Hi Robert,
I have contacted my father who is looking up to see if your particular Thomas Viney is in the book. It has details of all Vineys from Kent and Somerset. So fingers crossed for you. I do know that the Devon Record Office has will details for Thomas Viney d. 1818. Inland Revenue of Wills IRW-V152 and you can request a copy of it. It might shed some light. But you probably have already found all that out. As soon as I hear back from my father I will contact you promptly.
Cheers
Laura

Hi Laura,

I would be interested as I have been trying to trace the birth place and date of a Thomas Viney who died in Stoke Dameral in Devon in 1818 and the most likely place of birth appears to be Kent.

Robert Viney

Hi

sorry I only managed to replicate what you had, I guess the cert really is the next best thing. I suspect you will find that Love Lane was a poor area where families could rent cheaply - that's what I found for one of my lines - they kept moving around a small group of houses.

Yes I'm in London, but you can write to Salisbury register Office from outside the UK. See this page
http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/artsheritageandlibraries/familyh...
to find out how to get a cert from them.

I suspect the Vineys in Wilts do eventually link up - but difficult to be sure. My 3xgreat grandfather was William Viney born in Stockton in about 1779. I can't get back further at to mo, as there are a LOT of William Vineys in that area around that time! His offspring moved first to Litton Cheney in Dorset and then eventually to Gosport in Hampshire and most of them were in the Marines for a while before returning to their home areas.
regards,.
thankyou deb, for that information. Love lane was the street where alot of my ancesters lived. Leslie george is my grandfather, but he passed away in the 70s. All the information you have found is exactly what i have, i think your right, the next course of action would be a certificate. Do you live in england? and how do you think you are linked to the wiltshire VINEYS? You do know that there are more than 1 family of Viney in wiltshire.

hi

further to my earlier reply, I've still had no luck with finding Lavinia's parents, but I did find the following:

1901 census: William & Lavinia + Ethel (10 months) were living in St. Martin, Salisbury, Wiltshire. This census incorrectly gives Lavinia's birthplace as Winterbourne, Wiltshire.

1911 census: William & Lavinia (correct birthplace of Middlesex this time) were living at 112 Love Lane, New Sarum, Salisbury with children Ethel Lucy Pretoria Viney age 10; Vera Viney aged 6 (born 122 Love Lane); Marjorie
age 4 (also born 122 Love Lane); and Leslie George (5 months, born 112 Love Lane).

Earlier at the 1891 census Lavinia was living in Winterbourne Dauntsey, Wiltshire with her maternal grandparents (Edmund & Sarah Percy) and their 2 sons.

Earlier still in 1881 she was again with those grandparents in Winterbourne Gunner (and 3 of their sons).
regards, Deb

Hello

Given my Vineys come from Wiltshire it is possible this William Viney will turn out to link to my family tree.

I had a look at the ancestry record for Lavinia's marriage to William Viney and it appears that her maiden name was Percy (usually if you click the "look at others on the same page" option the bride or groom is listed). It also confirms the grandparents she was staying with in the census you mentioned were probably her paternal grandparents.

To find her parents you could try the 1891 census, she might have moved back to living with the parents by then. The other possibility is to request a copy of the 1900 marriage cert. You can do this through ancestry, but it is cheaper to contact Salisbury records office and see if they can find it. The marriage cert should give at least her father's name , occupation and whether he was living at the time of the marriage.
regards, Deb

Several Viney's served in S/A during the Boer War my own
grand father being just one,he,James Viney was wounded and
captured on Valentines Day 1900 at Rensberg. However just 30 days later he was back with his regiment (the Wiltshires)
we don't know if he escaped or it was a prisoner exchange.

Perhaps a Viney was discharged from the army in S/A and
started a family.
Caroline certainly did not go to America: she died in London of TB in 1851. However the Viney connection to South Africa is interesting; there are not many places in Africa that would be plausible locations for Caroline's birth, and South Africa is certainly one. I have checked online military and East India company records for evidence of her birth but without success. Do you have any leads to the history of that family?

Caroline Viney - Africa and London

I am trying to trace the ancestors of Caroline Viney. She was born about 1808, and married John Denham in London in 1831. She gave her birthplace in 1851 as "Africa - British subject". One signature on her marriage certificate is "W Viney" which may be her father. Her mother Elizabeth was born in Southwark. I want to identify Caroline's father, and if possible where in Africa she was born.

Re: Andrew Viney Viney Family

John Viney McHenry m Keziah Brown 10 Feb 1825 in Shelby Co. AL
Check the 1830 census for that household.

There is a huge tree online at ancestry.com for this marriage, but it doesn't have his wife or this marriage. I just added a comment to it.

According to this tree (and it seems to be correct with specific dates):
John Viney McHenry was born 3 Mar 1802 in Christianburg, Montgomery Co. VA. He was prob. on the 1830 and 1840 Shelby Co. AL census. He was on the 1850 Shelby Co. AL census and the 1870 Lapile, Union Co. AR census. He died 15 Jan 1880 in that place just mentioned.

He was the son of Thomas Dodson McHenry who was born Christianburg, Washington Co., VA 1772 and died 12 July 1823, Bessemer-Jonesboroguh, Jefferson Co. AL. His wife was Nancy Martin 1782-1844.

Thomas Dodson McHenry was the son of of John McHenry who was born 1740 Orange Co. VA and died 17 Apr 1805 in Washington Co. VA. His wife was Susannah Viney 1749-1785.

They had a son Barnabas so I am guessing that John McHenry was most likely the son of Barnabas/Barnaby/Barnett McHenry whom I have often seen mentioned there in VA.

Susannah Viney 1749-1785 was the daughter of Andrew Viney and Susannah. Andrew Vinney was born 1712 Verny, Lorraine, Alsace France and died 14 May 1782 Hampshire Co. VA.

ZANESVILLE - Mary "Fruite" Yvonne Bailous, 68, peacefully went to be with the Lord and some of her beloved family on Wednedsday, March 25, 2009 at 5:20 a.m. following a long battle with cancer.
Hi Laura

do you know which Viney family your father's family came from in England? Most of us seem to be from the Dorset / Hampshire area though some of my lot came from Wiltshire, too.
regards, Deb Viney

Dear Ian,
We have traced our Viney family line back to Devon around 1770 and I am contacting you to find out whether you would be prepared to share your Viney family tree to help us to get back further. At the moment we are stuck at the marriage of Thomas Viney in 1773 at St Sidwell, Exeter and have not been able to find where Thomas was baptised. We think it likely that he came from the Viney families around Honiton and Tiverton.
Robert Viney

Hello

I am working on a family tree linking together all of the Vineys who were born in Stockton in Wiltshire (including my gr-grandfather). As I expand it, this tree is beginning to incorporate other Vineys from Wiltshire towns and villages.

Mike: the information you have given on the boards so far does not yet tie into this tree, but it may do if you have further information.

If any one would like to see a copy of the Wiltshire Vineys tree, please contact me directly (I have not yet posted it on line).
regards, Deb Viney

Hello

Does anyone have William Henry Viney in their tree?
The one I am seeking was born in Portsea Island (now within Portsmouth) Hampshire in the UK in the last quarter of 1868.

His parents were William Viney (probably born 1843, Frome, Somerset, UK) and Emily J. Bramble (born 1851, Kingston (Portsmouth) Hampshire).

I am interested in both their ancestors and their descendents.

Hello

that's interesting, so far I have William Viney born 1779-1787 (dates vary in different sources) who first married Mary Rebbeck (or maybe Bebbeck) apparently without any children then later married Sarah Cummin(g)s and produced at least three children: Anne b.1813, William b.1816 and George b1818.

I am descended from George. I think you are suggesting Paul is another sibling of those three? I would be interested in adding Paul's descendents to my tree, if you are willing! Please contact me at debviney1@yahoo.co.uk
regards, Deb Viney
