Hi Laurel,
We may have some kind of a crazy link here. Looking back on some old research, I have an Edward Charles Vine who was the elder brother of my g-g-grandfather. Edward's wife died in 1888. Edward remarried two years later to the daughter of a pub landlord. He was 68 and she was a lot younger. I know they had son - Edwin, born 1890. Edward Charles Vine died in a Manchester workhouse in 1901 but I could never trace his widow. On a 1901 Chorlton Union Workhouse (Manchester) I found an 11 y-o Edward Vine and a 4 y-o Herbert Vine. It would be wrong to surmise too much, but was Edwin written as Edward - and was Herbert his young brother? And are they the ones you're looking for?
Regards
Art Vine

My Grandfathers name was Herbert Vine and he came from England as a boy.I believe he came from an orphanage. I know he had one brother I believe his name was Ed.His children were Elanor, Wilfred, Ralph and Charles. Charles is the only remaining one in that family except for their descendants. would be interesting to see if there was a relation as a lot of the same names are repeated.

Laurel Vine

I came across the Vine message board whilst doing research on my own family and saw your message. I can tell you that the Thomas Vine who appears on the 1850 Black Rock Census is from Brightling, Sussex. His parents are Richard and Elizabeth Vine and he was born on 11 Nov 1810. His brother, Jesse, appears above him on the Black Rock census and married a relative of mine (I believe - still working on sorting out connection) Caroline Pennells. Jesse and Caroline followed various members of her family (Pennells - also on census and also Brickmakers) to Michigan (the Kalamazoo area). I haven't seen this book that is mentioned but if the author is correct in his comments that there were four brothers who came over from Sussex, England, then Jesse is the missing brother. The Author may not have been able to trace him because at some point Jesse Americanizes his name and becomes George.

They are my g.g.grandparents...through their daughter - Ivy Maud Dando.

I'm happy to share any information Ive got with you - as the Vine link is by marriage, Ive only gone back to Michael Vine who died in Devon in June of 1841. It would be great to share information with you!
Hi Zena77

This is from a long time ago but I'm hoping you can help me, though I can't really help on the Dando-side I'm afraid...

William and Eliza Vine are my Great-great-grandparents, their daughter Una Mary Vine (Annie's sister) married Edward Hazelton and had 2 children together, Una Molly and Robert Henry Peter Hazelton in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. Robert (known as Peter) is my Grandfather and now resides near Bath, now the grand-old age of 88!

I have just been searching the census today and it says in 1901 that Lancelot's mother was Una, which confused me quite a lot as my Grandfather never mentioned a brother but I now realise as the surname was Dando he must've been Annie's (Ada's) son, and Grandad's cousin. I didn't realise her husband and other children were alive and well at that time in Hereford so that has helped me piece it together, thank you!

I believe William's middle name was Henry, and this has been passed down the generations of the Vine family.

I understand from my Grandfather that Annie and Una's brother George was quite a character and he has told me many stories about him! George was the vicar of St Aidan's Church at Basford in Nottingham from 1921-1960, and used to cycle all the way to Weston-super-Mare to visit them! Una is buried in Weston-super-Mare in the same grave as her husband and father William.

Hope that wasn't too much in one email either! You may have already known all this since this post was 3 years ago! Do let me know if you have any more information on the family.

Kind regards

Kirstie (Hazelton)

that manuscript actually goes back to the 1700's, I think Mr. Wall finished it in 1953. It refers to Robert Vine, in Connecticut in 1720, some of it was supposition, & then picks up in NY. Some of the NY Schenectady side went on to Ohio & Wisconsin. I had a copy of it, but at present think I've mis-placed it. I'm from Schenectady NY, & Ohio branch.

My name is Anita Craig, one of three daughters born to Susan Joan Craig (surname Vine). Susan Vine was born to Violet Vine of the UK and James Hopson of Jamaica or Trinidad on 6/20/1926. Her parents never married and her father attempted to raise her as a single parent. In memory of her confirmation on Nov 19th, 1939 at St. Paulo Addlentorre (not sure if this is spelled correctly) her name was Susie Sophia Joan Vine. Susan Vine resided in Margate until marrying my father and coming to the US in 1953. She and my father married 7/14/1952. She was also a ball girl at Wimbledon. Please help me locate any information on Violet Vine or James Hopson. Thank you

Hi, I am descended from the Vine family and have Thomas c1844 in my tree.
You mention his daughter Mary being born 1890 in Ross Workhouse - I have her born 1892 in Worcester. She doesn't appear with the family in 1891 census.
Have you found a marriage for Thomas as yet?
Regards
Lesley

There is a brother of the two I know of. Samuel is a younger brother of John and George Vine. I have a record of him in the 1901 England census. He is married to Catherine, they have two daughters, Agnes and Charlotte.
There may have been other children later. If this is your family then you and my husband are distant cousins. If you have any info to link the families other than what I have let me know.

Much more info now. Esther Vine was a daughter of William Vine - about and from whom we have quite a lot of surviving records (see www.williamvine.net). He was born 1782 in Willingdon or Heathfield, parents William Vine / Mary Fitsell - but haven't been able to trace back any further. Interesting that he operated the windmill on Windover Hill, Wilmington, in the 1810s (he wrote a meteorological diary in 1811-12, a copy of which survives). His first two or three children (all daughters: Sarah, Mary, Lydia) were born while he was there. Details in rootsweb tree - database 'silicondale'

Hi

I am hoping someone might be able to help me.

I am looking for the marriage of my Great Grandparents. On the 1911 Census they said they had been married for 11 whole years, which would of made their marriage to have been around 1900.

I have looked high and low and years either side and still found nothing. As far as I know, they have always used the same names.

Is there anyone who might be able to help me look, as they might find something I haven't...

Their names are...

Lilian Godden and Henry Thomas Vine.

I have not yet found there birth records, but on the 1911 cencus they put down there ages. He was 39 and she was 37, which would make him around 1872 and her 1874 and both born in London...not sure what part as that's only what they put.

I hope someone can help me

Thanks in advance.
Jackie

Hi Carol

I have also found that single Henry Vine in Acton and strongly think that could be him as that is where he lived when he was older...all of my family come from around that area, even I lived there myself when I was very young.

It could be a possibility that they never got married either, I was also thinking that. But on each of their childrens birth certificates, Lilian put down as her name being Vine and formely Godden...so I can only assume from that, that they were married, but also they could of just lied and said that anyway.

I noticed they were quite late in age when they started to have children, so I'm thinking one of them might of been married before and they didn't want to marry again and just said they were because they had kids.

As far as I know, Henry wasn't in t WW1, but I have not looked for that yet, I only knew there son died in Tunisia in the WW2...found all the info on that already.

Not sure about Irish links, was thinking about that only this morning actually. ALl I know is we found them on the 1911 census in Wales, so maybe there is a connection there, though they did go back to Brighton to have there last child.

There are so many possibilities, so I am thankful for any help at all.

I shall look into what you have said.
Thankyou again.

Jackie

Have you found them both in 1901 yet- what job did Henry do.
I have found a 29 year old Henry Vine as a boarder in Acton Middx in 1901.He works in a laundry. He says he's single.

It could be that they never actually did marry of course.
My great grandparents finally tied the knot in 1914- 21 years after their first child(of ten) was born.

My gran always said they couldn't afford it before and they never had the time!

Have you traced both of them backwards at all to find out if there were Irish links....or did Henry serve in WW1,army ppapers are often useful to find out marriage or kids details.

Carol
