Does anyone have any information on this lady? The only information I have is from the 1871 English Census where she is described as the aunt of two Webb sisters in Kingsclere, Hampshire, England.
She was the Publican at The Harrow Inn, Kingsclere, St Paul Woodlands, Hampshire.
The Vince name doesn't fit either side of the Webb family.

Email me at ennaid46@gmail.com with your email address and I will send it along.

I don't have any connection to the Vinces. I grew up in Hadleigh and my Dad still lives there. I scanned all of his old photos a couple of years ago and this is one of them.
I have Vince members from there and all over Suffolk (such as Elmsett, Kersey, Hadleigh, Semer) going back to the 1600s. Not on Ancestry yet. I would love to see the picture and see if we have any connections.
I am interested in the William Vince you mentioned.
I have just started picking where my uncle left off.
I know that my Great Grandfather George Vince had a father named William. William was born in Nr. Bethnal Green on Feb 9, 1838. We believe he married a Harriett Rice. They had a son George and I understand that there were about 5 kids in all and then William died at an early age and Harriett then became a Moody. I know George was born in King's Somborne June 17, 1980 and married a Caroline Emmence. The ages of the kids for William and Harriett fit in the 1871 and 1881 Census. Are we talking about the same people? Would love to hear about any info you have. I see your posting was in 2006.

My John Vince was christened in Kingsclere, Hampshire, in 1808. His parents were George Vince and Hannah Smith. Good try, though, as we have 2 John's, born early 1800's, in Hampshire. Thanks for your reply, and good luck in your research.
Patricia
I have set up a website to share letters between Ida Spurlock Vince, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Annie Alward Stokesberry, of LaJunta, Colorado. Annie & Ida were first cousins, and the letters include genealogical information as well as glimpses into the lives of two women who lived on what was still "the frontier" in the 1920s. There are also links to photos of Ida & Annie and their gravesites. I hope these will prove to be of some interest to researchers of their families.

Hope to hear from you again. Regards Lois

Hi again Marie: Are you sure you don't have more McKinnon genes than any others? It's exactly the same problem here. My father was the worst, he used to say leave it alone girl, you don't want to know. Unfortunately, everyone of the older ones are gone, so everything i have is a result of ferreting it out myself. The McKinnon family for the most part, are intensly private and very much loners. I think this is an old Scottish trait, as it seems its been that way for most of my family down through the generations. I have to confess, I'm somewhat that way myself, and have to push myself outside the box, as they say nowdays. I'm probably older than you, 62 and counting, and I have found myself regretting not starting earlier, but I came along late in my parents life, and didn't really get to know the relatives very well. The local library was a great place to start, and I spent hours going through the local census records and low and behold hit the jackpot. The McKinnon's came out to Brant County in the early 1850's, although I don't know if they stopped anywhere else first. The ladies at the LDS library also gave me some pointers on how to search, they were a great help. I have ancestry.com until September, and made use of a free trial for ancestry.ca for a few days, it was very helpful also. Perhaps if your family members understood how interesting and important family history is, they would be more forthcoming. I've only been really working on this for the last 8 months, after putting it away 15 years ago. I couldn't get much information then and I was really busy with my teenagers, so I packed it away and forgot about it. Turns out that wasn't a bad thing, as I didn't get a computer until 6 months ago and that made the big difference. I saw in a census report after Christina died, that Faith went to Washington State to school, whatever happened to her after that, do you know? If you want to put some pressure on your family for info feel free to use me as an excuse. Regards for now. Lois

Hi: Wonderful news, I was hoping against hope that I was on the right track. I've been researching all of the brothers and sisters, in an effort to confirm where in Scotland they came from. I have confirmed that Donald and Catharine came originally from Inverness, however I can't seem to confirm if it was mainland Inverness or one of the islands. I have a feeling it might be Skye or possibly Barra, but not confirmed. I do know that they were poorer than the proverbial church mouse, and they were farm labourers living in a shanty in Brant County. Christines' oldest sister Nancy, died in the Barton St. Asylum in Hamilton, Ontario. The next sister Mary, married Robert Wilson from England, they were in Brant County until 1881, and then moved to Buffalo, N.Y. They had 7 children in total. The oldest brother, Johnathan, I can't locate. They were all born in Scotland. The youngest children born in Brant County, were John, Neil, Christina and another John. My G-Grandad was Neil, who married and lived his whole life in Brant County, one of the other John's moved to Galt, Ontario and remained single. He is buried with Neil and his wife in Brantford. I can't find the last John either. Do you, or anyone in your family ever remember whether Christina mentioned her family in Ontario, or perhaps if there was ever anything written down about any of them? Donald died October 26, 1885, in Brant County. According to his death certificate he died indigent, so I'm not sure where he is buried. I still haven't found what happened to his wife Catharine after his death. I thought perhaps she moved with one of the children, but haven't found her yet. Some of the information I found about them is as follows: They were illiterate, Gaelic speakers, extremely poor and Roman Catholic highlanders. Their children were all raised Roman Catholic, but some of them changed to Methodist, Baptist when they married. Catharines' maiden name was McNeil according the the death certificates of 2 of the children. I think only 2 of Christines' daughters were born in Brant County, Florence Rebecca was born July 30, 1883 in St. Thomas, Elgin County, Ontario according to her birth certificate [005992], and she died when a toddler before they moved to Wisconsin. She is buried in St. Thomas, where her father worked for the railroad for a time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone in your family might have some record or memory, no matter how insignificant, thanks for responding. Regards: Wheaton6

You are correct in her maiden name. Her parents were Donald and Catherine McKinnon. She was born 9 Jun 1859 in Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada. Both of her parents were from Scotland. She married John Albert Vince on 1 Jan 1880 in Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada. She gave birth to 8 children and only 6 lived to adulthood. The children were: Bertha Escelia, Florence Rebecca, Edna Bell, Olive E., Margaret Loretta (or Luella), Clarence J., Faith E., and Baby. The first 3 children were born in Brant Co., Ontario, Canada, the remainer were born in Wisconsin. Florence died before 1900, and the baby prior to 1910, possibly even earlier than that. If you would like more info on this family I can help you, I cannot on her parents though, as they are not my line and I have done no research on them.
I hope this helps a little.

Christina went to live with her daughter Edna Gardner along with her last child Faith. Christina died in 1928 in Potlatch, and her husband died in 1913 in Lewiston. I believe Christinas' maiden name was McKinnon and she was born about 1860. When her husband died she went to live with her daughter Edna Gardner in Potlatch, Idaho. They had previously lived in Brant County, Douglas Wisconsin and Lewiston Idaho. If I am correct about her maiden name, she was probably my Great-grandfathers' youngest sister.
Hi Alan
I have just seen your 10 month old message to Peter Vince! I too am descended from Thomas Vince. My great-grandfather was his son Arthur Thomas Vince born 16 August 1864 in Aldham Suffolk. Arthur Thomas' mother was Thomas' first wife Mary Vince nee Gosling.

Arthur Thomas became a master caterer and restaurant owner in London He was married to Anne Church. My grandfather Arthur Edward Vince was the youngest and only son of 7 children. He was born in 1907 and is still alive aged 98 and living happily in Torquay. I believe that Arthur Thomas' younger brother William Vince born 1885/86 worked for him in the restaurant business in the early 1900s.

I was interested to get your information regarding Thomas Vince's parents. I wonder whether you have managed to find out any more information.

I hope you find this information of interest.

Best regards
Susan Jackson

I am trying to find information on Charles Henry Vince, born in Montreal 6 June 1911 to Charles Henry Vince (born 27 Aug 1883) and Sophia Maud Simpkins (born 3 June 1887), both born in the U.K. I believe the family was just travelling to Canada when Charles was born. The father (CHV,Sr) was a chef. I am unable to trace the family line back any further. I know that the father (CHV,Sr) had a 2 brothers (John Vince, Alfred Vince) and 3 sisters (Eleanor, Prudence, Emily). Alfred Vince had a granddaughter named Margaret (Guscott?) who was living in Michigan, daughter of his son Hugh. Hugh's brother was also called Alfred Vince, and had at least one child, possibly called Sidney Vince. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Vince's who emigrated to Canada

This message is more of an update. Isaac Mann Vince was the father of two children, Harold Isaac and Mabel Elizabeth. Their mother was Elizabeth Dewson Massingham who died at a fairly young age at Bournmouth in 1896. Isaac was remarried that same year to a widow who was born in Cork, Ireland. The combined family emigrated to Vancouver, Canada. Mabel married an immigrant from Scotland in 1910 and Isaac served as a Sapper with the CEF in WW I at the age of 59, he enlisted in 1916 and claimed he was 44 years old. His second wife died in 1936 and Isaac Died in 1940. I'm still searching for information about Elizabeth Dewson Vince who gave birth to Mabel at Norwich in 1891. Jay

Descendants of John Vince - Canada, U.S.A.

I am looking for descendants of John Vince, born Hampshire, England 1808; married Rebecca Miller Brant County, Ontario, Canada 1848; died 1891. Children of John and Rebecca were Robert, William, Margaret, David, John, Joseph, Charles, Catharine Elizabeth, Edward, Henry, Lydia and Arthur, all born between 1849 and 1869. Several sons emigrated to the United States. John was married previously in England, and children from that family, all born in England between 1828 and 1835, included James, George, Marianna, Jane and Joseph. Are you one of John's descendants?
