1778 in Schenectady, was my 4X great grandmother. Eldert was the son of perhaps Lucas Ament and Hannah Lewis born about 1753 perhaps in Schenectady and died before March 1798 in Schenectady. Their oldest son was John Viele Ament, born May 22, 1783 in Schenectady. John Viele Ament married a woman named Eunice. Their oldest son Edward Glenn Ament was born September 18, 1806 in Dansville, Livingston Co., NY. Between 1806 and 1808 (when their second son was born) they moved to Hardin County, KY. I would appreciate any further information anyone might have on these people and I am most interested in the surname of Eunice and the date and place she and John Viele Ament were married. Thanks -- Mary [Ament] Osborne, Atlanta, GA

Sorry, once I was off line I went and dug out the notebook I keep that family in and found it was from Hudson and Mohawk Valley; and the surname is spelled Mynderse. It was available from Genealogy Library, but it probably would be best to wait until it gets to
http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/families/hmgfm/notdoneyet....

I believe the surnme you are looking for spells the name Mynderse or Myndertse and is a true Dutch Patronimic. That is some ancestor's first name was Myndert.

There is also Pierson's at http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/families/firstsettlers/mci...

"Two brothers, Myndert and Carsten Frederickse, smiths, were among the early settlers of Beverwyck. They came from Iveren. Among ...."

It gets dicy in Genealogies of the First Settler of Albany County (not on a free server) as two completey different families are combined under Myndert. The Van Iveren / Van Ivere / Van Yveren are not related to the VanderBogert which is where many of the Viele's got the Myndert from as a first name. I don't think they used it as a lasting surname. I know for a fact the the Van Every name is researched which I suspect it might be today with some of the family.

Re: Peter Viele b.1640/8

There is also mention of Cornelis Cornelise Viele having children: Arnout, Cornelis and Pieter, and a small amount of bio info on each of them in Jonathan Pearson, Genealogies of the Ancient County of Albany from 1630 to 1800, Reprinted for Clearfield Company Inc. by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, 1998, 2000.

I just found this thread, and will be looking into as many of the resources you and the others have mentioned, as I am just getting into this branch. I have also found reference to Cornelis Cornelise or Cornelis Volkertsen Viele as being part owner of the ship Fortuyn which was part of the United New Netherland Co. and one of the first vessels to bring settlers to New York State. Does anyone have the facts on this?

Thanks!

Alice Kaplan

Vieles in Michigan

I am a descendant of Charles Viele who came to Bellevue Michigan with his brother William Viele in about the 1860's or 70's. They were two of a large family belonging to Charles Hanson Viele and Margarita Sarah Putman (or Putnam) of Red Creek, NY. I'd like to connect with anyone researching the Vieles of Red Creek as I've been working on this branch for years....off and on. I've made a tenative link to the Viele branch listed in the History of a Dutch Family, but would love to verify the link.

Oren Viele and the Beans of Wisconsin

Yes, we know something. You will even find a letter by him in the following book we are publicizing on message boards:
Now available in book form: letters of Alanson Vaughan, Hepzibeth Vaughan, Thomas Goodrich Bean, Sarah Vaughan Bean and members of their family:
The Vaughan from whom Orest Ranum and Janice Ranum Heuer descend is David Vaughan, a native of Wales who came to America circa 1630 and settled in Scituate, Rhode Island. By the 1770s his descendants had moved to Lake Champlain, where two Vaughans married two Beans. One of these young couples was Alanson B. Vaughan and Hepzibeth Bean Vaughan, who left Saranac, N.Y., in the late 1840s and moved with their siblings (among them Thomas Goodrich Bean, Enoch Bean, and Sarah Vaughan Bean) to southern Wisconsin, settling in Arena and Union. Within a decade some of the family had moved northward to Stevens Point and Plover; and Alanson Vaughan and his family pushed on to Mower County, Minnesota, where they were active in founding the towns of Austin and Lansing. Several of Alanson Vaughan’s children headed west after the Civil War.
We have edited a 196-page collection of Bean-Vaughan correspondence, 1843-1903, entitled Remember me to all who may inquire. It will be available through our web site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PRanum, for $19.95, plus shipping and handling.
