Hi Maree,
I am descended from Johanna's sister Mary Villa. The pirate story is very interesting. I am curious if you have any documentation about where Lawrence is from? I only ask because Johanna and Mary's sister Cecilia listed her father's place of birth as "Spain" on US census records, and Cecilia's death certificate in the US gave her father's place of birth as Spain.

Hi Maree,

I have Margaret's death certificate, which shows she was too young to be Johanna's mother (She would have been a child when Johanna was born).

I also have Johanna's death certificate, which shows her mother's name was Ellen.

I (together with the help of a few of Lawrence's other descendants) also have many other Christening, marriage, death and census records for this family (including Lawrence's other daughter Bridget's marriage record), which I'm happy to share if you want to contact me directly, or provide an email address on here.

My husband is descended from Lawrence via Patrick, then Denis.

Hi Maree,

Margaret (Peggy) Coyle was Lawrence's second wife. His first wife was Ellen (Unknown surname). Johanna was Ellen's daughter, while Joseph, Thomas and Cecilia were Peggy's. Going by dates, Henry, Mary and Patrick were probably Ellen's, while Bridget (she is revealed as Lawrence's daughter by her marriage certificate) , is probably Peggy's.

Do you know where the story about Lawrence being born in Malta comes from? I have seen references to him being born in Malta, Portugal or Spain, but I can't find anything to verify where he came from before he appeared in Rathmullen?

I have lots of info about the descendants of each of Lawrence's children and am happy to share them.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi My family have also been researching the Villa family tree and ours Also states that Lawrence Villa came from Valleta in Malta and he married Margaret Coyle whose children were Henry Patrick Mary Johanna Joseph Thomas and Cecilia From what we know Johanna Villa married her first cousin Thomas Coyle in 1860 in Derry Johanna was born in Rathmullen Donegal so that would answer your question about where the other children were born. They had seven children . My husbands family is descended from one of their children Ellen who married Hugh Friel. Any information about the rest of the family would be fantastic Hope this helps

Can or do you know the names of his siblings? Did any of them ever lived in SA, TX?
According to my father, his real father was Felix Segovia, whose mother's name was Margarita Villa Segovia and relatives: Francisco "Pancho" Villa, and Joe Segovia.
I like to know how the mother was related to Panco Villa, and how the others fit in, thus letting me know where I fit in.

Hi, Denis Villa was also my great-grandfather. My mother's maiden name is Villa. I've always wanted to and go back to the origin of the name - I've heard both the Malta and Spanish family legends. My uncle told once that his grandfather Denis said that he believed the Villas came from Barcelona originally. (I'm not fully subscribed yet).

Hi Martha (known as Mardi) was the daughter of Denis Villa and Martha McElhinney. Denis was the son of Patrick Villa and Bridget Kenny. Patrick, as you quite rightly guessed, was the son of Lawrence.

My husband is also descended from Denis Villa and Martha McElhinney, through their son Denis.

Martha was born on 7th March 1913, at 9 Creggan Terrace, Derry, N Ireland.

Donato Villa- Popoli, Italy

I happen to be descended from Pietro Villa, son of Donato Villa and Fransesca Palumbo from Popoli, Italy. I'm wondering if anyone has any further info on Donato or his wife Fransesca? They happen to be my proverbial "brick wall." I was able to dowload Donato's obit from the NY Times and was also hoping someone could clarify some facts for me... It states he was served under Gen. Garibaldi in the battle when Rome fell. But according to everything I've read, Garibaldi never succeeded in capturing Rome. At the time Rome fell, Garibaldi was in France as a commander in the Franco-Prussian War fighting for the French surprisingly. Rome was captured by provincial Italian forces. Either Donato was with the proviancial forces that took Rome, or he was fighting in France under Garibaldi. Anyone have any info on this?
Cheers, Matt

Oh, I didn't know about Henry, thanks for that. I have seen on another forum that Lawrence settled in Donegal, before moving to Derry, so they were possibly born there.

Our family legend said that the earliest Villa came to Ireland with the Spanish Aramada, but I think that was just fanciful! Obviously the Spain bit matches though. I have seen other references to Lawrence having been born in Valletta, Malta, but I haven't seen any proper records either way.

It would be interesting to share info with you, but I don't have a proper subscription on here at the moment.

Some places I have seen it spelled Lawrence, others Laurence. I have the children of Laurence/Lawrence Villa and Margaret Coyle as: Henry (1849), Mary (1852), Patrick (1853), Joseph (1860), Thomas (1863) and Cecilia (1864).

I think the older children may have been born somewhere in Ireland other than Derry.

I don't have any proof Lawrence was from Spain other than his daughter's census record, although that was always family legend told to me before I started researching this stuff.

I'm pretty sure we have a connection here. My husband is descended from Patrick Villa, son of Lawrence. I have Patrick's siblings as Joseph (1860 Derry), Thomas (1863 Derry) and Cecilia (1864 Derry). I don't have a birth record for Patrick, but his marriage gives Lawrence as his father.

However, I was under the impression that Lawrence was from Malta, not Spain, although I may be wrong.
